@ cstokes: I remember that. That’s why I thought I’d ask PhilipS. He knows more about that stuff than the Wilson’s people do. Do you know that incomplete list of WoS snuff types (tobaccos used, flavorings etc) that is on the Sheffield Exchange page? I asked Wilson’s if they could send me a complete list. They replied: Many thanks for your e-mail and interest in Sharrow snuffs. Please take a look at our website www.sharrowmills.com for a comprehensive list of snuffs and their categories. The site also gives a look at our history. Attached is a ‘Snuff by Post’ listing the snuffs and the prices should you wish to order any directly. Not really what I wanted to know is it?
The idea that SS doesn’t stand for anything is pretty… odd.
Xander - regrettably I don’t know what S.S stands for. I’ve just looked at my very tatty catalogue dated 1964 and (frustratingly) every S.X is qualified except for S.P and S.S. This suggests that Wilsons no longer know themselves what they stand for. If Wilsons don’t know then I doubt anyone else will know for certain. Scotch Snuff has been suggested, but I’ve never seen this appellation in any Sharrow listing myself.
