Yes, but American snuffs are actually Scotch snuffs. John Garrett was a colonial entrepeneur, bringing the Scottish stye of snuffmaking to America. His son is Levi (classic Old testament name for a Scots Presbyterian) and grandson William E. are the ones whose names stuck. Also be mindful that the Scotch style was borrowed from the Irish (as many things were) and toasts were once common in Scotland. Also the American snuff Maccoboy owes its roots to the French West Indies (Macouba, Martinique). Red Seal was a name borrowed from the Swedish Roda Lacket. This can get as convoluted as you like or as simple as you like. I don’t care so much as find it somewhat interesting.
“Also be mindful that the Scotch style was borrowed from the Irish (as many things were) and toasts were once common in Scotland.” That’s correct. Even the name ‘Scotland’ is derived from the fierce red-haired Irish ‘Scotti (Scoti)’ who conquered and settled the west coast in the 6th and 7th centuries. Their Irish Gaelic kingdom of Dalriada also included county Antrim in Northern Ireland.
A history lesson? In MY thread? Well, whatever. Now I’m huddled in a corner, rolling back and forth in despair because I still havent been paid. I’ve whipped out my 250g jar of Dholakia White to sustain me, not the sanest idea when your work clothes are black.
@xander: A very interesting run down there. Thanks. Dave
Mountain bikes were born in America. Today 97% of those bikes are manufactured in Thaiwan. They all have a nice sticker on them which says " Designed in America". There is also a SMALL sticker, hidden away, which says “Made in Thaiwan”. My new car, which is pure FORD, was manufactured in India. People look down on these cars because it “comes from India”. But in South Africa cars are built by native Africans. I prefer a car which “comes from India”!
My favorite is on the back of my $300 iPod: “Designed in California, Assembled in China”
Like California is it’s own country now. They are unique out there. back to the Fubar, it doesn’t matter where it’s made, where it’s sold, the concern is WHEN DOES IT GET HERE?!?!?!?
