Your least favored American Scotch and why

When I recently opened a fresh can, Starr Scotch Snuff by Swisher lacked almost any tobacco scent. It looks and feels like many scotches when you pinch it up. That’s where the similarity ends. I always take a lip dip of a new American, and this had almost no flavor, no sting, very low nicotine, considering what is usual for this type of snuff. In the nose - just a terrible disappointment. There’s nothing wrong with my nose, the Levi and WE Garret work fine. And Stokers, at a fraction the cost puts them to shame. I noticed in a previous thread that this snuff is also packed also in a huge sausage-like plastic tube which they call a “gullet.” Something I had never seen. There must be a following for this snuff, but I can’t image who would like it enough to buy one of those deals.

Even though I still enjoy this one, my least favorite scotch is probably Tube Rose. I expected it to be a bit smoother, but that wasn’t the case. Other than that, I love it

Haven’t tried Starr yet. So I can’t help with that one. So far I like all the Scotches I’ve had.

This may ruffle a few feathers around here, but Rooster is probably my least favorite scotch. Either that or Tube Rose, it doesn’t seem to have much flavor to it at all. I think the cardboard tube has more flavor than the snuff. Edit - Forgot the “why” on the Rooster. The smokey/bbq flavor of it is a bit too weak and just doesn’t sit right with me.

My least favorite is the very first snuff I ever tried which was Brutons (the only snuff I have ever seen sold around here). I had no prior experience with snuff before trying this so I was shocked by the awful ‘smoky, dusty, cowboy boot’ scent. Thankfully that didn’t make me give up on snuff, just made me come here on the internet to do some research where I first discovered Snuff Store and this website. I have since acquired a taste for American scotches but still can’t do Brutons. I also dislike Wild Cherry, it reminds me too much of a dip smell which makes me a tad nauseous.

Try Bruton in the mouth. To me, it’s the best regular scotch dip I have tried. Worst? That’s kinda hard to pick, as most of the sweets all seem very similar, that I have tried, except Honey Bee, which is my fave sweet. I guess my least favored has to be W.E. Garrett regular. Though it’s not bad. Keep in my mind, I only dip the scotches. Tom502

I also dislike Starr. A very unremarkable snuff that doesn’t really have a good tobacco scent at all. I don’t know what i’ll do with this near full can, maybe dip it or mix it.

Well, I seem to now have the idea of nasal snuff that I don’t care for that much, to add a touch of a straight menthol in the mix, and at least you get a decent menthol hit. But I am a menthol fan. Regarding scotch snuffs, to dip, I have been thinking of mixing a sweet with a non-sweet, which seems like it’d be good, as the sweets are usually very sweet, so it would be a less sweet snuff. Maybe add some of a sweet to the Starr. It’d be good in the mouth at least. Tom502

MATT- I was wondering the same thing. Maybe toasting it will bring up some kind of flavor. I think this can may go into the snuffburger mix as a foil for some of the more more robust twists and whatnot.

I’m new to snuffing, and so I bought the Amer. Scotch #1 sampler from Nic Rush. Of the 7 Scotch-samples received (see site for listing) my favorites are RR Mills, 3 Thistle, and Honest…in that order. The others are lacking , to my nose (as un-sophisticated as it is). The Wild Cherry and Checkerberry really belong in another catagory altogether, IMO. Of the two, I prefer the Wild Cherry. The Checkerberry is like snorting Pepto-Bismol.

Oh, that sounds appetizing LOL!

Try them in your mouth. Tom502

OK I have to say something nice about Starr Scotch. For those who like to blend snuffs for their own amusement, this Starr is bland enough to use as a carrier for tobaccos that are a bit too strong. For example Five Brothers Smoking Tobacco. Matt was good enough to send me some of his FB snuff. Excellent strong snuff it is. But it’s strong enough to make my ears ring! Mixed approximately 1:1 with Starr, rehydrated with a few drops of brandy and it’s a whole lot more civilized experience. I filled my snuffbox and have been enjoying it all morning.

Hi all! The next days I want to place a order with american snuffs. I like the bbq flavours of the english toast so I’m looking forward to it. Now the question to the dippers of nasal snuff: How many do you fill into your lip and what are the best brands for this exploration? I love Cope and Kodiak once in a while so i thinl it 's a try worth.

Any of the American Snuffs can be dipped. Nicotine Rush has samplers of the US brands and that’s probably the best way to get to try the lot without having to buy a whole can of each. If you just want to try a couple cans, I’d suggest Square as an example of a great smokey scotch, and Red Seal as a sweet with some smokiness, and plenty of power. As for filling your lip, I’d suggest less than a quarter teaspoon to start.

If you live in the US, often your local grocery or smoke shop will have the American Scotch Snuffs. That’s where I picked up Bruton and W.E. Garrett. Tom502

…local Winn Dixie stores carry a several sweet Scotchs, but I’ve only seen Dental regular Scotch. They may be able to special order if one provides the bar-code number , but I have a feeling that their warehouse inventory is pretty much set for what moves off their shelves quickly. I’ve also checked Publix, Wal-mart, Sams, gas-station/convenience stores and quite a few of the Tobacco Zone (and similar) stores with no luck. Before I became edumicated, I bought a tin of Grizzly Snuff…nasty s%*t, it is.

Publix barely sells dip let alone snuff. The Winn Dixie by me has a decent selection, about 5 or so.

@tom502: I’m pretty close to the mason-dixon line here, so no, supermarkerts here do not carry snuff. I have to go twenty miles or so south before I’m in snuff country. My tobbaconist has a handful of sweets but no scotches. @ Z_2K: shame on you! I fell in love with Checkerberry last night! But you’re right, its in its own category.

Checkerberry is a damn good snuff.
