Hi new to the group here, live in Missouri near KC, It is getting really hard, even here to find W.E.Garrett Sweet snuff and others. Kmart used to carry it here a couple of blocks away, but not any more. I will ask the mgr if they can still get it. I took my last 3/4 can of it and made some snuff for my usage. I found an old hand thrown stoneware container, holds about 2 oz my guess, with this nice glaze and a big cork in it. I filled it with W.E.Garrett sweet that I had previously mixed with some bourbon whiskey, sour mash of course and we had some coffee house flavored coffee beans that were flavoured with a sort of a hard to describe aroma, it was called “jamaica me crazy” Really smells good. I made a gasket of thin plastic and put the cork over it to seal in all the aroma and snuff. I think that in a few weeks I should have something really nice to use. I have heard alot about the ‘schmalzer’ type tobacco snuff you can buy in big 100gm bags. Poschl and a german co. make that runs about $6 per 100gm. That is pretty cheap considering that snuff is getting hard to come by. I want to get a couple 50 gm 5 photo himalaya and super himalaya snuff containers as well. I will keep you posted on how it turns out. Wish me luck. thanks steve in Missouri
Been only an hour or so, I couldnt wait to try it…has a sort of coffee, whiskey, butterscotch smell and YES, it burns at first but the after aroma is really nice…try it. I could not believe it turned out so nice this soon. By the way. the beans are covered with snuff because of the oils, but I hope I do not lose too much of the volume. I think this is one of the nicest ones I have yet tried, and I am an old school snuffer, age 57 so that is saying something. Please give it a try. Sometimes you get lucky, guess I did. steve in missouri
Update on this snuff, it has only been a few hours and I can tell you a few things if YOU try doing this. First of all, dont go whole hog on the flavored coffee beans, I am guessing but I think I had approx half an ounce of them. WAY too many. If you make some in lets say a used skoal etc tin or something about that size, may I suggest only about a teaspoon worth. First off the aroma is strong of coffee and mind you it is VERY nice, BUT the thing is, the scent/aroma lasts for almost an hour or more, that is all you can smell for that long. May be too much for some people, I can cut it down with lets say a new can and it should be fine. I wanted to let the rest of you folks know. I tend to go overboard on things and this time I did again. I hope you havent wasted money following my experiment. If you do try it with about a teaspoon then perhaps it wont be so strong, almost overpowering. Sorry for the snafu.
I can’t believe you’re having a hard time finding Garrett in Missouri–the regular scotch was in pretty much every tobacco shop I went to when I was in Minnesota, and scotches are more of a southern thing.
Wow minnesota much be a better place to find it than michigan, thats great Mike. I am fairly new to snuff also, STILL trying to get off the smokes I havent tried any homeade recipes but sounds interesting Steve.
Well, to be fair I only went into two strip-mall tobacco stores in the Minneapolis suburbs but they both had Garrett. I also went to “The Golden Leaf” in Minneapolis and though they didn’t have any scotches or sweets they had a nice assortment of nasal snuff (Toque, Dholakia, F&T, McChrystals I think) so if you ever drive to Minneapolis you should definitely check it out. Oh, and when I asked the strip mall places who buys their Garrett the answer was “old ladies” from one and “old people” from the other.
I know what your saying mike, I went to a tobacco store a few miles from me and when I asked him if he would order different varietys for me , he laughed and said " They would sit on the shelfs forever". I think I am becoming a snuff bloodhound and if I ever find a brick and morter shop selling it I might buy it all, lol.
Hi again, the jamaican blend as I now call it has tamed quite a bit since I made it and took out over half of the coffee beans. Still has a really nice smell to it. I think that the sweet garrett is the way to go with it. Nice combination. Smell lasts for an hour or more…tons of nicotine too. Trust me, I love the pouch redman and leaf tobacco and this has a ‘twang’ to it when whiffed. If you like coffee when you walk into a starbucks etc. Then this will work for you too. A note here, I am trying to get everyone who can to do as I did and get on planetfeedback.com and send Walmart a message to start carrying scotty snuff. Go there and see my THREE requests in a week for them to do so. I gave them all the info they needed, and no reply so I got a lil miffed and replied to my requests and basically brow beat them for not replying. Perhaps if anyone who logs on here sent a similar msg to them, they might eventually get the point. If you go to Mr Snuff and others you can see that there must be something like 30 or so brands of various scotty snuffs. I for one would love to get some W.E.Garrett Peach, and Railroad I think “checkerberry” another one is a cherry blend. Plain ones are nice, and as I did you can mix em yourself, If I can piddle around and do it, anyone can. I have used tea bags of 'constant comment" in a sealed glass container and left it for a month or so, it is nice. It isnt that hard. If only walmart realized that we have a product we want, and that customers want to buy it, then why not sell it to us and use thier considerable buying power to buy it cheap and sell it to us for a really reasonable rate, like say $1.75 pr 1.15 oz container of USA snuff. www.planetfeedback.com please go there and get on their rumps about selling the stuff we love, I bet that most of you have a walmart within walking distance from your house, why not have your snuff where you buy most everything else at…Please send em a request. thanks
I haven’t set foot in Wal-Mart for over 10 years. It’s a personal choice and I don’t think it makes me better than people who do (I can afford to support small businesses like little tobacco shops–not everyone can). My grandfather had a little grocery store of his own, and I think his work life was happier and more fulfilling than the average manager of a big chain grocery store. I pay a bit more for the idea that it’d be nice to live in a world where small businesses can survive. Also, the service is better and shopping is less of a baffling ordeal.
I agree mike if I can, I always try to support the small shops . But for alot of people, it is a price thing. I do plan on buying some tobacco from my local tobacco shop to try to make homeade snuff.
I know some sams clubs carry scotch snuff.
I buy from local shops whenever I can, otherwise there wouldn’t be any local business?
I happened to recall some places where you might get things to flavor/scent your snuff and make your own. HyVee stores here in the midwest carry bulk spices from a place I have visited in Norway Iowa, Frontier herbs. Now Frontier sells, or used to sell to food coops like the one I belonged to. There are things like sasafras and orange peel dried granules, others stuff too…I am going to try puting some cloves in with my snuff, but i sure as hell hope that clove oil dont fry out my nasal passageways…hmmmmm maybe wrap it first in cloth or something.
I have some Bruton absorbing the odors of bacon salt and grated cheddar and monterey jack cheeses wrapped in coffee filters and inserted into the Bruton container at the moment. Started it at about 2100 last night, and I must say that the infusion smells lovely. I am going to try it out at the 24 hour mark tonight.
Update, I sampled my snuff… the Bruton has pretty much lost any leathery smell it one retained. What is left is a bacon and smoked cheese flavor that will linger in your nose for about thirty minutes. I am really surprised that it turned into a satisfying snuff. I need to order some Toque Cheese and Bacon for a comparison.
Update to the update… I had removed the coffee filter containing the cheese after 24 hours into my experiment. I did leave the coffee filter with Bacon Salt in my 1.15 oz Bruton container. After sampling this with 72 hours of aroma infusing time, all I can say is wow… This is some good stuff. The cheese flavor as far as I can tell is gone and I now have a tin of Bruton that smells of bacon. If you want to experiment with scenting Bruton (or any snuff really), and you like bacon, I definitely encourage you to try flavoring it with Bacon Salt. I want to leave you with this final thought… everything really should taste like bacon. Oh and thank you Roderick, and all that inspired him, which in turn inspired me for this inspiring experiment with snuff infusion… inspire. (I had to say inspire again, in hopes that it would inspire you all to try this experiment for yourself.)
I was told today that there exists a bacon flavored Absolut vodka.
There are a quite a few different brands of Bacon flavored vodkas out there. You can even make your own bacon vodka at home by following the recipe here:Bacon_Vodka
There are so many spices one can use to make homemade snuff, I forgot to mention that there are some items NOT TO CONSIDER using. I went to the local headshop style college hangout thinking I could find snuff there, nope, I also thought that they might have old school scented oils to use. This I did some yrs back PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY AND SNUFF trying this stuff…I dont trust it. I have a nice big snuff container which is half W.E.Garrett sweet with Jasmine oil. But, it has that chemical, fake smell about it. I am afraid what I am doing to myself. Sounds like a carcinogen waiting to happen. It is better to waste the whole thing than harm oneself. I dont know, sometimes a lil bit of knowledge in the hands of someone simple minded such as myself is a very, very dangerous thing. Now spices that are natural are another matter. Those would probably be ok, cloves, cinnamon stick, allspice, ginger root slivers, orange rind granules, sassafras granules, the list goes on. Whatever is in oil form, I dont trust it. Do what you wish, but my guess is that wherever the stuff is made, some suit is gonna cut corners and put some BAD thing in it to make more money. I hope I havent harmed anyone by suggesting making scented snuff. I really do.
@ graybeard19 I hope that anyone flavoring/scenting their snuff would be wise enough to use food grade items when doing so. Don’t feel guilt for another persons stupidity. Would you feel guilty if you told someone that snuff is wonderful and later find out that that individual is laying out 10 foot lines to snort? The point is people are responsible for their own actions and if someone decides to do something unsafe it certainly is not your fault, unless of course you gave them specifically instructions that would harm them. Just the same, thanks for the heads up on not adding ingredients not meant for human consumption to snuff. One thing I want to add, which has been discussed in the forum before, is do not try to free base the nicotine in your snuff with baking soda. See why by following the discussion here: Has anyone tried this?
