Is the Snuff Drip OK?

Hi all just wanted to ask i know it doesn’t always taste great but is it ok to swallow the drip or should i spit it out? as regards the drip & my health? Swifty

i personally do. But most of the snuffs i use that do induce the back drip don’t taste all that bad. Sometimes you can alter the "sniff’ to minimize that…As far as the health ramifications…? not really sure

I mostly spit it out when and if circumstances allow. Too much back juice in your stomach can’t be great for you generally.

Interesting read:http://www.smokersonly.org/product\_facts/antioxidant.html If it taste bad spit it out. Drip from nasal snuff is minimal compared to gutting chew juice. If you have an existing condition like GERT or suffer from acid reflux,It may cause difficulties. I am no doctor.

The acid reflux is a good point actually. I was diagnosed, and prescribed a daily antacid after starting to use snuff. Since I’ve started the antacid the problem has largely gone away. And I don’t consciously swallow drip.

Thanks alot for your replys  most appreciated

I would think the miniscule amount would be benign unless you have as basement_shamen a condition that could be aggravated by it.

I’m not a doctor by any stretch of the imagination, but I guess I don’t stop to worry about it too much, basically on the principle that if it was going to any real harm, it would happen in an unprotected nose long before a well-protected stomach. But that’s talking about actual long-term harm. I’ve never noticed a stomach ache from it, but others might be more sensitive to that sort of thing (and I can certainly see it is a complication to GERD/Acid Reflux).

I was interested to find this thread and a few others on the same subject, so thought I’d bump it with my recent experience.

I’ve never had acid reflux in my life (other than a couple of times over-indulging).  I’ve been doing snuff a few times a week for maybe a year or less and never had any problem - until that progressed to more like 3-4 times a day over a period of a few weeks.  Suddenly I started getting this horrible bitter flavour in my throat which wouldn’t go away and gradually realized it was acid reflux.  Other symptoms followed over the course of a week, and it’s only now getting back to normal.

My diet is good, I’m a vegetarian, and not overweight.  I do eat spicy food, drink coffee, and drink moderately, and a whisky and dark chocolate at night is common.  I also smoke 2-3 pipes a week, and have an occasional cigar.  But I hadn’t made any changes to my diet or lifestyle except for an increase in snuff use.  I’m pretty sure snuff caused - or at least seriously contributed to this acid reflux.  In addition to not being good for the stomach, I read that nicotine softens the esophegal sphincter, as does coffee - so I’m wondering if snuff is doubly bad for acid reflux.  Worse than pipes or cigars.

Any suggestions on minimizing back-drip?  I live in a very dry, arid environment and if I don’t blow out very soon after snuffing, it’s pretty much just lodged up there.  That might be part of the problem?  I’d like to keep using snuff because I enjoy it, but if this is going to keep happening I’ll give up.  I haven’t had any in a week.

What really helps for me is doing boxcars and/or plugging, so there’s less snuff going to my throat, IMO.

Also, try different snuffs. There’s probably something around that you’ll enjoy and that won’t trigger your stomach/esophagus.

@cpp - what’s boxcars?  Presumably plugging is lodging into the nostrils, like with schmalzlers?

I have a suspicion that it was some GH snuffs that triggered, but that might just be psychological since they were the last ones I did before the bitterness started.

the drip is how the nose cleans way worse stuff then snuff. Your stomach acids will kill the snuff no harm in swallowing drip

@Chico Have a shot of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar in water every morning for 3 weeks to cure acid re-flux . Worked for me it may work for you.

Thanks, @basement_shaman - I’ve been taking organic apple cider vinegar for about a week… then realized the kind I have is pasteurized, not raw!  All that disgustingness for nuthin.’  I’m picking up some of the good stuff today.

@Chico - “my diet is good, I’m a vegetarian” well, which one is it?  Just kidding, just kidding.

Boxcar is a method of taking snuff - a search online will explain it much better than I can here.  As has been said, taking different snuffs might also help. I do notice drip at times, generally when using certain snuffs - nothing scientific, but there is something there.

@Effy - hardee har har.    :)>-

I did look up boxcar but don’t see how it could make a different.  Seems to be more a way of holding the snuff rather than preventing it from going to deep.  Unless I’m missing something,  I tried plugging yesterday with Santo Domingo.  It was okay, but find that a lot of the flavor is lost and that the nic-hit isn’t as pronounced.  I’m not a big nic junkie but a bit more effect would be nice.  Moderation is probably as important for me as technique.

Generally speaking moist snuffs generate a forward drip, I am not a big fan of back drip even thought it can occasionally happen. I usually take repeated moderate pinches of snuff all in one go, this usually ensures a rapid forward drip within 3-5 minutes. I think Wos snuff are the best in regards to drip, hardly ever got a back drip.If you live in a dry area that might be the problem, nostrils tend to be dryer when there is no moisture around.
