Retired (largely) and an OAP. Heavy snuff user, mostly coarse grain as fin tends to congest me these days. Pipe smoker until 2005 and I have a large collection of replica clay pipes as well as hundreds of pipe bowls from the late 16th/early 17th centuries onwards, the result of many happy hours mud larking along the Thames in the 60s and 70s. I also possess a fair collection of snuff paraphernalia gathered since the mid-1960s, much of it (including my Wilsons of Sharrow book) from dear old Jim Palmer who was the long-standing snuff man at Fribourg & Treyer. He must be long dead, bless him. My favourite snuff of all time was probably Morlaix from France. One could once buy it from any French tobacconist in waxed paper parcels. Dark brown, coarse, unscented, rich and earthy and extremely pungent it was nothing like the fake Morlaix made today in the UK. Other than Otterhound (which came in dinky little hinged tins) the worst ‘snuff’ I tried was a vile, wet and green effort in a flat tin from N.Africa. Only later did I realise it was meant to be chewed (doh!). Unlike most snuffers I favour large boxes (soap dishes to some) – not only because I get through so much but because if it is regularly topped up the snuff remains fresher. (A small pile of snuff dries out much more quickly than a large pile of snuff). I also like to feel some weight in my hand or pocket.
