What's In Your Nose? #13 (Part 2)

On a menthol kick today. Rosinski - Berliner Luft. A rather nice delicate Menthol SP
And at the other end of the scale 6 photo Gold Rush a menthol bomb.

Wilsons Grand Cairo . Some SPs are fruity ; some are peel-y . Grand Cairo is an outlier that is kinda ‘pithy’ in my nose . Strong scent but a little bitter . I’m really enjoying it . A definite future purchase but I’m not sure where it ‘fits’ in my snuff routine yet .

Advent penance snuff: 6photo Duck Soup.

I’ve had this for a long time and haven’t wanted to finish it, but don’t want to waste it either.

It’s like someone threw the whole rack of kitchen spice into a tin and labeled it snuff.

Fribourg and Treyer - Patchouli. Having grown up in the '60’s I’ve been exposed to lots of Patchouli over the years. This is nice, not too much in my face and certainly doesn’t have the underlying unwashed body smell that I can remember (as many people used to use Patchouli oil to mask ’ other’s smells).

Poschl Kloster Andechs. I wonder if it’s true that he has Andechs beer yeast in it.

J&H Wilson SP No. 1 and McChrystals O&G in rotation.

@Jonny if we could get some of the 100g tubs of JH Wilson SP No. 1, or Rumney’s Brown as @Pikey requested, that would be great.

There is no option for JHW bulk , last time I looked anyway . Just Wilsons , Viking , F+T and Dr Rumney .

As @Pikey says, wilsons don’t do bulk sizes unfortunately. We are in discussions with McChrystal’s to get 100g 250g 500g soft pack pouches across the range so we will see if we can pull that off. If we show the way there then maybe we can bring Wilsons onboard.

One thing to remember though, is just how insignificant we are to these manufacturers. Far and away the majority of their product gets shipped to the US. We order boxes of tins from them, but in their warehouse they have pallets of product ready to go over to the states to service the huge network of tobacconists. We can suggest innovations, and they might listen, but they don’t really have any incentive to make exceptions for us.

Doesn’t mean we won’t try though

I’m surprised to learn how much they ship to the US, considering the seeming difficulty many in the US have in finding snuff for sale.

The pouch thing I’ve never been entirely convinced by. Roderick has been using them for some time and it has the obvious benefit of being a more compact form for shipping, but there’s something nice about a tub - even though it contains a lot of wasted air space. Pouches are clearly the way to go for mail order, but the curmudgeon in me feels the need to grumble about them

I hear you about the soft pack pouches but we are hoping to do a little better than just a plastic bag that is more convenient for shipping.

If you will indulge me, here is some context:

Our motivation goes back to the review I did when I first started. I asked the question: Why do so many people dislike and distrust MrSnuff? There is no point in being defensive, if the market is sending signals then that should be treated as data and acted upon accordingly.

And one of those data points was that MrSnuff had a reputation for selling stale product, and this observation has had a profound and ongoing effect on the company.

To deliver fresh snuff we must turn over our inventory more quickly. One way to do this is to hold less inventory and order more frequently. This meant organising ourselves to make the entire chain more efficient. But that wasn’t enough because for many products there are large minimum orders, so an alternative approach was needed.

To increase the throughput velocity we needed to lower our prices. So we did that as well (and still are). We have negotiated lower prices where we can, and passed that on, and where we can’t get better prices we have cut our margins. All in the relentless pursuit of our goal, that no tin of snuff shall spend more than three months in our warehouse. Given that some product used to spend a year or more waiting to be sold, that is quite an ambitious target, and we are nearly there.

What else can we do to maximise freshness?

Packaging is another obvious angle of attack. So we looked at how other unrelated products do it, moist perishable foodstuffs for example. They will often come in pouches, you know the kind I mean, double-click fasteners at the top to keep the product fresh after opening. A tear strip across the top to seal the moisture in whilst it is on the shelf. A convenient design that lets the pouch sit up on its own so you can spoon the contents out without it spilling. The plastic inert so it doesn’t taint the product. If it works for fresh food then it will work for snuff, and it will be way better than a shoddy plastic tub with no real seal to speak of, and much better than a simple plastic bag whose only benefit is shipping convenience.

Fresh snuff is at the core of this. It has led to lower prices, big strides in operational efficiency, and innovation in packaging. As a side benefit, we will also get bulk sizes for products that wouldn’t otherwise have them, and we get a chance to have some nice designs and artwork because surely even curmudgeons like a nice bit of art now and then

I wouldn’t underestimate the performance of the tubs . I’m a fairly recent convert to the Sharrow tub lifestyle but they seem to keep an open tub fresh to the very bottom . I was pretty skeptical but I was assured by a few peeps they worked .

Mid sized McChrystals pouches would be a nice choice . Current it’s 9gs or 200
