Railroad Mills Plain is my favorite scotch to put in the nose, mild and satisfiying all day long. Bruton is my favorite scotch for the lip. Checkerberry is another favorite dip, can’t stand it in the nose though.
gents/ladies … another thread from the dead … but a common one(favorite scotch, top ten american snuffs, etc.), so thought i would post on this one with my question … in my cart at mrsnuff i have the following: Navy Plain 3 Thistle Strong Square Plain Garrett Scotch along with some 6Photo(my foray into Indian snuffs) I am waiting on Dave to get Rooster restocked … i like the review that notes a vinegar smell to the Rooster, not to mention the nic-kick everyone claims for Rooster and/or Brutons … should i wait for the rooster? or do i have similar enough scotches? i’m thinking the rooster is needed. do the ones in my cart differ enough to merit ordering? did i miss any that folks think are “essential” … i chose these based on the reviews read. as a point of reference, i love the vinegar smell in GH’s Irish D, which really has me curious about the Rooster. Thoughts?
Rooster is a very unique scotch. I would email Dave to see when they are expecting more rooster because I would definitely wait a week or two for it. Of those you listed, I’ve only tried Garrett Scotch which is a fantastic snuff. Also, enjoy the 6 Photo! I have only been introduced to their snuffs very recently and I’m blown away by all of them.
@pike mopers … thanks … i am looking forward to the Cheetah … i did email Dave … he says they should be back up soon. Just waiting to pass through customs. Funny … he gets it shipped from USA, waits for customs, then it reverses process to get back to us … crazy!
If you ordered Three Thistles Strong and Square then you got the cream of the crop, with those two you may find yourself forgetting about Rooster altogether
I agree with n9inchnails. However, if you can’t wait for Rooster, try Standard. Its quite similar, but perhaps a hair milder.
@Xander … Dave is still in the process of restocking Standard as well, in fact, the only one he hasn’t run out of is Bruton … but based on what I have read on snuffhouse and the reviews, doesn’t sound like my cup o’ tea … I can wait … might as well get the Rooster!!
@n9inchnails … i think the thing i want re:Rooster, while looking forward to Three Thistles Strong and the Square … is that vinegar scent … i love it in GH Irish D and haven’t come across it in anything else yet.
@snuffbrant Ok then, yeah Bruton is like Rooster but without any of the nice bits. Have you searched locally for scotches? I would think your area should have at least some. I’ve found plenty, but never in upper or middle income areas, so use that as your clue.
@Xander … i have inquired at local tobacco shops … as I am in Cincinnati, cross the river from Kentucky, I would think I could find the US Scotches in some mom and pop shop … i continue to look, hopefully i will come across some soon. I hear you about the demographics … will keep that in mind. May also inquire with US Smokeless to see if there are local shops carrying. EDIT: Xander, your comment on demographics paid off … called the local cut rate tobacco and they have Red Seal, Bruton and WE Garrett! How bout that! Now i can try them … i am pretty friggin’ excited … same feeling when I discovered I could grab General Snus locally! Whoop!
Also, have you talked to Bart? He’s local to you, might have some tips.
will PM him … thanks!
so just got back from picking up Bruton, Red Seal and WE Garrett Scotch … haven’t yet tried WE Garrett … but the Bruton is great - flavor, smokey, and strong! I am quite pleased. Can’t wait to try Rooster! Also, maybe some of you feel this way … but Red Seal was definitely quite Honey Bee-like. Very very sweet … love it as well … but considering blending with my Honey Bee.
I have several HUGE TUBES of Bruton. They make it locally here in Nashville. Also Red Seal. I’d mix RS with Honey Bee- add more of a nic hit. I tell you what though… I enjoy toasts over scotches ANY TIME, ANY WHERE! SO much better IMHO. This is why I hate being in America. I have all the scotches I could ever want, but I have to order the plain snuffs that I actually like. You Europeans are lucky. And to think all you guys like our scotches… They’re alright, but the Toasts have more character IMHO. As for scotches- I could trade any one of them for F&T HDT all day. You can have 'em! lol
@snuffbrant don’t even bother inquiring with US smokeless… they’re no help at all and couldn’t tell me who carries their snuff. I also found GENERAL SNUS locally!
thanks for the tip, transistor. Toasts are number 1 for me as well … but Scotches may well be number 2 … with SP bringing up the three spot. One thing I can say … after taking quite a bit of Bruton yesterday … suddenly F&T HDT and all other Toasts become much smoother and easier to take. All types have their merits, I think … and fill the general need for “snuff for the moment” or cravings …
from a UK perspective scotches make a great variation from the mainstream UK types. We have nothing like Rooster, - vinegar is there but also, once you’re used to it, a bit of sweetness. And the delivery service of nic is swift. You folks like to KNOW that you’ve had a sniff. This stuff is brilliant after scmaltzlers and heavy styles. It doesn’t shoot through and I get the full flavour. Gets the nose working really well. Toasts are brilliant but they don’t cut it like Rooster.
I don’t mind scotches, but you try one you’ve tried them all. They all taste the same and are similar in nic strength. I must have about 10 scotches and I can’t tell the difference between any of them. I’m amazed at all the Americans on here who can tell the difference, to my nose there is absolutely none. Stefan
That’s why I’ve held off buying more of them. I feel the same way approximately about schmaltzlers. I know they are different, and I like them, but I don’t see a lot of point in having all the different brands. I’d take Sternecker Echt and Rooster as good representatives of the style. Having said that I’m still waiting to try the Bernard Double…
