Congratulations Dave! You deserve a lot of credit for seeing this through. Brad Majors made some excellent points. I’m in the same camp as Jari T and cstokes4… no more SG tap boxes for me.
I’m with Jari T, it’s great to have a chance to order some US and Indian stuff ‘locally’. I’ll be placing an order as soon as you get a few scotches I’ve been dying to try out in stock.
Thanks for all the input re the tins vs the tap boxes. Good to know indeed since my initial order was primarily for the tap boxes. I will cancel that and order the 25g instead. It is a huge outlay because of the large selection of flavors, that’s my only issue. Cash flow is king and there ain’t much of that right now with the moving expenses. But, hey if you guys step up to the plate and order the SG tins reasonably fast that will keep the bank happy. Either that or each of you tell me your top 10 and I’ll pick out say 30 from everybody’s lists. Then over time I will gradually stock them all. @London Jack: our payment processor only works in USD at the moment, per my comment above: “In order to make things simpler we have set up separate websites for the USA, UK and EU. The rest of the world is handled by the US site. This impacts the currency you pay in, the taxes, and the shipping costs. Please select the appropriate website for where you live, or plan to ship the snuff to. For the time being your credit card is billed in USD and then converted by your credit card company to GBP or EUR at their prevailing rate. The result is that posted prices may be a few pennies more or less than what actually shows up on your bill. We are working on a multi-currency processor which will eliminate this discrepancy.” I know that this is not particularly satisfactory which is why we are working hard at getting a payment processor to work in all three currencies (USD, GBP, EUR). They are slow as treacle though. We have had our application submitted for 4 weeks already. Our ‘rep’ went on holiday for 2 weeks so it has stalled. She returns today so I will be right on it again tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience caused with this. Thanks Dave
At the least, getting the course ground SGs in tins would be prudent. These suffer the most in tap boxes, more so than the SPs and toasts. So all four Kendal Browns (orignal, scented, plain, special), London Brown, Scotch Black, Black Rapee, Princes Dark. Thats off the top of my head, I’m sure there are others.
Here, here with what Xander said. I’ll buy those from you.
Number 1 High Mill and Irish D Original are worth adding to your line up. I have sufficient amounts for the present but would reorder from you if available,. Good idea to go with the top ten rather than the entire range initially, if that helps your cash flow. I would also buy the KB’s when MY cashflow gets a little better!
I’m curious about the apple and the honey, but don’t get them if I’m the only one who is showing interest in those.
London Brown suffers badly. Had to cut the container open to get it out. Tried to re hydrate. Definately had a “London” smell, like having my nose rammed up the exhaust of a black cab (horrible smokey diesel engines). Ended up in the bin (trash can).
I, too, would be interested buying mostly their rappees and KBs. And Irishs. A few years ago I ordered few 10gr tins and all the moist varieties (London Brown, Black Rappee…) tins were rusted shut and unsnuffable. Has anyone had any moist SG snuff in a 25gr metal tin recently? Was it ok? If some kind of resealable plastic container (not a tap box!) would be feasible, I’d be content. I’m asking because SG seems to have constant problems (among others) with packing of their products. Pipe tobacco and snuff alike.
I don’t know what the problem with SG tap boxes is. Bernards use exactly the same boxes and I’ve never heard a complaint about Bernards. Can it be because Bernards are oil based while SGs are water based?
_I don’t know what the problem with SG tap boxes is. Bernards use exactly the same boxes and I’ve never heard a complaint about Bernards. I guess SG boxes could fair better in a humid climate, but still, some of the more volatile aromas would be lost.
Sam Gawith Kendal Brown Menthol aka Menthol Brown/black is moist and fresh in 25g vacuum-sealed tins and no rust whatever. I think the tins are kind of aluminium alloy, they bend quite easily though but not at the rim and lid but the base.
Except for Feinster Kownoer all Bernard tobaccos are oil based. However, some also contain an amount of water in addition to the oil.
@ Snufffranzl: I suspected that about the Kownoer, which is probably why mine dried up. You sound like you speak with some authority, and also your name and avatar leave me wondering if you work for or represent the Bernard company? Kownoer used to be sold in glass bottles. They would seem to keep the moisture in and the snuff fresher.
Xander, unfortunately I don’t work for Bernard. Feinster Kownoer is just one of my favourite tobaccos. I got these information from the German file on tobacco additives, Tabakzusatzstoff-Datenbank. Originally it was established to inform about additives in cigarettes but due to the thoroughness of German bureaucracy all tobacco products manufactured in or imported (in signifant quantities) to Germany are listed.
Thank you for that info, Snufffranzl. Its very curious, since Pöschl must submit to this in Germany, as I see them listed. If rumors are to be believed, they are pulling out of the US market for now having to submit to the same thing here.
@mrsnuff: Today I placed an order at your website. The credit card problem is now solved, as I have been charged correctly against my bank account. I am now waiting excitedly for the order to arrive
@ AllanH: Cheers, that was my main worry and plight. The important thing to me that the container is non-corrosive and well sealed!
@Jari T: The SG tins are very similar to the large J&H Wilsons tins. They have a rubber gasket in the lid so even when the vacuum seal is broken the contents remain fresh for quite a while.
@mr.snuff: As Xander says, the coarse moist SG snuffs suffer most from being in tap boxes. Apart from the ones he’s listed there’s also Peppermint Dark. I’d say a “must stock” would be Irish D Original. It’s strangely difficult to get hold of and I think you’d be the only retailer in the U.K. to offer it.
