American Snuffs

Hi Guys, I received some US snuff from one of the forum members… my god - that’s a whole new level of snuffing!! It’s much finer then the ones I’m used too, which mean for me it goes much easier into my lungs…! And that Rooster : OMG! that’s stuff is killing me! The one thing I like is the sweet taste, and also due to the Fine grind it does not matter me so much when it hit’s my throat. Anyway - enjoying them!

I know what you are saying those american scotches are FINE. I have we garrett. Which I love but it takes alot of practice in using it. They deserve a place in any collection I believe.

Thats because American snuffs were intended for oral use. Or at least that is how people use them here in the south. Mostly older women

Hey! Isn’t that funny, I just got my first American Scotches today. After trying my first one, “Dental Mild” I immediately thought of Juxtaposer’s notion of it’s not are there American snuffs as good as Euro snuffs, but are there Euro snuffs as good as American snuffs? Upon getting home I gave “Navy Plain” a whirl: solid tobacco goodness, with a very nice cigar-like tone to it. The “Starr” Scotch is so smooth, easy to take, and tasty I’m at a loss for words. I’ve got another five to try, and I’m looking forward to them all. If you’re a novice to intermediate snuffer (maybe not rank beginner, though) and were a bit leery of these snuffs, do try them. Why I might even order some “Rooster” next time around…errrr, maybe the next, next time.

Honestly, I don’t find American snuffs as good as European snuffs. The American Scotches all have the same scent to me. Yes, i am color blind but am I scent blind? I think not. Plus, I don’t like finely powdered snuffs with the exception of Dholakia White.

Starr is good and plain. The grind is much less fine than in others I have tried. Its a good one to start out on. For full flavor I recommend Three Thistle and Square, though they can be challenging.

Wait a minute, is that the impression I gave? I think I was just trying to point out how different they were and that they are however similar, not the same at all and therefore cannot be compared. To that point they are a must try for any snuffer. One of Xanders choices above would be perfect. The notion that they are intended for oral use may very well be why they are so different.

I tried the Oral use… Taste is "ok " - just don’t like the wet messy tabocco mouth experience… Just filling my nose with soem European Goodness… A/P by the Kralingse… ahhh…

You can dump some Scotch Snuff in a bowl, add just enough water to get a clay, and make a snus pris with it.

Having snuffed away at various US sweets and scotches over the past couple of years, I think I prefer European (esp. English) snuffs for day to day use. Scotches & Sweets are good - don’t get me wrong - but apart from maybe Rooster, I couldn’t use them all day. Checkerberry & Maccoboy are different animals, much more ‘European’ in composition, and again I like them occasionally to vary my snuff rotation.

@ tom502 : I thought about that… I will give it a try this evening.

I really like US snuff and love the fine, powdery body of most of them, but they always seem a bit shallow in terms of character; are there any courser, more moist variants out there?

Checkerberry and Maccoboy. They are different than the fine dry standard Scotch.

Scotches certainly weren’t originally “intended” for oral use–people just started foolishly putting it in their mouths. Here in Michigan at least, everyone who encounters Scotch snuff knows that it goes up your nose.

@ snuffster: Have you had 3 Thistle? I find that one to be more complex than most scotches. Also what tom502 & toffeenose say, Checkerberry and Maccoboy are very different. Although, you should read the reviews before purchasing, as they have strong, but unique, tastes. Strong flavors usually polarize people into love it-hate it camps.

I love the maccoboy, I have yet to try the checkerberry tho.

Checkerberry has a good mouth taste.

I’m going have to get some American snuffs. I have a feeling my next order is going to be a somewhat large one. Not that I’m complaining! Rather looking forward to it :D.

Did I misspeak? Juxtaposer, sorry if I quoted you incorrectly. The gist of what I got from one of your posts a while back was that American snuffs had, for the most part, nothing to be ashamed of. That they were a valid choice for me to put in my snuff collection. I’ve started my day with Starr, and I’m really liking this stuff! Hope that rectifies the damage. I was all upset that I had thought i had come late to the party again: PACT would mean I would never get them again, what with no USPS to Canada. But the posting from Mr.Snuff that he and NicRush will ship from the UK has made my day!

Yay!
