favorite style of snuff?

B

I’ve realized from my last order and how much I’ve been enjoying that yes I love snuff and need variety but the plan unscented snuffs in my opinion are the peak of snuff enjoyment. Hows about the rest of yous?

S

I agree.  I also like a good Latakia.  De Kralingse LatakiaAO 1860 is a good choice for me.  It is fairly strong but has that smokey hit of latakia without being at all overpowering or having any real additives.  Very pleasant.

B

I started out with plain like @stogie the 1860 was one of my first purchases along with taxi red and bernard aecht alt schmalzler then hit the english snuff plains.I had just tried 6 photo natural; nice but boring. It is easier to say what I don’t like and that is perfumed snuff; smells like old lady or teen spirit. I am not medicated enthusiastic, but it does have it’s place. I enjoy scented snuff as long as it not cloying with scent. I do like F&T high dry toast but that the first toast I had. Man this is a tough one why did I think I could nail one down? I will end with I have not found it as yet.

B

yeah it took years for me to have the revelation that unscented is my favorite type.

L

So far I am really preferring the heavy scented or perfumed snuffs. I like Indian snuffs like Ganga & Kamal and English snuffs like Jockey Club. I also like medicated ones. I keep trying plain snuffs, but they just don’t do it for me like the scented ones. I have concluded though, that I really dislike fruity snuffs (Ozona raspberry was way too sweet for me) the exception being Poschls Apricot. However, i realise over time this may change, as i have not been snuffing very long.

B

it does change I used to find plain snuffs to be boring and why bother. Now I can pick up more naunces in them then I could in the past. I do also really like perfumed snuffs too.

S

Like basement_shaman has alluded to there is also a WONDERFUL world of toasts out there. In fact a great way to get a fairly rounded exposure to them is to go to Mr. Snuff and check out the toast bundle.  Well worth it in my book.

Now I have a stupid question.  I don’t have a clue how to get the highlighted @basement_shaman or anyone else for that matter onto a comment.  Just a fogie I guess.  Help!

S

Oh my gollie…it just happened.  Coolness.  Tried before but did not seem to work, probably just messed up. Thanks for patience.

I

My preference is plain or lightly scented snuffs for my all day use. Toque quit, Natural, 6 photo natural, Or a good toast. I haven’t tried the Wilson’s natural but I’m sure it’s a future bulk purchase. That said, I adore SPs and always have one with me. I’m not fond of perfumed or florals Or fruity snuffs. I don’t care for most scotches either although that’s what I started With. Menthol is not my friend, But I will have the occasional pinch of O&G.

B

Thanks everyone it’s very interesting to read I hope more people add to this thread.

F

I started out with W.E. Garrett Sweet Scotch Snuff and thus have a big place in my heart for scotches of all types.  I just started getting into Toasts and have also found them quite enjoyable.  However, ever since I put F&T Patchouli in my schnauz, thus I get the most enjoyment out of heavily scented snuffs. i.e.  I find myself drawn to my 6 Photos whenever I take a peek in my snuff drawer.

M

With most types of tobacco I favor the unflavoreds, but there are so many wonderfully scented snuffs out there that I can’t resist. I feel the need to have as many snuff-styles as possible represented in my repotiore (sp?), then to attempt to find my faves of each style. Is that a cop-out with the question? Simply can’t decide yet…

P

Pretty much anything medium/coarse, moist, and strong in the nicotine is my favorite. I love the ease of snuffing, combined w/the amount you can get up there, combined w/ the ease of clearing.

U

My favourite style is SP snuff. I enjoy it all day. Having that said I like it to - now and than - also take a pinch sometimes of stronger flavoured snuff. But always I come back to SP. I think it is round about 90 % SP and 10 & other snuffs.

S

My favorite style of snuff is Toast.

My favorite Toast would be Whiskey & Honey followed by Toque Natural Toast.

I prefer plainer snuffs over all and Quit and Grunt are frequently in my rotation.

I do also enjoy an SP on occasion. My favorite being Wilson’s Irish Toast #20.

There are very few floral snuffs  I care for and no perfumed ones.

W

I prefer highly fragant and long lasting snuffs so if I have to choose only one they will be Schmalzlers .

On the other side lately I find that I´m carrying SP´s (Grand Cairo, yummieee! ) nearly as much as Schmalzlers, maybe my taste is maturing slowly…

N

Its got to be SP for me with Toque SP Extra and WoS Best SP leading the charge

S

Hey @FlippinBird sounds like you have pretty eclectic and broad tastes.

F

@stogie  Well I for one love all snuffs, haven’t came across one I didn’t enjoy!  Some I thought “meh” but they soon grow on me.  My nose doesn’t discriminate!

K

I did not try many kinds yet but I think the Indian kinds of snuff are growing on me and pretty sure my next order will include many to try out.

D

Poschl schmalzlers are pretty high up there for me but the SPs are putting up a pretty good fight the medicated snuffs are like the ring girls they show up in-between rounds and you are always happy to see them

S

Oh, I really like a good medicated snuff, the 'cool; feeling it gives, but they don’t like me back causing me to not be able to breathe at all.  Pretty consistant.  I am still trying to find a decent compromise be it smaller amounts, combined with something else or whatever.  Loving the SP’s as @distaind infers but really enjoying the toasts right now.  In fact am relishing a Toque Natural Toast right now.

Still haven’t come to a full appreciation for schmalzers yet but working on it.  Like @kougy says I am thrilled with the options out there and am making it a sort of mission in life to try them all at some point.  May I live long and prosper to make it happen!

@FlippinBird I agree that pretty much all of the ones that I have tried, if not love at first have difinitely grown on me be it whether my tasts have changed or the weather is right or heck maybe my biorhythms need adjusting.  Who knows.

K

@stogie you are right the options are massive and you need double or triple life time to try them all not only for the love of snuff and the nice collecting hobby but actually out of big curiosity! A non boring hobby at last

T

My favorite type of snuff is non medicated. I really can’t narrow it down from there yet and I do like some menthol snuffs.

H

Lately I have been using nothing but 6 Photo. I also like Latakias, schmalzlers and some of the F&T oferings (especially Morocco and Bordueaux.) I still like Poschl President.

Hmmm… could be that I am leaning towoard the Indian snuffs because the price is right!

A

The only snuffs I use are my own or a specific home blend of Toque/WoS. With the Toque/Wilsons home blend I use a mixture of plain toast, quit, natural, vanilla, WoS sherry and raspberry with a leavening of sweet scotch. I usually have that in bulk and I make up a large batch once or twice a year. The occasional Indian or Fubar. Not much else really these days. With the exception of a small amount of old Smith’s or F&T, I don’t have a collection because I have no interest in trying anything else, although I enjoy using the odd samples people are kind enough to send me.

B

Thanks guys I’am really enjoying this thread. And finding it super interesting. My second favorites are the heavily scented indian and F&T snuffs.

G

 I haven’t style of predilection,I enjoy Medicated,Schmalzler,SP,Indian,South African,Dutch,moist,dry and so on…

I really find my pleasure on snuff diversity(and I’ve got a pretty collection).Every new product discovered make me happy.I can’t imagine loose a subtle one only by unknowing.

I confess however  predilection for Samuel Gawith range and WoS moist like Princes,Kendal Brown or Best Dark actually,an other for diversity on mentholated.

B

@gandalf it too me years of snuffing to come to the conclusion that the most snuffing enjoyment comes from snuffing plain unscented snuffs.

G

@bob One good unscented plain is Mc Combie for me,always by S.Gawith plains there are the earthlies London Brown,Scotch Black,Black Rappee for example but without additional scents is not without scent by chance

One you might love is Makla Ifrikia equaly.

B

@gandalf thanks.

G

@bob you don’t know them ?.

B

not all of them I haven’t tride and S.Gawith actualy.

G

Lucky man ,what a pleasure discovering new S.Gawith (I have some too for the futur by chance)

P

cannot say, all have their merits

T

I have TONS of snuffs in my collection but…
THE ONES I USE ALMOST EVERYDAY:
grand cairo I carry in a snuff box
quit I also carry
gold label is the third one I carry and the rest I do at home daily atleast once…
tom buck
High dry toast
connoisseur cerise
Abraxas club

M

If I had to choose one style (and thank god I don’t) I’d go with toasts–HDT, lime toast, Tranter #21.  Then plains (London Brown, Black Rappee, Kendal Brown, Babaton Blue, NTSU).  Then schmaltzers.  Then medicated.  Then scotches. Then SPs.  Then floral/scented–way down the list–and I LIKE scented snuffs!

J

I absolutely love plain snuffs, with toasts and scotches making up the bulk of my rotation…head-clearing, strong, fine, and versatile.

J

I love all snuffs but I have to say schmalzlers and toasts are my two favorites. Klostermischung and Toque whiskey and honey being at the top.

C

Having only got back into snuff recently I am still experimenting and with the range available from @MrSnuff that will probably take quite some time. At the moment I normally start the day with Poschl Gawith Apricot which seems to clear my head for the day. During the day it is Toque SP Extra or Toque Berwick Brown or Toque Whiskey & Honey which has really grown on me. In the evenings I go for something more flavoured such as De Kralingse Musino or various F&Ts.

J

Plain snuffs, any grind.

B

I enjoy snuffs that are highly perfumed/scented and finely ground. I do enjoy that tobacco scent but I like it accompanied with some other scent. I have to be careful with menthol because my whole facial system shuts down with heavy menthols. 6 photo medicated, 66, special, and super Kailash are as far as I can go with menthol. I love Samuel Gawith snuffs because the scents are so complex and rich. I find myself reaching for either an Indian snuff or an American scotch like Tube Rose 90% of the time. I find with the finer grinds I can get a lot more in and I get the burn and nicotine hit that causes that instant attitude adjustment that I need during the day. Indian snuffs are just awesome because the scents take me to another world. Heavily scented snuffs appeal to me for that reason. It’s what I call “Nasal Escapism”. I can take a pinch and it totally changes my consciousness. Wow I sound like a hippy dipshit. Overall, I’ll take a pinch of any booty that shakes itself in my face.

M

I say…there aren´t good or bad snuffs…It all depends on snuffer´s taste, character and temper

J

I like 'em all. I like the plain, dark, medium grinds. I like the toasts I’ve had. I like the dowright dusty like White Elephant (as a matter of fact, if any of you have any you want to get rid of, let me know). I haven’t tried a schmaltzer yet, but I’m sure I’ll love that, too. But, I guess, since Viking Dark is my current favorite, I like the darker stuff at a medium grind for the all-day use. This is subject to change, of course. Although I am easily amused, I am also easily bored. Which is why I try to keep a wide variety accessable.

C

while the worlds most intereresting man doesnt always have snuff up his nose, but when he does, it has to be heavy on the mentholatum

P

Cannot pick one. To be honest, it is better this way. Snuff is such a wide world. Some time i love my toast more then anything, then i have weeks were i worship my schmalzlers heavily and then again, it is menthol all the time. So much to snuff, so much to enjoy.

B

Tobacco ,Herbal,Tribal, And Etheogen.

T

It’s like asking what my favorite type of music is. It’d be easier to say what I don’t like under any circumstances and that is subject to some change.

S

Schmalzlers are great but I like the medicated India stuff and FUBAR type , hell I cannot pin down my favorite either I like way to many lol

P

Anything powdered…or chopped.

K

SPs. No contest in my opinion (not sure thats worth that much though…)

S

South African style.

B

Thanks everyone I’am enjoying this post thanks for shareing.

B

Mostly plains and toasts - Toque Quit, WoS Natural, WoS no 22 are the current favorites. And lightly scented ones with strong tobacco aftertaste (for example Toque Vanilla). I don’t like SPs at all, but happily sniffing some menthols occasionally.

B

On the whole, I prefer toasts after starting out with medium and coarse snuffs. These fine and dry snuffs agree best with my nose, and I don’t need any blow-outs. I enjoy perfumed snuffs but I have to use them in moderation, or else my nose shuts down. I like to mix a nice Morlaix or Macouba in with a Irish High Toast to get the best of both worlds. If I had to pick one snuff to take for the rest of my life, it would be Wilson’s IHT22. That’s basically the only thing that I am cellaring, for that reason.

C

KBs, Princes and SAs

T

So far, it would seem Scotches. But, I’ve got a bunch of scented snuffs on the way and I’m going to order the Toast Bundle tonight.

H

It depends on my mood - though lighter snuffs are pretty consistent through the day and into the evening, the ‘heavier’ ones such as WoS Brunswick, Best Dark, and even SnuffStore’s Attar of Roses and Cafe Noir become a more attractive proposition as the day wears on. Scented or plain just depends on what I fancy at any given time. Menthol is pretty much out for me, I try every now and then and that’s it, instantly bunged up.

M

SP

E

SPs. Occasionally a coarse snuff like NTSU when I am feeling manly.

M

Easier to say what I don’t like, so far… but maybe KB’s, SP’s, Toque fruit with menthols, a bit of WoS SM’s and Hedges.

P

Medium grind, fluffy, moist, strong. Not sure what style this is, maybe “User Friendly”?

F

I tend to shy away from the floral and fruity varieties, but anything else is pretty much open game to me. I tend to favor plain snuffs when I’m at home with the leading players being De Kralingse AO 1860, Viking Dark and Navy Plain. At work I like mentholated/medicated/flavored, mostly McChrytal’s Clove or O&G, De Kralingse AP, and Poschl’s Lowenprise, Andech’s Spezial or Presidents. Toque products are starting to work their way into my snuff routine with SP Extra and Camphor & Clove. The jury is still out on the Berwick Brown. I’m revisiting schmalzlers, since I haven’t had them in years. Bernard’s Wiehnachtpris is quite good. I plan on revisiting the toasts, since it’s been thirty years since I last tried one. I haven’t gotten around to that yet, but I’ll probably include some on the next order.

F

While i do like to try new snuffs every now and then, it seems i always fall back to snuffs that are scented with coffee. The snuff that got me hooked on it was Cafe Noir.

J

HI Guys, I know I might be a little off, but I am a newbie to the snuffin’business at it for some months now. initiali I really liked the WoS with different herbs, flavours, then I read that SP 1 should be good, bought it and was sold emediateley. Now the last bump is that I heard the word toast got me one of those and I think I have almost all the toasts that is out there. My question is basically, what is the history and the difference between all these snuffs. I am very curious and would like to bring my knowledge up to the same speed that I am taking the snuff in. Also is it normal that you change in flavour? I’d love some suggestions, cause I saw there is quite some knowledge here. thanks, Happy Sniffing! Joseph

C

South African followed by Kendal Browns

B

@JSnuffSnuff the history is pretty interesting and all over the place here. Just search this site by types of snuff and you’ll find more then you probably care to know. Though you’ll also find that some snuff styles will always have a mysterious origin.

M

I think it’s very normal for ones taste to evolve and change. Even after quite a few years.

D

At this point in my snuff journey, I think my favorites are, in order. Abraxas Fin, WoS Best Dark, SG London Brown, SG Scotch Black, Viking Dark, and SG Jockey Club. I like it when the Abraxas is so strong that I get a lump in my throat. During the day when I’m out I like the HDT, IDT #22, WoS SP, and Snafu medicated. They just seem easier to pinch, the darker snuffs I sniff off of a guitar pick.

P

You can’t nail me down on this one. I like what I happen to be using at the time.

X

Also is it normal that you change in flavour? I’d love some suggestions, cause I saw there is quite some knowledge here.

@JSnuffSnuff welcome to the forum. There is no right answer to this. Our members here run the full spectrum of “the same snuff all day everyday”, to “never the same snuff twice in a row.” You can listen to their suggestions but the only right answer is to take the snuff you like when you like. Keep an open mind and be willing to experiment and you will find what works for you.

H

I prefer moist snuffs myself… I have always stayed away from the snuffs that purport to smell like food.

H

@JSnuffSnuff – Your question about history warrants a whole thread unto itself!

H

initiali I really liked the WoS with different herbs, flavours, then I read that SP 1 should be good, bought it and was sold emediateley. Now the last bump is that I heard the word toast got me one of those and I think I have almost all the toasts that is out there.

Isn’t that the great thing about snuff - smokers have a habit, we have an adventure! can you imagine a smoker having 32 different varieties of cigarettes on the go, deciding which one they’re going to partake of tonight? Just doesn’t happen.

My question is basically, what is the history and the difference between all these snuffs. I am very curious and would like to bring my knowledge up to the same speed that I am taking the snuff in.

As has been said, there is a lot of information about snuff history scattered around here, what fascinates me are the names snuffs have; why are they called what they’re called - some like Hollandse Bolongaro are explained by the manufacturer, but Brunswick, Grand Cairo, McCombie, etc, what’s the story there… And just to get back to topic, I’ve been trying my menthol stock over the last few days just to see if anythings changed, but no - SM500 (S&M more like…), Hedges (even worse), President, Ice Licorice, Gawith Apricot, instant sneezing and a blocked nose. What fun. I can just cope with Ozona Raspberry, but that’s about it. Yep, I’m a wimp.

S

If I had to choose just one type it would be toasts. Iht22, HDT, Irish d light and all the amazing toque toasts. These are closely followed by SG’s moist, coarse dark snuffs, Indian snuffs and scotches. The only type I don’t care for are florals. Oh and Poschls - far too much menthol (except schmlalzers of course, which I love).

B

I do love the variety. It’s amazing to be able to have a continuing adventure with snuff. Same thing I love about tea too.

D

So far, toasts are still my favorites.

X

No favoritism. Like 'em all equally. SP’s, toasts, scotches, schmalzlers, gwayis, rappees, KB’s, and your standard medium grind from about 6 different countries (England, Holland, Germany, Brazil, Israel, Poland, USA, India, And any other country that wants to increase my snuff knowledge). (technically Toque is made in just barely England by a Scotsman. Toasts are all based on Irish recipes but made in England. Santa Caterina is the last Italian snuff (but made in Germany) Spanish Jewel is no more. Moroccans seem to only do local trade, but snuff-in all its various incarnations and forms unites us beyond mere nationalistic human imposed borders. (Sorry going off on a tangent here. I like em all!)

B

I haven’t tried nearly enough snuffs, and it seems like my opinion changes every day. But right now Viking Dark is my favorite straight up snuff and 6 Photo Anarkali is my favorite snuff scent. But I can appreciate any snuff, at least so far.

S

I really like the schmaltzle style of snuff. No hitting the throat or drip with that stuff.

L

this letter is from 1822 (february 17) he works in an island in meditrenian sea and can’t use coarse snuff and wants his friend to send him fine albanian snuff.

H

I’m with bob. I like my Bordeaux, I like my SP, but plain snuffs are where it’s at.

5

Way to early for me to say. I love Royal George and Macouba but not too frequently, and would rather have Tom Buck or Best SP up there as a frequent use. Cherry Menthol is a good one for clearing out and getting the juices flowing, but again I wouldn’t want to use it regularly during a day. How do you go about choosing a favourite type though? Surely frequency isn’t a fair basis for that. I’ll happily chug down a load of beer before moving onto a nice single malt to finish. The whisky is favourite, but I wouldn’t want to be quaffing it all night I want to find my favourites and start getting stocked up on them, maybe 6 kinds in all, and then have other “guest snuffs” as it were for variety. I reckon another few weeks and I’ll be ready for ordering in the larger quantities

S

I can no longer decide - it was always toasts in the old days but since expanding my exposure of a greater snuff World to include many more types & suppliers from around the Globe - I just can’t decide if there is one type that I like more than others. They all do great things for me.

Same. I started out loving Poschl, then fruits snuffs esp Toques, then toasts esp Toques, then scotches, then Indian, then SG Kendal browns and their other coarse moist snuffs, then the Vikings, and now I can’t get enough SPs. Apart from single florals (like Violet, Rose, wallflower, but with the exception of Lavender Dark), I love all snuffs.

_

this letter is from 1822 (february 17) he works in an island in meditrenian sea and can’t use coarse snuff and wants his friend to send him fine albanian snuff.

@linguist… Heard from your 2 friends lately…what they snuffing these days? ( heard the quit snuffing… Moved on…so to say )

H

I like all snuff types and will give any of them a try, why not? But I prefer fine, dry, and non-mentholated. Toasts and Scotches are usually my orders of the day as well as other flavored SP/Floral Dry Snuffs. I especially like the dry F&Ts.

S

So far, and it’s pretty early days, I’m preferring menthol and medicated, but often mixed with something. My superstar mix so far is definitely Samuel Gawith Raspberry with WoS Extra Menthol (about 60/40 respectively). I keep coming back to that one every single day - it’s delightful. I like moister, medium grinds, because of the ease of taking large pinches and the resulting nicotine hit. Those qualities combined with great flavours are a winning combination for me.

O

Right now i prefer the course ground snuffs (nonmenthol). Easier to take. Having a lot of trouble with the toasts but I’ll keep trying.

_

@OhioSnuffer… Welcome… When you can from what you described. ( if you like plain tobacco ) you woulda like TAXI blue or red ( red real strong nic ) BABATON BLUE or NTSU Black … a American snuff that is coarse ( may be able to find in Ohio ) is railroad mills rose scented ( it doesn’t have rose or floral scent … I hate that aroma and don’t know why they named it rose scented ? ) it comes in a big brownish amber bottle … This northern Yankee can get it here in Atlanta … If the rednecks don’t kill me first for buying there grandmas stash…hillybilly hell… It has a slight brandy earthy peaty aroma… I just revisited it last night after 4 months and liking it.

O

Thank Aanycaards. I’ll have to try some of those.

3

@OhioSnuffer welcome to the forum, I’m from NE Ohio myself, I’m fairly new to this too, and I did the same thing started on the medium grinds and over a little time moved more to the finer, toast type snuffs. Less fill and clogging, that and I love toasts. Don’t buy too much of any one thing yet, try a variety and don’t throw anything away your tastes will change. No need to force anything it’ll come.

X

a American snuff that is coarse ( may be able to find in Ohio ) is railroad mills rose scented ( it doesn’t have rose or floral scent … I hate that aroma and don’t know why they named it rose scented ? )

Its called Maccoboy. It’s not named “rose scented” its described as rose scented because it is rose scented.
