Cigar like snuff

I’m going to second Juxtaposer, on Sparrow Green Label.

I’ve been trying some Wilson’s SP styles. Their Gold Label is broadly in this category It is said that they use a different base tobacco for this snuff (American rather than Zimbabwe). There is some citrus but that aside, on sniffing this stuff I momentarily smelled the unmistakable odour of the wrapper of a really fine Havana cigar. Not a lighted cigar mark you…

Sparrow Green?.. Really???.. Man my nose must be busted or yall must be smoking cigars made out of hay and Indian spice. Anyway I stand by my first recommendation Toque Natural Toast…dead on ringer

lol … sorry for your busted nose.

If you can find it and want to drop the swag, Xichang might be the snuff you are looking for.

Try Bernard “Civette extrafein” it does the cigar thing for me.

I had found that unmistakable cigar quality in F&T’s Santo Domingo when I had first discovered it about a year and a half ago and was so impressed by it’s depth and ‘cigarness’ that I immediately ordered 7 50gr. tubes of the stuff! Of course, mind you, there’s some cedar, sandalwood, and a touch of absolute violet in there too, but they only compliment–the cigar taste is the overriding taste for sure IMHO. HOWEVER…recently I placed another bulk order of Santo Domingo, and was sorely disappointed in the new batch’s lack of the black, cigar-ish tobacco base that I had come to know and love. I don’t know what happened!! I don’t know if this is an anomaly from one batch to another or if, God Forbid, they changed the recipe. Let’s hope it’s not the latter. It’s still great and excellent and I would still recommend it, but it’s a tad different. It’s a few shades lighter in color, and without the unmistakable cigar-ish richness that I fell in love with, but I’d recommend tossing a tube in on your next order just for the hell of it to see what your nose thinks. I’m still hoping it was just a cosmic aberration of sorts. I imagine you have tasted Santo Domingo somewhere along the way. Perhaps you’ve forgotten about it. If you’ve never tried it, I would definitely recommend giving it a shot. Let me know what you think. By the way, your recommendation of SG London Brown was a good one. I have recently taking a liking to SG Black Rappee and Scotch Black. I think, as per that style, Black Rappee wins in my book…at least for now.

I’m afraid I can’t add to the list of snuffs for you to try, but I can tell you what NOT to try! I have tried making snuff out of several different cigars, and bizarrely, they all ended up with a chocolatety flavor. Now, this is not by any means unpleasant, and I have been enjoying the occasional pinch here and there, but it struck me as odd that it tastes nothing whatsoever like a cigar. I have used some cigars a friend brought back from Jamaica, a slice of some enormous $30 cigar that another friend bought (I persuaded him to let me cut a thin section off the end before he lit it) a couple of cheap UK and US cigars (Hamlet, White Owl, Dutch Masters etc) and a few Cubans I bought from a tobacconist in the UK. Absolutely every one of them turned out to have the same chocolatey taste once pulverized.

The Gekachelter Virginie That I keep in a crock that is in my humidor now has a cigarish cedar scent. It’s very nice.

I have to agree with those who have suggested FUBAR Grunt as the most cigar-like snuff. F&T Santo Domingo does have some hints of cigar-type scent, due to the dark Zimbabwean leaf used, but they are pretty well covered up by the other fragrance ingredients. It’s a very good snuff, but not one I would recommend as a choice for a cigar lover.

Cigar snuff? METTAIJER snuff from Molens is DEFINITELY the most cigar type snuff I’ve had. Reminds me of it big time. GREAT snuff if you like sweet, aromatic, plain snuff styles…

I’ve tried both the Braniff Whiskey and Caribbean, and I’d agree with the posters above: the menthol has kind of spoiled what may have been a good snuff. There’s definitely a cigar-like base to the Caribbean (the better of the two), but it’s somewhat overpowered by the menthol. There’s also a poschlesque bitter afterdrip to the snuff that I’m not so fond of. A shame - if they’d made the Braniff snuffs more distinctive, I think they’d have become an everyday carry for me, but as it is, I think they’re a “meh” out of ten.

why not try taking a natural or a toast and letting it sit with a cedar wrap for a day or two? I tried that with Toque quit and a cedar wrap from my cigar collection. I left it a little too long and it’s like stuffing a tree up my nose, but i’m sure a day would do it.

@Snaveltje - Braniff has a great snuff in there somewhere, and yes the Fubar Grunt is very cigarish, especially the last batch.

Getting the Xichang snuff can be a gamble. I bought it when Dave first stocked it, and my tin was rusted to hell. Considering that it came with a warning that the tins might not be in great shape, this wouldn’t necessarily have been a deal breaker for me, but after numerous pinches of it, every pinch smelled of nothing but aluminium to me. If anyone else has had better luck with it, I’d be willing to try again, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up for it, and I’d certainly not expect to be able to get a nice tin of it regularly.

And how about simply make your own snuff out of cigars by using an electric coffee mill? I had great results that way with pipe tobacco. It wasn’t too easy, it took a lot of time, but the result was fantastic.

I just finished grinding my first test patch of pipe tobacco in my rock tumbler and it came out great. It’s a rich tobacco scent with a hint of chocolate. I’m not sure how a cigar would work out, but pipe tobacco is a wonderful thing to use.
