Snuff plays a very minor role in the film. It’s one of the few dvd’'s I actually bought, albeit second hand. From the first scene one is gripped by the terror of the time. No actions of the basterds could be over the top in terms of brutality. Perfect set up for a Tarantino film. The acting is terrific and if one is a Jewish American, it’s a marvelous feel good revenge film. Unfortunately it is not based on a true story, but it is a delicious fantasy. I think that Nazism represents pure evil. But actual Nazis probably were just average schmucks caught up in the zeitgeist of Hitler’s Germany. Not to make excuses, but people who love authority are putty in the hands of a sophisticated propaganda machine. Far more sinister in my mind are those who with the benefit of 60 plus years historical perspective would deny the “final solution” was official German state policy. If I were the “Bear Jew” today, I would want nothing more than to pay a visit to the current president of Iran. He needs to become more familiar with the business end of a Louisville Slugger, imho.
You’d be spending your time better introducing the Ayatollah to Mr. Slugger, stitch. Honestly, I think Ahmedinejad isn’t as stupid as he seems. He’s rather well educated, so I’d say he’s either the victim of a propaganda machine in his own country (which I doubt, he gets out too much for that), or he just toes the line set by Khomeini. Iran is like the USSR used to be. The Ayatollah’s at the top, and the elite have to say bs they know is false or else risk being taken care of. Of course, there’s plenty of other reasons to beat the crap out of Ahmedinejad.
Well shikitohno, point well taken. I can make room in my fantasy for the Kahmini, the lesser Ayatollas and bin Laden too. Ahmedinejad does not appear stupid to me, but rather a calculating, evil motherfucker. He is a willing tool and he relishes his role. He is attempting to tap into the eternal well-spring of chauvinism and hate for the infidel. That is far easier for a theocracy and its unwashed masses to stomach than looking inward for the causes of their suffering. Self-examination is painful, but it is real. Unfortunately it plays no part in the 8th-century medieval thinking of religious tyrants. Far easier to blame others for everything.
People wanna hate on Iran, but worse than Iran is Saudi Arabia, and even Pakistan, but those are our “allies” so their “evil ways” are excused, or not mentioned.
Not to detract from this discussion (originally about a movie) but I’d just like to say that our “ally” Israel has and continues to do some pretty mean stuff as well. The US and Canadian govs (with many more im sure) give tons of military and monetary aid to a country that uses illegal munitions against civilians, ties civilians up and uses them as bullet shields, and bulldozes the homes of innocent people. And don’t go calling me an anti-semite as that seems to be the label for anyone who opposes Israel these days. Also this thread will probably be sunk/deleted soon so i’m sorry for contributing to its massive digression from the originial subject.
There are lots of threads about the movie, I couldn’t care less if this one is deleted or sunk. I guess we best not debate hot political problems here. Maybe when Alex puts up v2 of snuffhouse there will be a section for discussion of serious issues and complex world problems. . Until then, john8363, I’ll won’t call you an anti-semite. I’ll just let other people draw their own conclusions. But really now johnny, when your back is to the sea and every one of your neighbors wants to drive you into it, you might have to get a just little bit mean to keep from being annihilated. Of course us Americans and Brits never ever did anything mean, right? No, although you may not be an anti-semite, you do hold Israel’s behavior up to a higher standard than any other country. Surely not because it’s a national homeland for the Jewish people. That’s all I have to say in this thread.
I don’t hold up Israel to an impossibly high standard at all, you really shouldn’t jump to a conclusion like that based on a couple lines of text. I acknowledge that war crimes are commited by plenty of other nations like the US, UK and even Canada! That being said, any news out of Israel is a constant stream of “oh we are fighting barbarians”, “oh we get bombed everyday”, “our women and children are being targeted”. Well guess what, the Palestinian people can (and do) say the exact same thing. Problem is you don’t hear about the Palestinian point of view on the news. How is an Israeli rocket hitting a school/hospital any more humane or decent than a Palestinian suicide bomber detonating? For the record a two state solution is the only way to solve the mess down there, and I don’t want to see Israel wiped off the face of the earth or anything similar. As well, you simply proved my stereotype by proving that in this day and age, anyone who disagrees with an Israeli policy or criticizes the country is labelled a anti-semite and/or neo-nazi.
oh oh
I second that. It’s much better not to talk about such things but I want to remain friends with you guys. Trust me I could talk and talk about this and I won’t cause no ones gonna change their mind.
There are some Orthodox Jews who feel Israel as a state is against the Torah teachings, and are anti-zionist. They say the Mosiach must arrive before Israel is established.
Geez guys I really hate closing threads…
I will say no more about the issues raised here. I will wait and see if there’s a place in snuffhouse v2 for political discussion, without conceding the argument. If not, so be it. We can still talk about snuff.
Alex has stated on the “moderator” thread that politics will be specifically forbidden on V2, unless he changes his mind of course. Most of the whispers and private emails I get seem to suggest that the majority of members agree with that idea.
Yeah online I get to hear enough political bullsheets that make me doubt humanity in a serious way. Nice to have a refugee from it. Seriously there are enough place to talk politics. For example there are always youtube posts with cats that seem like an acceptable place for political discussions.
Political discussions can turn any board into a mess. They are just a topic that gets people worked up. Even if you have a separate area for it, it still tends to just spill over into everything when it gets heated. Ken
Sink it I hate politics.
Politics for me are one of those “hot button” topics that is guaranteed to raise my blood pressure to dangerous levels. I like discussing Beer, Snuff and food. On the other hand, when people find out I’m a vegetarian, things sometimes get messy. Never understood the vehement reactions for that.
Another thread doomed to the political blither cemetery. Good riddance I say.
It might be because vegetarianism in America often gets tied to should-be domestic terrorists like PETA. So you get something that becomes politized and people forget it might just be a simple diet choice. Heck I rarely eat beef, and pork is a rare exception (love my carolina BBQ) but the fact is they just don’t agree with me any more. I typically eat very little meat and when I do usually seafood or some poultry. The only reasons, it is what works for me. No anti-insert institution agenda, I promise. Ken
You’ve gotta be kidding…
