Average consumption 10g in 2 or 3 days about right?

Inspired by this thread I took my biggest pinch ever… it was the most enjoyable easiest to take pinch I ever took. I’m happy I did it but now I might actually need to buy replacement snuff instead of just adding to the collection. So in summation don’t be afraid to dig in and take a good hefty does of snuff if you please. DISCLAIMER: :), ;), LOL, Imho, and I hate everyone as well. But seriously,

@johndeere89 I, too, took tiny pinches until I tried a (what I now see as) normal sized pinch. was blown away that it was actually easier to take and the flavor came in a lot better as well.

Absolutely, most people soon realise that a big pinch not only does not irritate but gives a lot more flavour and pleasure. Prof Phillips Grifiths talks about this on his website and the way that he used to win bets based on getting people to take big pinches. Its counter-intuitive and maybe some people just never do it; certainly I took small pinches for a long time at the start of my snuff use. Its probably the key to the big differences in amounts that members use. I don’t think it quite holds out for HDT’s and Scotch snuffs though; a massive pinch of one of those still blows my head off.

@Sloth, I guess it was a book about the history of Fribourg & Treyer that cited an anecdote about one of the antecedent owners, who used to refill his huge snuffbox in the morning, then again during the day and bring home some more snuff in a bag in case of running out at night.

Found it! “Half an ounce per day for individual use would possibly be a very moderate allowance, and below the average. The last snuff-taker of consequence connected with the Firm filled his box twice a day, putting in over an ounce each time. In addition to this he would take away a small quantity each night, packed in tinfoil, to prevent any fear of running short. He, however, took snuff to excess and very frequently handed his snuff-box to friends.” Goerge Evans, “The Old Snuff House of Fribourg & Treyer”, page 17.

@mrorz - Thanks for the quote, it’s interesting to read little bits of snuff history.

1 oz a day is insane… that seems like you’d be taking a huge pinch every couple minutes

I think some of the variance in snuff consumption is likely due to some snuffers also getting nicotine from other sources. I may only insufflate a gram of snuff per day, but I use somewhere around 10 grams of snus per day, if not more. Oral or nasal, however, it’s all snuff. On top of that, I occasionally smoke a pipe or a cigarette. So I probably get about the same amount of nicotine daily as a heavy snuffer who uses nasal snuff exclusively.

i need to up my intake

@mroz … what date was that book written? in considering it, if my math is correct … is that 25 - 30 grams? daily? i.e. an entire 25g tin? quite the addiction, if so… can’t imagine snuffing my entire SG 25g Irish D Light in a day … wow. i probably, when exclusively snuffing(no snus or cigs), take two pea size piles per nostril every 30 minutes or so - but that gets me to 2 grams or so … i am with Pike Mopers, that example seems excessive and is probably every couple of minutes, as well as the passing around of the snuff to friends.

It is from 1921. It can be found here: http://www.archive.org/details/oldsnuffhouseoff00evaniala I encourage reading its first pages, as they contain some interesting facts and anecdotes. @snuffbrant, you are right about him being keen on passing snuffbox to friends. The next sentence, after those I posted, mentions that. Nonetheless, even if we assume that one of those two ounce went to his friends, one ounce of daily usage remains and that is a lot!

@Johndeere89 whats up mate? havent seen you in a while, how are those crops doing?

@mroz thanks for that link! searching for “snuff” in the text section of Archive.org brings up all kinds of goodies! Thank god I have an ereader!

The credits should go to @Alex. He is the one who listed this book in Snuff Literature thread (http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/13/snuff-literature). I just found enough time to read it

Thanks for the tip bigger pinches do work even if it’s counter intuitive.

@goldenboy OT- been busy man not able to get on as much as id like. Garden is just getting started this year but our newest project is raising ducks for meat. Seems to be a promising market in my area but there are some specific obstacles when processing ducks that we need to figure out. But when the time come ill just take a big fat pinch of snuff and get er done!

That book certainly is fascinating, particularly the comments about the old styles of snuff being un-reproduceable, even at the relatively early date that it was published. Interesting that the bulk of fine snuff made in the hey-day was almost all as a result of blending fine tobacco, not from making a ‘flour’ that was then scented. I wonder if in some dark attic somewhere there hangs an old frock coat with a snuff box filled with original, unrepeatable FandT?

I go through about half a pound a month, somewhere between 5-10 grams a day depending on coarseness. I know when I first started, I was worried about using too much but with some gentle re-assurance of some longtime members on here, as well as experience finding snuffs I really like, I moved past that concern and used as much as I was comfortable with. I am also an ex-smoker (just passed the year mark) and I attribute a lot to that.

now that I am jobless and essentially sitting around all day making music and waiting for the next semester of college to start, I am using probably close to 5 to 8 grams per day. I finished a 5g of Tom Buck in 2 days and that wasn’t even the only snuff I was using.

I took some big pinches of Spanish Gem and must confess… it did increase the flavor and nic hit quite a bit, with little irritation. More of a longer drawn out inhale works better for me than the quicker short sniffs I was using with the smaller pinches.
