Hi snuffhouse I’m curious how you rate your snuffs and for those of you who buy bulk, what criteria, eg score, is required to qualify for bulk. Here’s mine. 5/5 Perfect 4/5 Very good 3/5 OK 2/5 Hmm what? 1/5 Yuk For bulk purchases, anything which scores 4 or 5 out of 5 qualifies. Or do you use a different criteria altogether for buying bulk?
Similar here. 5/5 Perfect 4/5 Excellent 3/5 Good 2/5 Mediocre 1/5 Not good, but may have some redeeming quality 0/5 Truly awful I would like to have all of my 5’s in bulk and most of my 4’s. Sometimes though, they are very similar to another snuff, so I pick a favorite between them, and only get bulk of the one. For instance, I can’t find a large enough difference between Tops Mild scotch and Dental Mild Scotch, so one or the other will do in bulk but not both. Same for Garrett and Honest, though that was not hard since Garrett is easy to come by in bulk, and Honest is now defunct. Another is Toque Natural Toast and WoS IHT #22. I’ve said IHT 22 is my favorite, but I’ve also said I probably couldn’t distinguish them in a blind test. So I have TNT in bulk at present, and won’t need to buy the WoS while I still have it. There are also a few schmalzers that one or another are just as good and comparable to each other. 3’s I might or might not buy again, depending on my mood but probably only tins. 2’s I might give another chance someday. 1’s and 0’s I won’t buy again.
One of these days I want to photograph my bulk stock, though its laughable compared to some and to yours, Oscar, it must be pathetic…probably less than 15 types. I do have a ongoing wish to fill it out though…
Just the 5’s for me. I’ll do an inventory and list ‘em in this thread, it would be interesting to see others’ lists.
I rate mine as: 1) Can’t get enough 2) Like it 3) Don’t like it Those in the “can’t get enough” category are in bulk, those in the “like it” category I will keep buying more of but in small quantities, “don’t like it” won’t be bought again.

I’m nearly there on the bulk wish list, Xander. Excluding large US scotches, I’ve got 60 English bulk snuffs (450-600g). Still 6 Toques to get in 600g as well as 4 SG’s and 4 Vikings in 500g and that will be current bulk goal complete, hopefully by November. As opposed to you though, when there are competing favourites, I buy them all instead of picking one. So I’ve got all the SG KBs (orig, scented, special, Viking brown and more loosely speaking Viking menthol and viking spear), most of WoS SPs, all the SG SPs (top mill, high mill, sp scotch, Viking gold), all the toasts (except SGs which I don’t like), etc. All bases covered that way and nice to have nuances amongst fave snuffs. Will be back in the tin buying business soon, looking for more untried goodies. All the new releases from 2012 and 2013 to start with. It’s comforting not to have to worry about snuffageddon anymore. I’d have to live to very old to run out of snuff! Edit: haven’t bought any Indian or De Kralingse snuffs in bulk yet. There are two big holes in my collection I’m leaving for next year to worry about.
There are only a few snuff I would buy in bulk. I already have enough to last two life times. I currently just replace empty’s with fresh full ones. And buy the latest and greatest.
my bulks so far: Red Crest, Blue Crest Scented, SP Scotch, Crazy George, Scented KB, WoS Natural, Tom Buck, Viking Brown, Quit, SP #1 High Mill, WoS Best Dark, SG Princes Gold, Berwick Brown, WoS Princes, Elmo’s Reserve, WoS SP 100, WoS Kendal Brown, SG KB Special, Viking Dark, F&T Princes Special, F&T Princes, SG London Brown, Brunswick, Toque Natural, Cairo, Princes, 6 Photo 66, 6 Photo Kailash, 6 Photo Super Chetak
Wow Mouse that’s some stockpile of bulks - most impressive.
Just stumbled across this thread, and I seem to do things slightly differently. No number ratings for me. Primaries: These are snuffs I can use as all day snuffs, and keep going back to whatever the mood/weather/location. Examples include Berwick Brown, Jaxons SP Premium, and coarse plainer snuffs from SG which is the predominant mill in this category for me. Secondaries: These snuffs I can use frequently, but which might get a little overpowing or cloying if I tried to use them all day. A good second snuff for when you want two tins in your pocket. Examples include Old Paris, Santa Domingo, GH Ambassador. Predominant mills/brands are GH, F&T, and SG scented snuffs such as Hazlenut or Gin and Tonic. NOTE: the two categories above are what I choose my bulk from. Occasionals: These are snuffs I like the odd pinch of every now and again. It might be “refreshers” such as a minty SG, Thyme and Lemon from WoS, or Sea Breezes from GH, or it might be dessert snuffs. I quite often use an occasional pinch of a WoS or Toque snuff as a second pinch on top of a noseful of other snuff. Pomegranate, Blueberry, Rum and Blackberry, Jocks Choice would be good examples. These dessert snuffs are generally too fine for my nose of their own, but sit nicely atop an already snuffed pinch of coarse plainer snuff. These rarely get carried, and tend to just be used at home Menthols: These are kept in the tins and never used unless I am stricken with very bad congestion. I don’t particularly enjoy them, and use them very sparingly for medicinal purposes only. WoS Cherry Menthol and Ice Liquorice are two I know I have. Snuffs with just a hint of menthol would generally be in one of the other categories. Avoid: This is everything else. Toasts, fine grinds, bad scents, acrid drips, all get cast into here. The only redeeming things about these snuffs is they can be potential trade fodder, or potential insecticide. This is actually the largest category, and many get cast in here without being tried if they are known for having a fine grind or being a toast for example. So I don’t rate my snuff on how good the aroma is, but on how often I can use it. Some of the occasional snuffs I might rate higher than some of the primaries on marks out of 5 on a single pinch, but they aren’t suitable for frequent use.
My rating system has changed a little. I have started keeping a book with a scoring system in so I can remember how a snuff rated, and decide if I want to buy it again in the future, and if so in what quantities. The new system rates each snuff from 0-5 and is based on how often I could use it in a day, not how good one individual pinch is. I need the book now as I’m finding myself losing track due to how many snuffs I’ve tried. Here’s the new score system. 5* Suitable for all day use 4* Suitable for frequent use. Needs a few pinches of something else to get you through a full day though 3* Suitable for intermittent use. OK for an occasional pinch as a change of pace 2* Occasional pinch only. Once every few days at best 1* Medicinal use only. Strong menthols and suchlike 0* Avoid. Never ever buy this stuff again
I’m satisfied with a four point system: 4- Yessir! 3- Alrighty! 2- Meh. 1- Ugh! As I’m fairly new to snuff, I’m still building my bulk collection, which is all over the place as far as the types of snuff included. 6 Photo Super Kailash, Poschl Alpina, Stok Banana, Bernard’s Magic Moments Black… These, among others, are all must-haves for me, as I would be most upset if I suddenly couldn’t get them anymore. I will be satisfied when I have no less than 100 grams of each in hand, and have a ways to go in reaching that goal with several of these. I have snuffs like Honey Bee, 41 Photo White Elephant, 6 Photo Kailash, Taxi Red, Samuel Gawith Coffee, and Gotard Grape among others on Level Three, as they’re snuffs I really like, but could part with without many tears if they were suddenly no longer available. I may have between 25 and 50 grams of each of these in hand depending on how much I like them individually, but don’t feel the need to have more than that. I only need to buy some more Taxi Red and Gotard Grape, and I’ll be set here. Beyond that, I have several mentholated snuffs like Hedges L260 and Wilsons Super Menthol that I use sparingly, and have in a quantity which all put together should last me forever. All set then on Level Two. Lastly, it’s Level One or the “one and dones”, snuffs I tried on recommendation or out of curiosity that I don’t care for particularly and won’t ever buy again, like Gawith Hoggarth Sea Breezes, Viking Dark, and assorted Dusty McDusterton’s Dustboxes which I picked up early on, which contained the mummified remains of snuffs I may have liked, but are only available in craptastic tapboxes designed to ensure that they reach me as little more than dust. Most of these I keep for the purpose of trades, as I don’t even enjoy them on occasion, except for the dustboxes, which I have tossed in the trash.
For bulk lately my criteria is, is it scotch?
