I finished off a 10g tin of this stuff as soon as I got a 25g tin and now that I’ve tried the snuff from the 25 g tin I wonder if the one I had before was just mislabeled Gold Label. There’s strong citrus aroma I didn’t experience with the 10g tin that I initially mistook for ammonia but as it aired in my snuff box (I’ll have to start a new discussion on the bargain it was) the citrusy scent stuck strong as ever. I still get the huge nic rush and I think that this is what GC should be but I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences with this fantastic snuff. There’s no way I missed the citrus I get from this new tin iin my last tin. It is a powerful zest that I find as exotic as the name suggests.
Let me consult CStokes (who currently holds a 90% share in Grand Cairo), before I comment on this one, for liability reasons. I have heard of rare cases of mis label/filled tins, so it is possible. The 25g tin sounds like the real deal.
I am quite certain it is the genuine article as well. Definitely glad I got 25 g this time.
GC does have a big zesty citrusy thing going on, and the nic hit from Gold Label is comparable-they’re not dissimilar snuffs in my opinion, it sounds like you may have had a mislabeled tin of GL first time around as you suspected. Do you prefer the old tin or the new? GC and GL are both on my Desert Island Snuffs list. Delicious
I really like the new one I received although I was quite fond of the other one. I’ve tried gold label but I ran out before I received the grand Cairo in the 10g tin. They were similar though and I’m not disappointed by either one. I love GL and GC and I’m definitely glad to have the real deal now. Now that I’m sure I’ve tried both I think I like the GC a little more for its flavor. The leathery GL was an acquired taste for me but it’s an excellent snuff. Now that I don’t have it I might miss it.
In order to be certain, you must mail me all of your Grand Cairo and I will notify you if it is indeed legit or not.
( increase to 95%…) :)]
@cstokes4 haha I think I’ll take my chances and call this the real deal. If its not it’s still good as hell, although that points to it being the GC.
Would you buy gold if you didn’t know if it was real?
SERIOUSLY?
Okay this is what I was talking about when I asked this question over a month ago…
I was hooked on Grand Cairo until I ordered like 5 cans of it recently and it’s WAYYY different now
I was swearing they changed something in it- it really reminds me of FandT MOROCCO and less like the moist, messy grand cairo “red rappee” (I know it’s not really rappee but they claim it is)
It’s nice to see someone other than my fiance notice this too…what’s going on?
I had a 25g tin of Grand Cairo last year, and I liked it so much that I ordered a 260g bulk tub of it in a black Friday sale.
The first tin was medium coarse grind, with a definite reddish color, and a higher moisture content, more like F&T Old Paris. the smell was very SP-like but with a twist. very nice.
The bulk order was a shock. very brown, very fine grind. I’ve never tried “lemon grove”, but this is what I would imagine it smells like.
Not the bergamot of a good SP, LEMON and lots of it.
I’m not especially happy, but, I’ve found that if I mix it with a lot of W.E Garrett, I can sniff it. It’s going to last forever though.
Thank God the Best SP that I ordered with it does appear to be Best SP.
Wow. Mine has lots of lemon but I did catch some lavender in there and some of the leathery taste of gold label with an exotic twist
Since I spotted this post, I have been snuffing the new Grand Cairo. About 4 hours now.
Still can’t detect any lavender and I’m sure it was in the old 25g tin. Very lemony.
I’m afraid that it is not going to be the all day snuff that I expected, but, it’s growing on me.
There is definitely lavender in GC
Sounds to me like despite so many enthusiastic reviews, Wilson’s cant decide what they want this snuff to be. Very interesting.
Grand Cairo is like a SP on steroids, it’s one of my favorites.
I recently picked up a few 25g tins of it myself. I think it might be that I got a particularly fresh batch, but aside from the usual citrus and spice, I’m picking up a distinct gin note to it now. Very good juniper scent. Not at all what I recalled it being like, but I still really enjoy it all the same.
I just received a 10 gm tin of GC from MS. To me, its very much like one of the F&Ts. I can’t tell which one yet. As soon as I opened the tin I noticed a strong floral, citrus scent that instantly registered in the scent bank of my brain. It registered as a F&T. Anyone have the same reaction? It is quite nice, I think I’ll have a little more now.
Now I have identified the scent. Its like Morocco by F&T, as Transistor noted above. That said, its still very nice and lemony, but I wouldn’t call it a red rappee at all. Not even close in grind, but still most and reddish.
Enjoying bulk Grand Cairo now and it’s quite different or my nose is different than previous experiences. Superb, complex SP in almost perfect grind and moisture with a very pleasant scent, which can help you in erotic adventures. Sorry lads, this really doesn’t make any sense but I’ll leave it like it is.
Had the same experience with Old Paris recently. Three different orders (one straight from the mill) and most certainly none of them are Old Paris. Not even close. Reading all of the reviews I could find on the internet it seems that a lot of folks who are not familiar with OP are reviewing something else. It is not finely ground or med. brown. Should be coarse and dark brown almost black. Like Princes, Santo Domingo, Best Dark, etc. Would like to order bulk but afraid to.
Old Paris should not be anywhere near black.
@Xander Well, certainly dark brown and coarse. This is the description from Wilson’s site: “This blend, a favourite of Beau Brummel, has the strange wine-like quality of maturing during storage. This rich, full-bodied snuff, dark in colour and coarse in texture, is ideal for the moderate user who enjoys an occasional satisfying pinch.” The strangest review is the one comparing it to Spanish Gem. Not even close. I could relate to the comparison with Santo Domingo. Needless to say I will not be ordering bulk.
Hmm, no I wouldn’t say its anywhere close to Santo Domingo either, though I would say its closer to Spanish Gem, than SD, but that’s not it either. Its quite unique. If anything it reminds me of Morlaix, except yellow not red, and much less pungent. definitely not a dark or a rappee though. Anyway, I’d rather not steal the show from Grand Cairo whose thread this is. We can continue in one of the Old Paris threads.
I have to agree. Firstly, the tins of Old Paris that I’ve snuffed were indeed quite fine and medium brown. Probably best to review the product as received by snuffers. I’d be interested to know if anyone has had a coarse, dark Old Paris, it sounds lovely. Second, the latest batch of Grand Cairo I have is sharper in flavour, finer ground and less reddish coloured than previous tins I’ve tried. It isn’t an improvement. Still very nice, though.
@peppernut1 “I’d be interested to know if anyone has had a coarse, dark Old Paris, it sounds lovely.” Exactly what I have been saying. The “old” Old Paris was dark and coarse. Moving Old Paris discussion here: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/7454/old-paris#latest
