I currently have my snuffs stored in a cool room inside a shoe box. They all seem fine but I wondered how long they will stray fresh. Does anyone know if a humidor might help prolong their life? They are quite reasonable on Ebay.
I don’t know and haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve had the same thought. Some folks use an airtight container for pet food with a humifactant (not a real word, but I don’t know what the real word for that is) in it, which must be about the same thing, so I’d say it should be a good idea. Maybe someone who actually knows something will answer your question.
The single most important factor about storing snuff is that its kept in airtight conditions, anything else is, really, secondary. You may get good results with a humidor, storing in a fridge/freezer etc, and many people do - but nothing a plain air tight jar won’t do, even a washed out peanut butter jar if the seals good. I have 30 plus years old snuff as fresh as the day I bought it that has just been kept in plain glass jars.
The only form of tobacco that really needs a humidor are cigars. They will lose both flavor and shape if not stored under controlled humidity. For any other type, Snuffster’s advice is spot on – an airtight container is all you need.
I use a small humidor (about 50ct) for my snuffs that don’t come in the most airtight packaging. While airtight is the ideal, if you’re like me and you are constantly getting into your snuff collection then the added security of a humidor is nice. Every time you open your snuff tins or your airtight container holding them you are releasing all of the humidity in the surrounding air. Once you close the lid the humidity will reestablish itself to an equilibrium over the next few hours/days. Each time you do this you are losing moisture and slowing drying out your tobacco. A humidor with a properly functioning humidifier will return the rH to its ideal levels after you close the lid. This will keep your snuffs fresher longer. But it’s really only worth the effort if you keep a lot of poorly packaged snuffs and you don’t go through them quickly. I find that I gravitate towards better packaged snuffs primarily so I don’t have to worry about it as much.
Thanks @Mr. Nose I think a humidor would be perfect for me. I’m constantly dipping into an assortment of snuffs and they end up drying out before I even finish them.
Put the cans in a jar.
