Do you recall the first time you tried snuff, and what you thought of it? What was it? Personally, the first time I did snuff was about 5 years ago - some Lowen Prise some younger people were dabbling with at a pub I used to frequent. Others found it strange but I liked it, and bought my own soon afterwards… I didn’t have any major adverse reactions to it and found the sensation rather pleasant, but maybe thought of it more as a novelty thing, at the time, rather than something to do often. Cigarettes were the priority. Apart from some fairly brief experience back then, I’ve only become interested in snuff again more seriously in the past few weeks, really. Something made me just want to try some again, and now I’m getting well into it (although of course I’m still quite a novice!)
I bought a can of Railroad Mills plain scotch last year because it was the only american snuff the smokeshop had. The first sniff hurt like a bitch, my eyes watered, I coughed, all that good stuff. However, I kept at it and snuff has now become my main form of tobacco usage.
Gletscherprise was my first true snuff. Like you, Sloth, it was more of a novelty until I found more on the internet. I liked it okay, though. I remember the first time I craved snuff instead of a cigarette; I was driving home from work during a blizzard in Wyoming, back when my job was 3 hours from home. I pulled into a rest area for some Gawith Cola, which was terrible snuff, but it was in my pocket. I ordered Toque Natural, WoS Crumbs of Comfort, and Mac’s O&G sometime after that, and never looked back.
Hahaha!! My first was Peach Sweet, and I thought Satan himself had crawled up my nose!!! Had to post a thread to make sure that , in fact, that stuff was meant to be put up the schnoz!!!
1991 I tried snuffing Copenhagen oral snuff. That really hurt like hell. 1993 I tried some real snuffs I think Railroad Mills and Three Thistles scothces. I liked the scents but found them too painful as well. 1995 I tried some proper English snuff, G. Smith’s Lemon. It was ok, but didn’t win me over. Like Sloth it was more of a novelty to use now and then. Then something happened to me too, something in the back of my mind told me I should explore it more and see if there was something to it. Or perhaps it was Christmas Eve, 2008 when I was visited by three spirits of snufftakers past. George Washington said, “You’re a rebel! Do something different!” Queen Charlotte said, “There are lots of varietes that you can collect and sample.” She then covered her hideous mouth as she took a pinch of ethereal snuff. I must admit she was quite the dish once her hand obsurced it; and she doing something a little naughty as well. Beau Brummel said, “Its just classy and you will show that you have taste and style!” Well I don’t really remember much about that night, but soon afterwards I found myself frequenting Snuffhouse as a lurker and oggling various online snuff merchants, and pretty much everything I could find online to read on the subject. I joined the forum and began making online purchaces within a few days. Its been a great ride ever since! I LOVE SNUFF! (c) Pieter Claassen
The first snuff was McCs O&G. And a bit too much taken a bit too hard at that. Blew my head off.
My Grandfathers Shmaltzer when I was about 12. I sneezed like crazy and we laughed hard. It was a good start.
I honestly don’t remember when my first snuff was, but that’s simply because school has destroyed my brain. I do remember it was a scotch that had probably been sitting on the shelf of that smokeshop (note: not tobacconist, smoke shop; peddler of floor scraps of fine tobacco. This should have been a sign). I hated it. I had no clue what I was doing because I hadn’t found snuffhouse yet! I threw the rest of that can away and went about my cigarettes, oral tobacco, pipes and shisha. It wasn’t until a few months later that I visited the tobacconist and saw Gawith Apricot. This was a totally different experience and changed my mind. Next it was Gletscherprise and Ozona President. Then I discovered Mr. Snuff. I hardly use the Gawith Apricot or Gletscherprise any more because I’ve discovered Fribourg and Treyer…
I remember. I was 12 or 13 and I’d bought some American scotch at the local dimestore. I snuck out to a field beside our house and snorted a big pinch right into my brain! I thought I’d driven a railroad spike through my head, and was sure I’d done permanent damage. Fast forward to last June when out of nowhere I got the idea to look into snuff again. We’re talking 45 years between the first horrendous experience and the renewed interest. I found a snuffshop in Texas that was about to go out of business because of PACT, so I made a quick order of a WoS sampler and some WoS Irish High Toast No 22. Wouldn’t you know it, but the toast was the first one I tried? And I hadn’t learned anything from my first experience? But when I recovered I tried some of the other flavors with a bit more circumspection, and found a wonder. The world has been larger for me ever since, and it only gets better. This forum has been a godsend in helping me learn how to take and judge snuff. Snuff rocks and so does everyone here!
It was either McC SP or McC English Menthol. I don’t remember exactly which one but those were the first two snuffs that I bought, found them at a local tobacconist
I would get a can of Scotch Snuff once in a while, and attempt to sniff it, but had no idea what I was doing, and they ended up in the trash. This was long ago, maybe in the 80’s. I had no idea other than these little cans at the groceries. I didn’t use dip or chew then, and didn’t know these were used for that as well. It was much later, just a few years ago I tried my 1st proper nasal snuff with some idea of what it is and how to do it, and it was Jaxons Cherry Menthol, and I loved it. I should get another one now. But since that, I got into nasal snuff a lot.
My first snuff was A/P, it made my nose bleed the first time but the wonderful scent had me keep trying.
O&G for me. not knowing any better, I snorted it like one would snort an illegal substance. I sneezed but the smell was pleasant. that little can sat in a drawer for many years collecting dust.
Garretts from a grocery’s shelves back in the day 30+ years ago when you didn’t have to fetch someone with a masterkey to get at the tobacco products. I was a complete idiot about it and eventually ended up with the stuff crusted in my beard/around my nose and my hands filthy with it. I had fun though. Recently several threads on other boards have prompted me to explore it again, and I’ve acquired a number of American Scotches…the Garrett’s of my youth, of course, several others, and the Sweet Peach mentioned earlier in this thread (and which I seem to have fallen in-love with). I’ve also got some Euro varieties heading my way, which I’m quite excited to try. All in all, I’m quite excited about this new off-shoot to my tobacco “hobby”.
Mine was the Garret that was in a glass jar, They stocked it at the grocery store I worked at in the 70s. 1st time about took my head off and decided to got back to cigarettes till 1979 when a started working as a Kicthen manager in a restrerant. Started Cope then. About 02 or 03 Tried poshl president and apricot on a whim, then went back to Cope. fast forward to 2010, was tired off my lip pealing and dicided to give snuff another try. haven’t looked back. smoke cigars and pipes, but most of my nic comes from snuff now.
About 1971, I was seven years old and it was J and H Sp1.
My first snuff, 13 months ago, was some 5 year old dried out loose cigarette tobacco. Had googled the word snuff and was lucky enough to hit links about nasal snuff, read up on it, took some tobacco to the coffee grinder and give it a whirl. It was rather painful experience but the effect was for real. Been hooked since…
@hooked…lol! Gotta admire that kind of stuff! Back when I dipped Copenhagen, I used to bum cigarettes from smoker friends, crush 'em up and stick 'em in my lip when I was out of Cope…the looks I’d get were priceless! Good on ya!
Some WoS Extra Methol. Burned like hell and the menthol blew my brains out. Was addicted on the spot!
I had never heard of snuff until about a year and a half ago. I used to order a lot of snus from northerner.com and noticed they had a section for “nasal snuff” that just made me curious. After reading more I realized this was the kind of tobacco product our founding fathers used back in the day. It seemed healthier than smoking and less damaging than oral tobacco. Ordered some O&G from northerner and I liked it, then I tried a few Poschls because I read they are good for beginners, and they are. Now, I hardly ever use a menthol and I really like English toasts and American scotches. Snuff totally replaced oral tobacco for me, I quit smoking cigarettes, and now only use snuff with the occasional cigar.
From before I was born until early in college (her death) my family had a maid. She always had a “spit cup” which was an empty soup can. Apparently as a child I was fascinated by her use of the spit cup and wanted one. I knew she used snuff and I asked her about the spit cup but I never really understood what it was all about. A museum in my city had an old time grocery store which had a snuff advertisement which had a young couple and a testimony from the young man that he would never court a girl who didn’t use XXX brand snuff. About 2 years ago, I realized what she was doing and had to try it for myself as I had been wondering about it for so long. I bought a can of Dental Mild at the grocery store and the rest is history. Online I learned that nasal use was the preferred method, and it seemed the most attractive to me so I went with that. I only wish I knew which snuff that sweet lady used…
Sloth: "Others found it strange but I liked it, and bought my own soon afterwards… " simple ain’t it? WE Garrett Sweet & Mild bought from the Wall greeens : ) due to smoking ban at work + surrounding park area. Ordered from Tom shortly afterward. Rum & Blackberry, Packard, and Santo Domingo still proud of this very first online order see these aren’t beginners snuff : P
My first snuff was powdered nutmeg. My thoughts were " whoa man, I’m totally in a stuper!"
@regencybrougham That’s neat…my granny used a soup can to spit in as well!! When she she wan’t spittin the juice straight on my bee stings…that really brought back memories man!!
I first tried snuff when I was 18 when I worked in a pub, one of the regulars used to take it. I tried it a few times and liked it. At this point I had never smoked, I bought a tin of snuff, O&G, went through it then sort of forgot about it. Then I started smoking, then when I was 20 in order to cut down the fags I bought some more snuff and have been on it ever since, that will be 6 years ago in September. I did manage to stop smoking for 5 1/2 months 2 years ago just with snuff, then 1 night I went out got pissed and somebody offered me a fag and I’ve been on them on and off ever since much to my anger. Now I just smoke my pipe, but I want to cut that down too but just haven’t got the willpower to quit completely. One day I will do it but God knows when that will be lol. Stefan
I was 43 when I first tried snuff. It was W&S Irish high dry toast. I absolutely hated it! But as I was living in the US at the time, and couldnt get to have a smoke - I ended up pinching more often than stepping out for a smoke. A year later I gave up smoking completely and have been relapsing ever since *lol* I love snuff, and hope that one day I’ll realize how much I dislike smoking (tobacco that is:o)
16 it was how I survived high school since I couldn’t take smoke breaks there. Dean swift which was not so bad considering I’d never tried anything else. Put snuff on a hanky and stuff it up your nose if you ever have to do it covertly. :()
First thought: “it burns!” second thought: “not bad…” final thought and still thinking: “mooore…”
1959 - Bordeaux supplied from a relative’s snuffbox. Intermittent pinches for several years until I bought my own supply in c.1962. Once sneaked into relative’s bedroom looking for his snuffbox. Found it and generously helped myself. Relative was in bed watching me with a glare to rival the fabled Gorgon. Loved snuff then, love it now.
I made all the classic mistakes! Ordered snuff online, went to grocery store impatiently and bought a can of Peach scotch, snorted it on the way home and almost wrecked the car. Oh the burn! Destroyed my nose learning with the scotch and then my Poschl assortment arrived in the mail. Became so hopelessly clogged up with menthol rebound that I had to take a whole month to get back to square one, and the whole time I was starting cardio rehab and being monitored daily for heart problems, gave them something to puzzle over though!
I was quite young, maybe 12 or 13, and bought a tin of J&H Wilson from the newsagent at the end of my road. I took a massive pinch (nearly a quarter of the box!) and thought I was going to die… didn’t touch it again until about 4 years ago, when I learned to treat snuff (and my nose) with a bit more respect.
I was around 12, 13 too when i had my first pinch from some guy´s Gletscherprise (in Germany, i guess that many people started out with Gletscherprise because it is somehow common) and i can remember that it was awesome and horrbile at the same time Never gave up on snuff since then and until today i like my Gletscherprise once or twice a week.
I tried it around September for the first time. Me and a friend were at the tobacco shop looking at dips. I saw some odd looking cans and asked about them. He said it was nasal snuff so I had to get it. Ozona Cherry. I loved it. Never turned back from the snuffing tradition.
It was just shy of three years ago. I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with ‘old fashioned’ things and had been looking at snuff online. So, when I was in town I decided to pop in to Greens of Leeds - A fantastic little tobacconists. I had a look around, was completely enamoured by the place and decided that, as they were selling it, I might as well buy some snuff. I got F&T’s Old Paris, based on the name and packaging, and was amazed. I’ve never looked back.
