Now I’ve seen like 200 or 500g tubs of snuff I’m curious if anyone has actually ordered one of these bad boys and if so which one did you order. I can’t fathom ordering such a large quantity snuffing that much of only one type and if so how well and long does it keep. I could see possibly someone buying and distributing out small portions.

What are your thoughts?

N

25 & 30g tins are the biggest I’ve bought.

P

Many here buy these tubs. Other than an occasional tin I only buy a minimum of 250 gram canisters/drums/tubs but more usually 500 grams. Why?

Firstly it’s far cheaper method of procuring quality snuff. Using Sharrow as an example - a 20 gram tin costs £3.60. Buying 500 grams by the tin, therefore, costs £90. Buying a 500 gram tub, however, costs just £34.80 – less than half the cost. From a monetary point of view it makes no sense to buy tins.

Secondly the quality of snuff in a tub is superior. It may come as a revelation to experience the contents of a tub for the first time – including the initial reek of ammonia which will dissipate with airing.

Thirdly the snuff keeps in good condition when stored in bulk whereas opened tins of water-based snuff won’t stay good for long.

One of the joys for snuff-takers is sampling the many varieties available in smaller quantities. However, if like me, you have a small number of snuffs that you enjoy then for all the reasons above stick to tubs

F

As a reminder, I would like to add that the largest packages contained two snuffs from the Fred Stoker company. About a kilogram of snuff in each.

P

As an afterthought: While using a proper snuffbox is fine whether you buy by the tin or tub it becomes a necessity with tubs. Having a selection of snuffboxes to suit different grades of snuff is another pleasurable aspect of graduating to tubs.

P

I wish Sharrow Mills made these available. The largest canister I ever purchased was a full 2 lb tall tin of Kendal Brown from the House of Bewlay in the days when snuff was ladled from these tins into paper packets.

N

I was just curious how well it lasted I get the savings stand point for sure I just rotate through so many different snuffs throughout the day Id be hard pressed to stick to one main snuff. But if it keeps that well I’m definitely a little more interested in sticking up. I wasn’t asking in a negative stand point by any means.

If I like it I get 250/500g tubs decant some for use to another tub and store the bigger tub till my use tub needs a refill. I try not to open my main backup reserves as much as I can, so try to keep a in use tub and a reserve tub.

I try not to keep snuffs in tins

T

500g of Grand Cairo, 250g of HDT, Old Paris and a few others. I’m a bit leery about keeping them in the plastic tubs unless you go through a fair bit of it. I transfer them to glass mason jars in the same way as pipe tobacco, it’ll keep pretty much indefinitely.

D

I was unaware of Stokers making snuff. I have something to look into now

F

Those are from around 2010. Unfortunately, the Stoker brand no longer offers snuff.

D

I saw that, stopped about 2012 according to the internet.

Have ordered several 1lb tubs of WoS, 200g tubs of McC (biggest they make) and many 500g bags from Toque. Have not had to order any tobacco for years though I’m getting dangerously low on WoS CoC and McC O&G gonna have to put in an order soon.

I just keep my bulk WoS and McC in the plastic tub and have never had any problems, the last bit in the tub is still fresh and smells of ammonia.

N

I could see getting bulk O&G for sure

H

I like sampling the smaller tins and put them in a rotation. If you really really miss it in a couple days after running out, that will define the need for a larger container. If you don’t notice it’s gone at first, but wouldn’t mind a pinch here and there, order one smaller than the original package, or maybe not at all.

The ones I really like and order in a 250g or 500gram tub, don’t get used up immediately, it will take any where from 4-5 days maybe even a week to get through a half a kilo there is no need for excess.

I like the Toque USA Whiskey and Honey, and the (F and T, High Dry Toast). The

It takes 4-7 days to get through 250 g snuff for you, do I read it right, @Huff-N-Snuff?

H

That’s 4-7 for the 500gram, half kilo.
Dude, I’m just screwing with you, I just started the dry snuff and have only finished the smaller tins.

H

I buy the 100 to 200 gram economy bags, of the blends that really like, and they last me a good while. In economy or bulk bags I have the T.rustica, T.quit, Toque USA Whiskey and Honey.
Technically I could see the bulk purchases lasting months, I probably never insufflated more than 3-4g in a day. I have an extensive sample collection of up to 30 gram tins.

You like moldy pipe tobacco? Have I got 56 grams of C&D Seersucker for you!

N

No one likes moldy pipe tobacco that is why we have learned to store it properly so it never goes moldy, its not hard.

If you are interested in buying the big tubs then Mr Snuff has just stocked up on Wilson’s tubs of 100g, 250g and 500g. We used to only order them as a special order if customers requested them. Now we have reduced our prices, we are going to see how well they sell with a view to keeping them in stock. We also keep McChrystals 100g tubs in stock, there is a delay with their orders at the moment but we have a lot expected soon.

@Kay McChrystals don’t do 100g tubs do they? Also any idea as to when all the UK prices will be updated.

K

You’re right! Sorry, it’s 200g tubs.

The prices have been updated for GN, Wilsons, Gawith, Sir Walter Scott and McChrystals

There are more in the pipeline to be updated.

It’s the first I’ve heard of Sharrow snuff being sold in 100 gram containers. Are you sure about that? These are the costs of ordering drums direct from Wilsons of Sharrow -

Sharrow snuffs by the drum all appear to cost the same, viz., 250 gr - £19.20: 500 gr - £34.80

The Viking range is sold in 500 gram drums only at the same price.

Fribourg & Treyer snuffs cost more: 250 gr £24.50 – 500 gr £42.00

V

You are right about the sizes listed on the manufacturer’s website, @PhilipS2, but resellers can repackage snuff in odd size containers, which is not unheard of. For instance, My Smoking Shop tobacconist does sell Vikings in 100 g, 200 g and 250 g tubs (besides 20-grammers and 500 g drums), whereas Toque sells some F&T snuffs in 200 g and 400 g “economy pouches” (plastic bags).

H

Hello Kay, it’s nice to meet you,
I just ordered a 500 gram tub of the F&T High Dry Toast, I can’t wait to get it, but it’s been taking a while to get to me. Mr Snuff ships so fast usually that I think this one probably h hegot snagged by U.S customs. My last 100 grammer of Toque USA whiskey and honey, stopped to visit customs for an extra 12 days. Pretty sure someone is dye-ing there narcotics brown, judging by how much my snuff sets off there bells and whistles.

A

I’m glad that I picked up 2 500g tubs of Grand Cairo and Gold Label when I did, as I see they are already sold out! Do you have a rough estimate when more Tom Buck and SP 100 500g tubs might arrive?
