favorite style of snuff?

Easier to say what I don’t like, so far… but maybe KB’s, SP’s, Toque fruit with menthols, a bit of WoS SM’s and Hedges.

Medium grind, fluffy, moist, strong. Not sure what style this is, maybe “User Friendly”?

I tend to shy away from the floral and fruity varieties, but anything else is pretty much open game to me. I tend to favor plain snuffs when I’m at home with the leading players being De Kralingse AO 1860, Viking Dark and Navy Plain. At work I like mentholated/medicated/flavored, mostly McChrytal’s Clove or O&G, De Kralingse AP, and Poschl’s Lowenprise, Andech’s Spezial or Presidents. Toque products are starting to work their way into my snuff routine with SP Extra and Camphor & Clove. The jury is still out on the Berwick Brown. I’m revisiting schmalzlers, since I haven’t had them in years. Bernard’s Wiehnachtpris is quite good. I plan on revisiting the toasts, since it’s been thirty years since I last tried one. I haven’t gotten around to that yet, but I’ll probably include some on the next order.

While i do like to try new snuffs every now and then, it seems i always fall back to snuffs that are scented with coffee. The snuff that got me hooked on it was Cafe Noir.

HI Guys, I know I might be a little off, but I am a newbie to the snuffin’business at it for some months now. initiali I really liked the WoS with different herbs, flavours, then I read that SP 1 should be good, bought it and was sold emediateley. Now the last bump is that I heard the word toast  got me one of those and I think I have almost all the toasts that is out there. My question is basically, what is the history and the difference between all these snuffs. I am very curious and would like to bring my knowledge up to the same speed that I am taking the snuff in. Also is it normal that you change in flavour? I’d love some suggestions, cause I saw there is quite some knowledge here. thanks, Happy Sniffing! Joseph

@JSnuffSnuff the history is pretty interesting and all over the place here. Just search this site by types of snuff and you’ll find more then you probably care to know. Though you’ll also find that some snuff styles will always have a mysterious origin.

I think it’s very normal for ones taste to evolve and change. Even after quite a few years.

At this point in my snuff journey, I think my favorites are, in order. Abraxas Fin, WoS Best Dark, SG London Brown, SG Scotch Black, Viking Dark, and SG Jockey Club. I like it when the Abraxas is so strong that I get a lump in my throat. During the day when I’m out I like the HDT, IDT #22, WoS SP, and Snafu medicated. They just seem easier to pinch, the darker snuffs I sniff off of a guitar pick.

You can’t nail me down on this one. I like what I happen to be using at the time.

Also is it normal that you change in flavour? I’d love some suggestions, cause I saw there is quite some knowledge here.

@JSnuffSnuff welcome to the forum. There is no right answer to this. Our members here run the full spectrum of “the same snuff all day everyday”, to “never the same snuff twice in a row.” You can listen to their suggestions but the only right answer is to take the snuff you like when you like. Keep an open mind and be willing to experiment and you will find what works for you.

I prefer moist snuffs myself… I have always stayed away from the snuffs that purport to smell like food.

@JSnuffSnuff – Your question about history warrants a whole thread unto itself!

initiali I really liked the WoS with different herbs, flavours, then I read that SP 1 should be good, bought it and was sold emediateley. Now the last bump is that I heard the word toast  got me one of those and I think I have almost all the toasts that is out there.

Isn’t that the great thing about snuff - smokers have a habit, we have an adventure! can you imagine a smoker having 32 different varieties of cigarettes on the go, deciding which one they’re going to partake of tonight? Just doesn’t happen.

My question is basically, what is the history and the difference between all these snuffs. I am very curious and would like to bring my knowledge up to the same speed that I am taking the snuff in.

As has been said, there is a lot of information about snuff history scattered around here, what fascinates me are the names snuffs have; why are they called what they’re called - some like Hollandse Bolongaro are explained by the manufacturer, but Brunswick, Grand Cairo, McCombie, etc, what’s the story there… And just to get back to topic, I’ve been trying my menthol stock over the last few days just to see if anythings changed, but no - SM500 (S&M more like…), Hedges (even worse), President, Ice Licorice, Gawith Apricot, instant sneezing and a blocked nose. What fun. I can just cope with Ozona Raspberry, but that’s about it. Yep, I’m a wimp.

If I had to choose just one type it would be toasts. Iht22, HDT, Irish d light and all the amazing toque toasts. These are closely followed by SG’s moist, coarse dark snuffs, Indian snuffs and scotches. The only type I don’t care for are florals. Oh and Poschls - far too much menthol (except schmlalzers of course, which I love).

I do love the variety. It’s amazing to be able to have a continuing adventure with snuff. Same thing I love about tea too.

So far, toasts are still my favorites.

No favoritism. Like 'em all equally. SP’s, toasts, scotches, schmalzlers, gwayis, rappees, KB’s, and your standard medium grind from about 6 different countries (England, Holland, Germany, Brazil, Israel, Poland, USA, India, And any other country that wants to increase my snuff knowledge). (technically Toque is made in just barely England by a Scotsman. Toasts are all based on Irish recipes but made in England. Santa Caterina is the last Italian snuff (but made in Germany) Spanish Jewel is no more. Moroccans seem to only do local trade, but snuff-in all its various incarnations and forms unites us beyond mere nationalistic human imposed borders. (Sorry going off on a tangent here. I like em all!)

I haven’t tried nearly enough snuffs, and it seems like my opinion changes every day. But right now Viking Dark is my favorite straight up snuff and 6 Photo Anarkali is my favorite snuff scent. But I can appreciate any snuff, at least so far.

I really like the schmaltzle style of snuff. No hitting the throat or drip with that stuff.
