going to make an order soon, so thought I’d ask?
Do you like IPA kind of beers?
LOL outside of most light beers, I just love beer. So I take that to be a plus?
I’d say there’s a moderate level of hops in it. But some folks think its fairly hoppy. To me nowhere neer a good IPA, I’d say the hops don’t jump out at you like a hoppy IPA will. However I’m not complaining about the overall quality, I’d deem it decent, prob worth a try.
I would absolutely recommend McCrystal’s Stammheimer Hopfen Schnupf. McCrystal’s makes good snuff.
It’s definitely seems one of McChrysals more popular offerings, at least around here. I just can’t personally and honestly call it very hoppy, at least my tin was more “tobacco+maltiness with a touch of hops”. Just my personal tasting notes.
To me hops is easily recognizable and definitely what comes first to my nose. So my point is, if you like IPA, you can’t dislike this snuff. Besides that, grind, texture and moisture are just like McCrystal’s SP.
I find it extremely hoppy. I need to get this one in bulk!
Huh, maybe my tin was too old, that’s all I can think of to explain it, but the cellophane was intact. Maybe I’ll order another tin for research purposes!
Could be. I still want to try that other Hops one, from Haltauer Hopfengold. It seems to have disappeard from ther website, though. http://www.hopfengold.de/bezug.htm Can somone in Germany who is close find out if they still make it?
This is one unique snuff and deserves a try. It is wonderfully crafted and top quality.
I can recommend it as well. It’s almost like a twist on classic SPs. Its really beyond a comprehensive explanation though.
Yes yes yes oh yes.
I too got quite a lot of maltiness when I took Hopfen, and found I liked it more when its strength had gone down over a few months. It was nice to try, but I probably won’t order it again, although I do like McCrystals’s other offerings.
Yeah, mostly malty was my batch. Must do the socially responsible thing and buy some more to compare. At least one more time… Hope I like it, like most of you guys, still must keep up the search for some good hop oil or extract to experiment with.
Roderick, if you see this, have you ever tried doing a beerish snuff?
I was a hophead before hopheads were cool. This stuff does nothing for me, but YMMV.
@Mr.O I don’t know entirely the outcome, but Roderick was working on a porter snuff years ago. Apparantly it never got past the test stages, I think the scent wasn’t pronounced enough. I never tried a sample though. One can hope that the project is merely on the back burner rather than cancelled. There is a very good beer snuff house blend from Snuffstore called Blender’s Bundle. However, its usually only avalable intermittently and in limited quantities. When it is, I try to grab up a few to hold on to. Its got to be kept absolutley airtight though, as it gets a bad scent when it gets stale.
Yes I’d like to see that come to fruition(sp?)!
It’s good to hear a good review about the BB, I’ve got some in a bag that’s beyond old, so I really don’t know what it’s supposed to smell like.
Taken on its own, McC Hops is a mild bitter sweet floral citrus snuff (strangely enough). Frankly not much to write home about. However taken with a couple of jars of your favorite IPA…nothing can touch it. It is the best pairing of snuff/alcohol I have ever come across.
In that scenario, especially in an outdoor beer garden, sun beating down on your face, cool breeze coming of the canal, slow boats chugging by, faint whiff of bbq, great mixed company…nothing beats Stanheimmer Hopfen Schnupf.
Snout did a great review…
This snuff went rapidly from “meh” to “Mmmmm” to “Must have” for me. My first instinct was that it was a too-dry and over-dusty version of McChrystal’s SP, but as I accustomed myself to the grind, I began to appreciate the subtlety of the blend. Stammheimer is effectively an SP, with a citrussy freshness which underpins the blend and holds the other flavours together. The hops are not overpowering, but they bring a definite hint of beer to the mixture, even (and this may sound odd) the delicious refreshing fizz of a cold lager. The beer in question would be something like a Hoegaarden, or other white beer, with a couple of slices of lemon. Someone else mentioned a skunky aroma - I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same thing, but there’s a definite touch of the “special” scent of Amsterdam in there as well (I believe that hops are related to that other controversial herb). This stuff may have a German label, but it’s so Dutch, they should call it Cees. It’s replaced all the other McChrystal snuffs in my usual rotation, and is strongly recommended to anyone who enjoys a fine, powdery and refreshing take on an SP type snuff. An all-day, all year round classic.
