Just made my own snuff. Wow!!!

Real simple. Took half a packet of Borkum Riff Cavendish Cherry Pipe tobacco which was pretty dry as I’ve not smoked in a while. Stuck it in the coffee grinder. Sellotaped the on button and left it running for 10-15 mins, shaking the grinder every few minutes to ensure even grinding. Transferred the resulting coarse grind snuff to smashboxes. That’s it. Just had a few pinches, and wow!!! Very nice. No burn, prominent cherry flavour, big vit N hit. I’m now hydrating the smashboxes by spraying the lids to see if that improves the flavor even more. This has inspired me to experiment with more home made snuff making. Edit: 25 mins on and the cherry flavour is still VERY pronounced in my schnozz. Edit 2: the nic hit from several pinches of this stuff is making my knees wobble. I think I might have found a new hobby!

Ahh, Homebrew. It is exciting to make your own, right? And fun to sample it and whatnot. Right on Oscar!

That’s why I’m not worried about running out of snuff due to any new legislation passed by the anti-tobacco fanatics. Homemade snuff is easy to make, and pipe tobacco is one of the best raw materials for snuff production. I’m glad I started “cellaring” some of my favorite pipe blends a few years ago. Of course, I would miss many of the fine snuff blends available to us now, but I could still enjoy some tasty homebrewed.

Way to go OscarWabbit! There’s hardly anything as satisfying as learning you can make something for yourself that serves as well as the accustomed variety. Glad to hear your experiment was so satisfactory. Now keep the hobby alive with new experiments!

@OscarWabbit Thanks for posting this. I would have never thought to use pipe baccy for snuff making. As cheap as it is around here I’m very much looking forward to trying this myself. Big thumbs up bud!!

@mikemoose: you were my inspiration mrmichaelsnuff, the YouTube where you make your own snuff from pipe tobacco. I’ve got a few packets of pipe tobacco left so I’ll be making more. @pipen good point. @ddave thanks buddy @fischtix thanks dude. It’s good fun and worth a try.

Oscar From your thread on Swiss prices I can see why you would go down this route. I’d do the same. Good quality essential oils are always available and might help if you have a favourite flavour - though I don’t have any experience in this…

Nail on head @Peter. I’ll carry on buying snuff of course, but making my own is still a good idea because pipe tobacco here is cheap whereas snuff is not. On having a few more sniffs of this home made cherry snuff, I’d say the cherry is too pronounced (I was too drunk last night to care) so I’ll be using this snuff as a mixer to lessen the cherry hit. I’ll also check out snuffgear and see what oil fragrances they have.

I’d be interested in anything you might learn, for instance, about the use of a ‘carotte’ or plug, to be grated, as people apparently did in the past. Can you buy the appropriate tobacco? I suppose a fine cheese grater would do the job. The result would be ‘rappee’? I personally am happy with what I can freely buy at a reasonable price. Keep us up to date on your researches.

I wonder how a non flavored non aromatic would work using your own essential oils as @petersuki would work…maybe a Captain Black Gold…it already has a slight vanilla aroma to it. Maybe grind it as you did the cherry and place it in an airtight container, and put a small piece of tissue soaked with vanilla extract on top…my be a nice SG Vanilla substitute for @ddavelarsen?!

Hers’s a good link for oils @OscarWabbit http://snuffgear.com/index.php?main\_page=index&cPath=22

Thanks @FischTix  Just been looking at snuff mills they sell at snuffstore. I wonder if they give a finer grind than my coffee grinder.

OscarWabbit I have just ground up a few gs of McBaren gold blend. Mainly Burley? Very dry and unused because I didn’t particularly like smoking it. This tobacco seems perfectly fine for snuff. The result has a very distant coffee element as I’ve used my coffee grinder! The snuff is quite strong and seems fine to me. I think you can make a virtue of necessity and probably produce some remarkably good stuff if you set your mind to it. I might use half of what I’ve made with a touch of sandlewood oil I have. Given the price of snuff in Switzerland, you mentioned, I’m certain I would take this route and produce something of quality for myself if I was in your position. Best Wishes

How would you apply oil to snuff to impart its flavor? Just mix it into the tobacco? Very curious about this, as Fischy’s suggestion is dead on for me; I’m totally out of one of my favorite snuffs of all time, and unable to reorder in small quantities. Bulk is going to take a while to be made and posted from UK, though that’s about to get started. Meanwhile, I’d love to make a bit of my own, and I have some RYO tobacco that makes a fine unflavored snuff.

The stuff I’ve just knocked up is nice. Tastes a bit like Sam’s Yellow Crest. Plenty of room for improvement, moisture etc. Fermentation techniques would need more research! Don’t know what tobacco makes the feisty English SP sort or the black sorts. I guess I will just put a drop of essential oil on a piece of tissue. Let it sit on top in an airtight container overnight. Shake it once or twice and then remove it. In this country it would be more expensive to make the snuff from pipe tobacco than to buy it. I am sure there are people in the snuffhouse who know a lot more about this than I do!

Be careful with the essential oils. They go a heck of a long way in tobacco. A tiny drop would be fine for 50gs I should think. You can add more but you cant take it out.

You just gave me a few ideas …to be honest never tried to make my own snuff apart from fine griding some sample tobacco I received from Mr. Snuff. I believe it was some indian tobacco from Dholakia, I am sure actually but it was too peppery for my taste. Thanks for inspiration I’ll get right to my coffee grinder

@ddavelarsen @petersuki hit the nail on the head with the oils. It works just like rehydrating snuff, and do heed his warning…just a lil dab’ll do ya!!

Yeah home made snuff is great, Just ground up a couple Acid blondies last night, Have a bunch of Pipe tobacco I got on special about 6 years ago. Been sealed in class canister jars, the big ones, 5lbs of each flavor. Can enjoy them in my pipes and in my nose. Hope I don’t wear out my grinder, lol. edm

Just made 50g of snuff from Indian Summer pipe tobacco. Dried it completely first in the oven then ground it in the coffee grinder. Very very nice!!! Not the best pipe tobacco but it makes awesome snuff.
