Below is my review of Old Mill Nocturne, which I just posted to the snuff reviews site (my username there is restinginthismoment). I thought I’d repost it here though to open it up for discussion. I’d be curious to know what everyone else’s impression of this snuff was. I’m not the type to jump on bandwagons. I’m honestly not. In fact, when something looks like it’s getting trendy, my automatic assumption is that it’s already been ruined. Maybe it’s a cultural hangover from high school. I don’t know. What I do know, however, is that I’m falling in love with the good Chefs creations. Despite my inclination to recoil. His flavors serve only as highlights and sidekicks to the most masterfully blended tobacco bases I have yet to experience. Nocturne is no exception. As far as the base goes, the burley is unmistakable, but well balanced enough to cut the almost-too-much nicotine bomb it can be if left on its own. The balance is delicate and hard to achieve, but not at all surprising as he was able to pull off the same balance with his Tennessee Toast (which I also loved). What is surprising is his successful use of Latakia. I love Latakia in my pipe tobacco, and it is what makes an English blend an English blend. Using Latakia in a snuff is difficult, though. The flavor is so heavy that it usually masks any other flavor that might be there. Somehow, this is not so with Old Mill Nocturne. It actually highlights them instead. So there is the natural raw cocoa flavor of the Burley, the bonfire smokiness of the Latakia, plus what I detected as a very natural black cherry, and a hint of what could be described as black coffee. My wife, who does not use tobacco, said it smelled better than sex. The nicotine is there, and even strong, but with a strange delay effect to it. Do not waste this by using it for the nicotine, though. This is my newly designated nightcap snuff. My favorite time to take it is before reading bedtime stories to the kids, and the flavor lingers for long after I’ve drifted off to sleep myself.
I too have newly acquired this fine snuff. I am no reviewer but chocolate covered cherries with coffee come to mind. I also use it as a nightcap snuff, or in the evening with a beer or cup of tea to unwind before I dive into some O.M. Dreamcatcher. Good review.
@Hitsuzen , great review! I agree, the moniker Nocturne is very fitting. It’s dark and very very flavorful but the balance of everything comprising this snuff gives such pleasure, especially in solitude. I like this one as a nightcap as well!
