I’ve noticed that since I’ve started with snuff that I seem to have a liking for the smokier scented ones, which mirrors my choice of Latakia and perique heavy blends of pipe tobacco. Conversely, I seem to enjoy floral snuffs which is completely at odds with my avoidance of floral pipe tobacco. It would be interesting to hear the opinions and experiences of fellow pipesters on here as to whether your taste in pipe tobacco reflects your choice of snuff.
No, I think my tastes are quite different. With a pipe, it was a struggle for me to use anything other than Cornell & Diehl Tuggle Hall, which is a latakia, perique, Cavendish blend. With snuff, I like quire a broad range, my tastes change, and I like both heavily scented and plain.
Yeah I’d say I’m a lot pickier with pipes (and smoking tobacco generally) than with snuff.
Not even slightly, I love latakia or strong English blends and tend to shy away from Aromatic pipe tobacco a bit but my snuff would be described as aromatic instead of straight if you asked a pipe smoker. I think it’s mainly because I have yet to find one that delivers enough vitamin N as SG best brown No4, once I find a snuff like that my answer might be different.
Complete opposites actually. I tend to smoke aromatics (not counting my love of VaPer blends) but I prefer natural snuffs most of the time except for my before bed/just waking up scented menthol.
In the way that i like more the plain tobacco yes, i prefer simple compositions in pipe & snuff
My pipe tobaccos tend to be plainer blends, burley, Virginia, perique. My snuff choices are all over the place, but I prefer tasting the tobacco in both. Few heavily scented tobaccos appeal in either category.
I lean pretty heavily to the plain side for both snuffs and pipe tobaccos. My pipe blend favorites are latakia, burley, Virginia and perique, similiar to @bigmick. My snuff favorites are Viking dark and blonde, Sparrow, Latakia AO 1860, Virginie, white snuffs, scotches and toasts. I’ll grab a menthol, sweet (schmalzlers) or perfumed snuff here and there, but the plain snuffs are my all day/every day snuffs.
not at all. I’ve never smoked a floral pipe tobacco for example
@bob try some Lakeland tobaccos. Nicely floral, but not for everyone.
^ I love Lakeland pipe baccy, especially GH’s Lakeland scent
Like others, I almost never smoke aromatic pipe tobacco but I am very very fond of aromatic flavored snuffs. The difference? Well, to me. aromatic pipe tobaccos almost never taste like they smell (I know of only a handful of exceptions) and the taste is quite bland compared to Balkans, English and Virginias, whereas snuffs match fragrance to “flavor” quite closely most of the time.
And in a different vein, while I love latakia in a pipe, I have yet to find a good (to me) latakia snuff.
just got some elmos reserve. im gonna have to grind up some 1792… this just isnt it. damn im disappointed. i like a very wide range of things in both forms of tobacco. i think my limit is soap scents, but people claim they get soap from lakeland pipe tobaccos, but i dont.
I could never really enjoy smoking floral blends but seeing as I seem to enjoy the offerings of F&T I’m tempted to give them another chance.
With the pipe, I can’t stomach the cased, perfumed blends, so I stick with straight VA’s, VaPer’s and heavy latakia’s. With snuff pretty much anything goes. It’s only with snuff that I can really enjoy flowery aromas in particular. Rose scented snuffs, especially the semi-dry ones are really amazing to me.
I too am like most here so far. In my pipe… non aromatics, trending more toward a Balkan or English mixture. Snuffs - well most anything goes. With the snuff I don’t have to worry about the things like tongue bite which is so common with so many of the aromatic pipe tobaccos.
Yes… mostly. I have always gravitated towards fire-cured kentucky, the love of my life, and fermented virginia/perique (where applicable), in all forms of tobacco consumption. My favorites range from the wonderfully rich and intense dark-fired Italian Toscano cigars, to GLP Cumberland, Triple Play, MacB Old Dark Fired, St. Bruno Flake, etc in a pipe, to snuffs including Latakia Ao 1860, St. Omer No. 1, American scotches, Schmalzlers, a few from SWS (Creme de Figue, Mull of Oa), etc. I highy dislike florals, in any shape or form. The tobacco I consume has to taste like tobacco first and foremost, and it should have hints of one or more of the following: dried figs, prunes, leather, wood, and smoked ham
I definitely went through a “progression” of preferences for both pipe tobacco and snuff. I’ve landed primarily on to toasts and plains and English/Balkan blend pipe tobacco. I don’t much care for the cloying fruity and floral snuffs anymore when I had to try every single scent out there. I prefer natural tobacco flavour in both pipe tobacco and snuff.
I’m not saying that there are not any good aromatics or fruity/floral snuffs but they are just not for me anymore.
Like many, I prefer dark complexity to my piping. War Horse, Ten Russians, Nightcap, etc. As for snuffs, I absolutely enjoy Hedges, Jock’s Choice, but also Thor’s Hammer.
