Some items I have used to make my humble whiffing snuffs, Believe it or not, in a glass pt container a couple of any of these will do rather nicely…the more used, the better the smell/flavor, and the longer left without opening to ‘cure’ or whatever with the scented material, the better. I have because I am basically one cheap bastard used these things to some effect. Constant Comment tea bags, same company makes these also and I have used them both and work really nicely too…Earl Grey tea bags…Raspberry tea bags…cloves and cinnamon sticks. I see no reason why a nice jasmine flower or so would not be wonderful. Also Vanilla beans, I would split them open and leave in a nice quart sized ball jar with a couple of cans of W.E.Garrett sweet snuff and wait a month or so. I still wish I had the funds to buy the really nice snuff like Toque and wilsons, Poschl too, but alas…here in the USA times are getting more fun all of the time. Maybe next yr I can go crazy and stock up big time!
Also happened to think of one I wanted to try using to make my favorite style of snuff, menthol with eucalyptus. Hope you can find this at your local store, HyVee stores carry it if one is nearby. "DR MACGILICUDY’S MENTHOLMINT SCHNAPPS’ This stuff will open your sinuses like a leaf blower stuffed up your nose…No wait, I like that!..This stuff if mixed with a couple of cans would make a snuff worthy of my beloved Dr.Rumneys Mentholyptus snuff from my younger hippy days…ah yes when snuff was cheap, and you could buy it where you got your patchouli cologne and incense, and ‘cigarette’ papers…
Well, I have yet another homemade snuff for you all. I have one grand cold, head, chest and body. So my wife, loving as she always is ( I am a very lucky man mind you ) tells me “Make yourself a hot toddy, get some whiskey, lemons and rest.” So I does as she tells me to do. I go to the store, pick up my Garrette sweet snuff, 2 of the 12 tins at the place, (no thanks to walmart…nuff said) Open one, peel off some lemon zest, NOT THE WHITE PART…that has too much moisture and will mold…make sure you can see the polka dots of lemon oil from the inside of the rind. Got a grand big fat lemon and peeled it thus. Took approx 1/3 of a can of said Garrett sweet snuff and lo and behold it is really nice, and this is only after an hour or so. I personally suggest adding some Whiskey to it as well, How much, well that would depend on if you like it or not…AS YOU CAN TELL, I do. I should think about a teaspoon will do nicely for the half can of snuff. I may let it be and not add any whiskey…we shall see. But for now, Lemon zest is all that I have added and it is rather nice. One thing I have thought of, is Raspberry’s I can find them at the store in the frozen section, but I should think that the frozen ones would cause the condensation to attract moisture and make the whole lot mold…I dont think I should like that. If only I had some fresh ones about. Now my store does on occasion have fresh cherries. Not sure of the season for them, but whenever that might be a can of snuff for lets say 10 cherries would be about right. I would have to watch it for getting moldy though. Oh by the way, for executives at TOQUE, WILSONS, POSCHL, and others mind you. I AM AVAILABLE as a flavor consultant, wage negotiable, as long as it is a lot. I want to live in IRELAND, with a nice pub down the lane, some property, nice home, open acct on the company at the pub, free snuff of course. and later things to be negotiated…They can contact me here at their earliest convenience…thank you.
http://www.frontiercoop.com/ Here you folks go, actually it is a link to a place in Norway Iowa USA where they sell all manner of spices and herbs, small and bulk amts. I belonged years back to a food coop near chicago that carried their items. If you live near a HY Vee store they carry their items as well, you might be able to order thru the store and get it without paying shipping charges. Hy Vee is very helpful to deal with. I applied at Frontier Herbs for employment back in 1991, and the place smelled heavenly. There are so many things that you could use they have, maybe one of them will ring a bell for you. Neat website, if nothing else it might be interesting. Hope this helps.
Last night I poured the last 5 drops of Glenlivet into 10 grams of Stokers Plain. Left it over night. It fluffed up nicely and carries a delicious whisky scent. It is very smoky and long lasting.
I tried scenting some WE Garrett’s with Eucalyptus oil last year. It came out terrible! @thatjerk I love Bacon Salt. A plate of home made chips/fries with it turn into a gourmet treat!
Bacon Salt is the best, ain’t it? Definitely recommend it for the bbq’d American Scotches.
New snuff, Tequila Shot…Ok, so I am a bit anal about this stuff. Ok, all right. So be it. I took the aforementioned ‘Lemon Snuff’ using the zest of one big ole lemon and most of a can of W.E.Garrett Sweet snuff. It was mighty nice. Well I took about 1/3 to 1/2 shot of cheap ass tequila and threw it into the batch. Turned into a brown MUD…ok dumb idea. I know, I know, if it aint broke, don’t try to fix it. But I am a stupid bugger that way. Sure enough. Oh, another thing. Cheap tequila does NOT MAKE AS GOOD a snuff as lets say one that costs a wee bit more, lets say Sauza, Cuervo etc. This CRAP came from Walmart, I had never tried it before and IF I HAD NOT been such a stubborn IDIOT. I would have figured out that if you start with crap, guess what you end up with what…duh, CRAP. But actually I lucked out. this tequila is so so at best alright? BUt, when mixed with the lemon snuff, aint too bad. BUT if I had used something better, it might have been pretty damn good. SO what is the lesson being learned here…you can get lucky and not have wasted money, but if you actually use a good product it gives you a much better quality snuff. So, if I have given the rest of you, who are not cheap ass bastards such as myself a lesson learned without you wasting money, time and snuff. So bet it. I have not wasted it all. Long story, made short, the snuff is ok, well actually not too bad, not terrible as it could have been. BUT, it might have been AWESOME if I had done it proper in the first place. What I did to get rid of the excess (LOTS AND loTS!) MOISTURE. I had it in a tin, nice one about 5 inches wide by 4 inches tall. I put in a boatload of CLEAN paper towels to wick up the moisture, it did that pretty darn fast. I replaced it about an hour or so later and it is getting the mess wicked as well. I did not want the tequila flavor/scent etc to evaporate so I left the tin closed. We shall see in about a week how it does. I hope that I have saved others from screwing up. I am one of those folks who learn by trying and screwing up. Too bad I did not leave it as a lemon snuff, but I had to know. I have about 1/3 of the original batch in another container so all is not lost if this turns out to be CRAPPY snuff. we shall see. Thanks for listening to my rants and stupid experiments…
Update, actually the tequila/lemon shot snuff turned out rather nicely. I was a bit hesitant about admitting my goof on using too much tequila, but once poured there you have it. Turned out nicely. Still a bit more moist than I care for, but that is what evaporation is for. I would not mind trying Drambui, but I wonder if the Toque Christmas pudding will be like that anyhow, I will see. If I like it as much as I hope, I am going to get a 50 gm bag of it and hoard it thru the winter months.
Bulk Toque bags are cool, but right now the Sixpence contest is going on, so buying a handful of tins would be what I would do. Increases your chance for winnning.
I got this week a 25 gm tin of the Xmas pudding, I did not see a coin in it. Unless it is under the snuff at the bottom? Really nice snuff. I am going to try some of my father in laws fine roses to make a batch. Seems like so many styles do have rose for an ingredient. I am not sure there is a bad snuff scent, but I kinda like the tinkering around thinking about scents and actually trying my hand at it.
