@Walrus1985 Very good! We had a massive manhunt for missing tortoise here in Rathgar, Dublin, for a couple of days but little fella had just burrowed himself in back garden because of cold weather. Story is all over the news; Florentine, age about 100, is kind of celebrity now. Current owner and tortoise were even on radio this morning.

Yeah, what is the purpose of that little “nub”? I see it on clay pipe too.
Well, on clays, it was to hold the pipe when the walls of the bowl got too hot, or so I’ve read. I have a Northern Briars churchwarden with two ‘mouse ears’ that let you put it down without it falling to one side or the other. I couldn’t tell from the picture that yours had a foot rather than ears.
