Grand difference in Grand Cairo

Had the same experience with Old Paris recently. Three different orders (one straight from the mill) and most certainly none of them are Old Paris. Not even close. Reading all of the reviews I could find on the internet it seems that a lot of folks who are not familiar with OP are reviewing something else. It is not finely ground or med. brown. Should be coarse and dark brown almost black. Like Princes, Santo Domingo, Best Dark, etc. Would like to order bulk but afraid to.

Old Paris should not be anywhere near black.

@Xander Well, certainly dark brown and coarse. This is the description from Wilson’s site: “This blend, a favourite of Beau Brummel, has the strange wine-like quality of maturing during storage. This rich, full-bodied snuff, dark in colour and coarse in texture, is ideal for the moderate user who enjoys an occasional satisfying pinch.” The strangest review is the one comparing it to Spanish Gem. Not even close. I could relate to the comparison with Santo Domingo. Needless to say I will not be ordering bulk.

Hmm, no I wouldn’t say its anywhere close to Santo Domingo either, though I would say its closer to Spanish Gem, than SD, but that’s not it either. Its quite unique. If anything it reminds me of Morlaix, except yellow not red, and much less pungent. definitely not a dark or a rappee though. Anyway, I’d rather not steal the show from Grand Cairo whose thread this is. We can continue in one of the Old Paris threads.

I have to agree. Firstly, the tins of Old Paris that I’ve snuffed were indeed quite fine and medium brown. Probably best to review the product as received by snuffers. I’d be interested to know if anyone has had a coarse, dark Old Paris, it sounds lovely. Second, the latest batch of Grand Cairo I have is sharper in flavour, finer ground and less reddish coloured than previous tins I’ve tried. It isn’t an improvement. Still very nice, though.

@peppernut1 “I’d be interested to know if anyone has had a coarse, dark Old Paris, it sounds lovely.” Exactly what I have been saying. The “old” Old Paris was dark and coarse. Moving Old Paris discussion here: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/7454/old-paris#latest
