In the past when I was a newbie to snuff. I had tried WoS chocolate orange and coffee cream, found them dry and bland’.
After trying a large range of snuffs and never really deciding on that all day snuff.I revisited my stash. Only to fine, my nose has developed more concerning sense of scents. These two snuff are as labeled.
Now that all WoS are on special, a desire arisen to stock my cellar with WoS. And want to know, What is your favorite? I could read threw hundred of reviews that compare to other snuff I never tried , or someone saying like a spring rain walking threw the garden Yea that what I do when it’s raining. I want veteran snuff users to share here. Then I can make a new shopping list. Thanks
I’m not a veteran snuffer by any means but I’ve experienced a fair few WoS snuffs, my response in that thread is the same:
Crumbs of comfort - A lovely spearmint snuff. Similar to menthol, but with flavour whereas as menthol is more of a medicated smell/feeling.
Royal George - Like a dessert snuff. It has a cake like flavour, most reminiscent of a strong sponge cake. Very unique flavour.
Strawberry - More like strawberry milkshake but that’s even better for me.
Grand Cairo - A warm, mild SP
and I would also add Cinnamon, I didn’t like it at first, but now it’s up there with the others. Very Christmassy feel to it too. The only one so far I didn’t like was Brunswick. It’s too moist to pinch, it just rolls down your nose, it’s jet black, and the smell reminds me of essential oils you burn. I bought it from a local tobacco shop, got home, tried it before going back out and the whole time I was out I felt like running away from my own nose it’s was like an old perfumed sock. It’s not been so bad since but still not a fave. But all the reasons I don’t like it is probably the reasons some do. I guess I go for sweeter snuffs.
Best Dark Gold Label Grand Cairo SP100 These are the snuffs that dreams are made of…top drawer classics. Many people love Tom Buck/Queens Extra Strong, but I’ve never found any in stock at my local B&M and haven’t ordered any, so have yet to try it. For fruity snuffs, Wilsons’ Apple and Strawberry are both excellent. Crumbs of Comfort is a classic too. Lovely snuff.
I think everyone will recommend GC despite the fact that it seems to be constantly changing. The lemony SP with hints of lavender and spice with a firm nic kick is what i think its best known as and it is excellent.I also 2nd Royal George especially as a bedtime snuff. I think Best Dark really lives up to its name if you’re at all interested in their darker coarser range. Another good sweet but not overly sweet snuff is Strasbourg and if you want something like Strasbourg with more pronounced citrusy floral (but not soapy) flavor I recommend Morlaix. If you really love bergamot Tom Buck or Queen’s (they’re the same thing) is a must have. The apple from what I recall is like a granny smith and quite enjoyable. Really I don’t think you can go wrong with WoS although I too didn’t really enjoy Brunswick. If you want a nice leathery tobacco flavor rounded outt with hints of other common WoS flavors made from Golden Virginia (which is pretty strong tobacco, rustica if I’m not mistaken) Gold Label is great. The flavor really grew on me. CoC is pretty good but you have to like mintyness which some people don’t like in snuff. It makes a pretty good mixer too.
There are too many non-meds too decide, but prob TB/QES, Royal George, or a bunch of new faves.
As I understand, Burley, Carolina, VA (and hybrids etc.) are all different (varieties/subspecies?) of N tabacum(sp?). Rustica is another species of tobacco, I think there are 4/5 diff species of tobacco.
@Mr.O Wikipedia lists over seventy nicotiana species and a few man-made hybrids to boot. Each variety of N. tobacum also will obtain certain characteristics due to differences in climates and soils.
Ok, I knew about multitudes of varieties, but 70+ species is suprising. As I figure all varieties of tobacco are nicotania, but are all members of genus nicotania actually tobacco? Are all actually consumable? You gave me something to research!
Sherry. I bought a half pound jar on a whim a couple of weeks ago - I have not used anything since. I was very surprised that I like it so much and I don’t buy a whole lot of snuff because I have lots of the few types I use the most often, and this was a very nice find. I can’t see me ever getting fed up of this, it is without a doubt in the top 5 of all the products I have ever tried in 30 plus years.
SM blue is a favorite. Royal George is a must. Crumb of Comfort. Blackberry and Rum is vastly under-rated. The Rose of Sharrow is a must try it works wonders with their flour.
I recently tried the Strawberry and I really feel that it’s under-appreciated. Strawberry is my favorite fruit and I’ve found that only Wilson’s makes one that is actually good. I’m really hoping that Toque comes out with one soon because they are very good at fruit flavored snuffs.
As for the one I couldn’t live without:
Apricot
Any of their SPs
Camphor & Mild is awesome, but unfortunately, it loses its muster quite rapidly, so I typically don’t get more that 10g at a time.
Strawberry
Special mention should be made of Ice Liquorice-my first ever snuff, and still one I like to revisit. A lightly mentholated snuff with a really tasty liquorice topnote. Much more subtle than you’d think-it would have been easy for WoS to overdo it with I’ll, but their experience and restraint are obvious in this blend. Superb.
One of my favorite snuffs that receives nary a mention, and which I think may be unfortunately overlooked is WoS Sandalwood. If you like Grand Cairo, Gold Label or Best Dark, give this fantastic snuff a go!
