Recently I have stumbled across an ingenious snuffbox, produced by a Garage Company in Switzerland (soldiers, policemen, mountaineer as it seems - the usual suspects when talking snuff in Switzerland). It is a refurbished Zippo Petrol Lighter. The Insert has been rebuilt to make a snuff container. A button replaces the wick, with which you remove or insert your full snuff container. The hole for the flints serves as the snuff dispenser. And best of all, it opens and closes with the typical Zippo clack. They call it the Schnuppo - from Schnupftabak and Zippo. They will sell plain Schnuppos but they will also customise any one order with engravings of pictures or text, according to your requirements. In fact, they will even rebuild your own favourite Zippo, should you have quit smoking. Schnuppos are not exactly cheap, the basic models starting at 50 Swiss Francs but fully worth the money. A reall great Idea for snuffing in Style without reverting to Victorian Mannerisms or those horrible plastic cases. Their Homepage is www.schnuppo.ch and yes, they do ship overseas. I will provide pictures of mine, a 1931 first edition replica Zippo, redone as a Schnuppo. Steam Punk, perhaps? have fun, Patrick B. Ludwig
Cool.
Very interesting but the price point turns me off. I’d rather buy a proper snuff box if it’s going to cost that much.
I love all my snuffhouse.org plastic boxes And his big brother rococco. The best box in town . I suppose if someone had gifted me one I would use it. looks complicated, if the snuff come out where the flint was; The lid be full of snuff when you open it?
basement Shaman: The lid is fitted with a seal to keep the snuff in the box. csstokes: Considering that a cup of coffee or tea will easily cost you five francs in Switzerland ( which in my opinion is either criminal, absurd or both) it is reasoably priced for swiss standards. Why dont you have a go at making one yourself. A Grinder and a Hacksaw should do the trick.
@Ludwig_1954 No thanks
@Ludwig_1954 I like it, but it’s a little steep for me. Wish they had more pics on the site showing the inner workings. But then we’d probably have people making knockoffs.
I know this thread’s a little old, but I just saw it and thought I’d have a go at making one myself. All I had to do was cut away the wind guard/flint wheel with some tin-snips, grind down the edges, and gut the insides. The whole process only took about ten minutes! I left the little screw in the tube where the flint sits and plugged up the hole for the wick with a metal pin. It works really well as a tap box, my only complaint is that the hole where the wick came out is a bit small but I will probably drill it out some later.
Good evening @delphinkid Well done! Thats really all there is to it. Where does the Snuff come out? The flint hole - as in the original? If yes, how do you prevent snuff leaking into the lid when carrying? The original has the flint screw and tube removed, the hole drilled slightly larger and a piece of foam inside the lid. This tamps the snuffhole of the secouette when the lid is closed. Check my avatar photograph for details. I like your solution for the wick hole. Best regards Patrick B. Ludwig
Doesn’t appeal to me, sorry.
@Ludwig_1954 The snuff comes out through the wick hole, and I just remove the pin whenever I use it. I left the flint tube intact, and use it to store the pin whenever I tap out the snuff.
not a good design for a multi tobacco use might set your nose on fire. Think about it a second.
Wow pretty neat @Ludwig_1954. I looked at your profile picture and as a fabricator and tradesman i say easy peasy lemon squeezey. thanks for the idea. I see they make a decent product and i take that as a challenge to make one and improve in minor ways. will post you a pic when i finish…thank you for the very insightful post.
