Hi All I’ve been snuffing for about 6 weeks and amassed about 20 snuffs as part of my experimentation phase. I find I’m not that keen on quite few and will struggle to finish some of them. I’m going to put in a new order and to try and minimise unsuitable choices I thought I’d tell you what I like and don’t. Hopefully you can then make some recommendations for my next order that have a better success rate for me. My favourite snuffs to date are: 1. FUBAR Grunt (tobacco smells like an old UK cigarette that you’ve picked out of the ash tray and re-lit - a good thing as I wanted to recreate my UK tobacco smoking days by taking up snuff). 2. Gawith Hoggarth Almond 3. McCrystals Mild Lemon Least favourite snuff FUBAR R n R - sickly sweet smell (of peaches or apricot?). On the whole, I’ve struggled to enjoy the earthier, coarser moister snuffs such as NTSU (like the nic hit), Viking Dark, Gawith Black Coffee. Will persevere, but have enough of those for quite a while! Fairly fond of my 2 F & T florals (Seville, Morlaix). Don’t like bergamot (Prins Regent). Like single scents more than mixes. For me, Toque have insufficent flavour - their Ginger is disappointing. In short, looking for: 1. Plain UK tobacco type flavours. 2. Single florals that have lots of scent but aren’t sickly sweet. 3. Single scents such as almond, cherry etc. that are strong and natural. 4. Nothing too dark, coarse or moist. Thanks in advance. Long post, well done if you read this far! Ed.
Not liking bergamot is tantamount to blasphemy 'round these parts! Kidding, but if this is so, avoid SPs. Most SPs are either heavily or moderatly scented with bergamot. Having said that, I urge you not to write them off. You like single note florals. Good. Go for Wilson’s of Sharrow and Toque. Toque’s florals are not as short lived as the others you have mentioned. Also of note, Gawith Hoggarth Wallflower and Carnation, McChrystal’s Violet. If you order more GH snuffs, get them in 25g tubs, not tap boxes (sneeze boxes); you’ll be glad of the money saved. Yes, saved not spent. Trust me. WoS Lemon Grove if you like McC Mild Lemon. (Not sure how you like lemon but dislike bergamot) Plain: Toasts, Kendal Browns (but not WoS or F&T KB) Samuel Gawith Crest series (unscented). I’m closing in on 500 snuffs sampled and still in my “experimentation phase” so keep adding new things to your roster, even some you are not sure about. hope this helps ; [-O< :-?
Dholakia range seem to be what your looking for. check out reviews at snuff central. Fubar is made by dholakia and that base is used in some of their offerings. Dholakia also makes temptation ,wow, q snuff, blast, and she. Put the snuffs you have away in glass jars ,tastes change; revisit them in a few months time ,You may find you like them or can use them as mixers for enhancing or toning down other snuff. If you still don’t enjoy then, put them up for trade. best of luck
Thanks for the advice @basement_shaman and @Xander . I think I may recall now, Xander, that you gave Prins Regent a 5 star review on Mr Snuff, so I’m obviously in your bad books! Perhaps, it will grow on me and I intend to periodically try it again as well as all the more challenging snuffs to see if my tastes change. As basement_shaman points out, this is entirely possible. In the end I manned up and bought some toasts, scotches,FUBAR Grunt 50gr and 25gr of SNAFU, as well as some small tins of single scents and fruits, such as Lemon Grove, Lemon Toast and Wilsons Rose, as well as replenishing the ones I listed above as my favourites. That should keep me going for a while.
I do indeed consider Prins Regent a top tier snuff. However, I can’t expect everyone to like it. Taste is subjectve. What I’m not sure of is was it actually the bergamot you didn’t like. It could also have been old dried out stock. was it the Virginia base? Or the old rope nature of that snuff, which I think owes to some brandy, or some other spirit?
The easiest test is to smell a fresh teabag of Earl Grey, which is scented only with bergamot - unless you have some adulterated/bastardized(wink-wink) Earl Grey with something else added. There are other scents added to most of the sp’s too, lavender maybe, I forget. I’d suggest trying a few sp’s, just to see if it’s really all of the sp’s you dislike.
Okay, interesting @Xander. Now I’m beginning to question now whether I really know what bergamot smells like. I’d understood that the main scent in Prins Regent was bergamot and there’s certainly a unique smell to it. Could be everything blended together and not the bergamot. @Mr_) I certainly like the smell of Earl Grey tea bags.
