What did you want to be when you grew up? When you are at work what other job/career do you find yourself daydreaming about? I always wanted to be a tug boat captain or a river pilot.
Haha, weirdly enough… a butler I was an odd kid
I just wanted to find a big box of money.
As to your second question, bigdaddysnuff - bob’s answer
Right now I’m preparing myself for law school; currently trying to finish my BS. After high school I worked at a funeral home for a few years, first doing services then removals and cremations. When I was a kid I always wanted to be a Mortician/Funeral Director. I still wouldn’t mind going to mortuary school, maybe one day when I’m bored.
@cstokes4 That’s awesome. You are a hard worker. My wife’s cousin is a mortician and loves it. He makes a boat load of money and the weird thing is he isn’t even a creepy guy. It’s a business that is recession proof!
@BigDaddySnuff: Most of the firms down here are corporate conglomerates; most of the licensed FD’s only make ~$15 an hour. Hopefully one day the big firms will go under (no pun intended) and make way for the mom-n-pops again.
@cstokes4 I never even knew it was a corporate thing. I always thought it was a niche type business. You are correct though, he does work for a mom-n-pop establishment. I think last year he said he made 75-80k and he has only been at it for 5 years. He does everything though. Pick bodies up, embalms, reconstruction, make-up, cremation, and he is on call all the time for some reason.
Not to sound strange, but I don’t daydream about other jobs anymore. Through the most ridiculously possible route, I ended up with the dream job I never really knew I wanted. It’s an odd world.
Tug boat captain and river pilot are actually viable options for me. I’m weird though and like going away deep sea for months on end. Still a lack of available jobs has kept me on the beach for several years now, so inland waters may again be in my future. I wanted to be an emperor when I grew up. That gets less likely all the time.
@Dogwalla I don’t remember what your career is?
I WANNA BE PROFESSIONAL SNUFFER !!!..any offers…?
@Dogwalla that sounds interesting. Please share the details
I’ve always aspired to join the ranks of the idle rich, preferably by inheriting a fortune. As Oscar Wilde once said, work is the curse of the drinking classes. As it is, I have to settle for practicing law.
I was going to join a small dance group that was starting up called the chip and dale review. I had building trades in HS Tech, and after graduation I became a carpenter. Now 33years later- self employed for 26 years doing what I know. I should had join that dance troop.
@b4xter @BigDaddySnuff It’s funny how it worked out. As a young pup I started in retail sales, IT for 8 years (hit a low-level V.P. spot), moved and couldn’t find IT work, got an accounting degree (Magna Cum Laude), got hired at a local bank as the purchasing manager, two years later: BAM! I’m making TV/Radio/Print ads for the company. Been doing that for 2 1/2 years now and every day is awesome. Who knew? Plus, I have the coolest equipment in the company =D
Really don’t mind doing any job, as long as i enjoy the people i work with.
Musician/Painter/Singer/Producer/Rapper/Lord of the known universe. just about any one or any combo of those would be great.
Tom, it looks like I have a your dream job, and funny enough, I have my dream job as well. Though when I was younger I wanted a chateau with a militia and wished I had a prominent family name. Never “knew” what I would do with a small army. @Roderick, right there with ya.
I reckon I’m already doing my dream job! http://shop.eastridingminiatures.co.uk/
A pro-rock musician, which I did for 8 years but there are just too many great players around. You need to be mind bogglingly good to make it on playing alone, or great/very good and lucky. I drifted into a second career, cop, which I ended up really loving despite every single person that knew me saying I was the last person on Earth they thought could make a go of it, and now I’m working on career number three - in some ways the most challenging yet. I’ve been lucky because I’ve always loved what I do and I left school with 3 O-levels and was told by the careers guy that I should consider being a petrol pump attendant.
Zoologist
Well, I’d like to become a officer in the Marine Corps. I qualify for Intel and pilots school, but have no interest in being a pilot. Considering military police because it’s sort of a tradition in the family. After that, I’d like to go back to school, get my masters, eventually a phd and teach at a college, and own a small farm. On said farm, I want to grow food crops, and of course TOBACCO! mostly for my own personal consumption, but I’ve always thought it’d be cool to supply small tobacco companies, like some snuff producers, with good organic, or limited pesticide tobacco.
My passion for learning about other countries cultures politics and conflicts always made me want to become an ambassador, or maybe a journalist like the guy who made ‘death in gaza’ except I wouldn’t want to die halfway through my final project.
I always wanted to be a rock star. Metallicas first album kill em all fuelled my dream so I bought a guitar and learned how to play. Didn’t get to far with it but I always enjoy playing every now and then.

I wanted to be Kiss demon Gene Simmons…but my tongue was too short so I changed my mind and I became the bassist in philharmonic
I want to own a gun store/tobacco shop/ liquor store call it ATF! With a bait shop for the wife out back. Actually I’d like own my own old time type tobacco shop. Pipes and smokeless. Cigars to keep the bills paid.
Always thought I would like to be a baker.
Well my passion is Rock climbing/ Bouldering, so I would love to get paid to do it. I want to own a climbing Gym also.
@stogie I agree there is something about baking/bakers that i really respect. We have three small bakeries here in town that I like to visit on a regular basis. Bakers seem to have this cool vibe about them. Hey, it’s never to late.
@ItsMajick That’s too cool. In my opinion there aren’t enough climbing gyms. I loved going to the one here until it shut down. I would just pay the day rate and play around. What a freaking killer work out and in my opinion great exercise because you are working your mind and your body. Keep working at it brother and your dreams will come true!
@bigmick You crack me up. Very creative thinking on your part. I always thought it would be cool to have a mobile tobacco shop kind of like the lunch trucks (roach coaches). You could cruise around at night and hit all the pubs/bars and during the day hit the barbershop, offices, or wherever people who go to a tobacconist work. Low overhead and you aren’t stuck in one location.
@BigDaddySnuff…I give you first franchise rights.
@BigDaddySnuff Thanks for the vote of confidence. I really appreciate it.
@stogie I worked as a baker for a few years after highschool. Man hands down the coolest job I ever had. I often toy around with the idea of going back and wonder why I left in the first place
I spent a year working as a baker also, loved the hours–3AM to 11AM. Listening to the birds waking up in an utterly silent world is worth all the scrubbing of the muffin pans, lol.
I never wanted to work, and as a youth I fancied being either a hermit, a monk or some kind of drifter. I did manage to avoid the world of work until my early thirties, living in shared houses and squats and hustling here and there. Now I am a Psychotherapist, which suits me well.
@ItsMajik and @BigDaddySnuff I may yet become the baker. Just 2 little draw backs at this point in my life. Unfortunately the first is financial. (Hopefully will be able to do something later) second is that frankly the hours suck, You know, before the sun is up and all… But then I temporize that with the thought that I don’t really mind getting up early, and besides, then there is more time to enjoy snuff, my pipe, snuff, a good cigar, snuff, some homebrew and snuff. sounds good to me!!
I spent a lot of time with horses when I was a kid, when I wasnt doing that I was dancing. I ended up being a dance teacher, then moved 300 miles away and got a job working for the government which I hated. I then got a degree & became a Podiatrist. Fast forward many years and I am now a hippy Yoga teacher. I don’t dream of doing anything else, I am happy.
@LadySnuff Very cool. That’s kind of the direction I’m going. Not yoga, but more “that” path. Ya dig? It’s weird how we stray from our path sometimes. You go from horses, to dance, to government?, back full circle to yoga. Funny how things work.
I used to play a cowboy in Tombstone, AZ. Entertaining tourists, taking pictures with the kiddos, and got shot by the Earps and died everyday at 4pm. Coolest job ever, but didn’t pay the bills.
@Scurvy Whhhhaaaatt?! The people on this forum have done/do some of the coolest things. Very diverse. How in the world do you get a job like that? Did you used to be into theater? It’s funny how the fulfilling jobs pay the least. It would be sweet to get out of bed everyday and play a character. Seems like it would be liberating.
@BigDaddySnuff It did feel pretty free. It was like when I stepped on to the the street in costume, my other life disappeared. Before that, I worked in musical theater. I got scouted from there for the Tombstone gig and jumped on it.
@Scurvy Wow, well I hope you get back to doing that again someday if it beckons you. Great story.
@Scurvy Awesome! That would have been a blast! (no pun intended)
I’ve thought I could be a tarot reader but I keep giving readings away for free.
@bob I know that feeling. Doing Astrology and Tarot readings for friends and family COULD make me a decent living if I charged them. A couple of years ago I did some astrology readings on weekends and I made pretty decent money. It’s just a burn out when everyone wants to know, is my husband/boyfriend cheating on me, when will I get married, will I get this job, blah blah blah same thing over and over. I think people don’t grasp the bigger picture. I’m not a fortune teller, I read a snap shot of the universe as it is at this time. It’s fun to keep it real with the people I know that way I don’t lose interest. Takes major discipline to sit and read all day.
I want to own my own gun store.
Yeah that’s the first thing people ask about. It’s kind of funny when you think about it. People lack confidence in the things most of us pull off naturaly. Most people aren’t single most people have jobs. They’ll ask more interesting questions if you give them an indepth enough answer. I don’t know if it’s because of shyness or cause they think hey this can actualy show me something. Though I’d feel bad charging a set rate for one somethings all you get is confermation of what you already know. Which for people who don’t think it should work impressess but what use is that.

There is a very good Spanish film about this topic, ‘800 Bullets’(2002), which I’m sure you and anybody would like. Story is of stuntmen from spaghetti western era, who still run a wild west show on old sets in Almeria. Highly recommened!
I always wanted to be archeologist or historian, but my actual puts-food-on-the-table job is on a security company, anyway I managed to find something inbetween the two things and practice medieval & renaissance martial arts, not earning my living of it but having a lot of fun

Your story is inspiring since I wanted to be a historian or archaeologist my whole life but figured I should put some kind of political spin on it all so I could make money. Regardless it is a hard to reach area, and I have become very comfortable doing various labors. I look for room in life to insert my scholarly passions.
livin’ the dream
I wanted to be a long distance lorry driver when I was a child. Then I wanted to make a living as an artist. I ended up being an office monkey, looking at a computer all day. I’m thinking of training to be a yoga teacher now. My job is slowly killing me.
Mad scientist. Mad as in misunderstood not angry.
I am! I start college next week.
Mad scientist. Mad as in misunderstood not angry.
Yeah… Kind of have that in the DNA (not the madness; at least that what they [the voices] say Being a mad scientist isn’t as good as I imagined anyways. As a teenage I think I wanted to be the last of the famous international playboys. These days I’d like to make more/better pottery and retire to the seaside; finally write my novel (everyone has at least one in them so they say - as one of my acquaintances has demonstrated so beautifully), maybe paint some pictures, grow some vegetables in my garden like I saw my grandparents do as a child, and spend a lot of time playing nicely like I still am that child with my lovely wife. @Roderick is complete correct in his analysis - JFDI or alternately, don’t fight it - Feel it
I’ve always wanted to work in the NHS oddly. Got my degree in Medical Biosciences to work in the pathology labs but now I’m about to start training to work in operating theatres as a surgical assistant.
Musical, wether it be playing, live tech or recording tech i would be happy. unfortunately i dont really have the skills past good judgement or the money to get started (to buy software/hardware). im not much of a people person either really haha. still, if anyone wants me or wants to work with me on anything, get in touch? it will always be a slow moving side project. what a great thread to revive. odd timing too, as tonight i was in talks with a friend about music, and we started designing logos and themes and laying plans for these and music videos.
I have study Audio Engineering, but my dream was to be a private pilot preferable in a Learjet 85, i really love instruments…
Porn star. Seriously.
Porn star. Seriously.
LOL =))
Always thought I would love to run a cigar store/private club with meeting rooms, private, quiet get away where a person could just withdraw from the hustle and bustle. That dream has evolved to the point where if I has the resources I would have a BIG warehouse out back and run a mail order ‘baccy’ business. Why? I don’t know, but I would have the satisfaction of knowing I had a good supply I guess.
finding a huge box of money more like a shipping crate stuffed with money.
I think I’d like to be a hit man for certain types. Can’t mention specifics or I’d have to… well you know what I mean. Sort of modern day Robin Hood or Pied Piper leading the rats and fat cats out of the city etc. or possibly God More seriously I’d like to be part of a new world that repaired the planetary damage were are still doing and a new economic system that provided people the world over with a contented life. So God again. Definitely some sort of miracle needed.

Do it, as Yoda once said, ‘learn to let go of the things you fear to lose’ - security is an illusion, but it’s a very powerful illusion and it plays with our minds. I suspect few people on their deathbeds congratulate themselves that they stuck at a boring job that killed them spiritually, despite the pension.

occupational hazard really.
I wonder if the bills for the S.T.I. medical cost are fully covered. I would hope so.
Just go for it, whatever it is. Failing is hard but reaching middle age having never tried is harder.
The rise of the older porn stars is starting to creep me out.
I would have loved to have been a pro tennis players could have been too if I hadn’t hurt my knee as I wasn’t too bad. Other than that it was either dr, lawyer or travel writer. I now do two of those things, one I get paid for the other I do the travel part of but would love to be paid to fly all over the world getting drunk in different places, I’m a pretty handy lawyer during the week too.
Retirement
Chairman of the Department of Redundancy Department at Unobtanium University. When I was young I wanted to be a juvenile delinquent. Having met that goal I set my sights on becoming a reprobate, move up to miscreant and retire as a menace to society.
Dream career? How about not having one…
Race Car Driver
In the 60s I was preparing to be a Tennis star. Do not think they had legit pro tennis back then.
I’d love to be a wildlife biologist.
Gamekeeper
I know a few. Hard work and low pay, but rewarding. I have helped out on a couple of local shoots, great fun.
Snuff taster/tester
I always wanted to become an Ethnobotanist… life just kind of derailed me away from that academic option. Now I’m a translator… I quite enjoy it though.
Playboy mansion pool lifeguard
My goal is to be gainfully unemployed again. That’s the best. Leaves a lot of time for art and writing as well as sexing and walk taking. So once I got that figured out I will be a very happy man. Or in other words if I can find a profession that pays well and does not feel like work i.e. something I want to do anyways like writing or arting.
Cryptic crossword setter. Here, try this one: Snuff movie? Take it or leave it (7,6) Okay, okay - give me time; they do get better
I gotta say, while I certainly have crappy days when I’d rather be lying on a beach, my actual job comes pretty close to my dream job. When I was a kid, I loved reading Nat Geo, when I was at university I was an anthropology geek. And now I spend a lot of my time poking around obscure corners of a large, multicultural archipelago, talking to people about what makes them tick. Maybe it’s not everyone’s idea of a fun way to spend a life, but I like it.
I enjoy being a counselor quite a bit, but am currently burnt out in the office I’m at. I’d rather work with the juvenile offenders like I used to, just for some real money!
Pro tennis player or pro skateboarder.
I wanted to always be a doctor, but now working on my BS to become a orthopedic surgeon. So the dream still lives on… just Not looking forward to the student loans.
My dream career was working for the Foreign Service of the State Department. I came _ THIS CLOSE… _ I did my summer internship with the State Department and was a shoe in when I graduated. BUT… The government put a hiring freeze on 6 WEEKS before I graduated.
When I was young I wanted to be an archeologist, I guess Jurassic Park really played a big part in that. Then I wanted to a be a Rally car driver, though I’ve still yet to get my driving license hehe I’m more into Road Bikes and Mountain Bikes now anyways, with a lot of Longboarding thrown in for good measure. For now I’m unemployed with no revenue, after a couple careers/jobs I hated I’ve decided to make a leap of faith and I’m heading towards my true calling, R&D Pharmacologist. Starting school as soon as possible
