WoS Jockey Club

S

I have to say I have tried most of the WoS’s line and this is by far one of my favorite types. A very smooth snuff with a very long lasting floral scent. For some, it may be cloying, but for me, a fan of well done florals I quite adore this snuff. very finely ground, almost like dust and quite smooth on the fingertips. the scent, a combination of what all ingredients, i can’t say - i only love it. the scent is very long lasting too. so much so that i have to wait quite a while to snuff another type or simply snuff more. is there a history behind jockey club? can someone tell me?

X

There is some history. Somone posted once about 6-10 months ago. Probably PhilipS. I’m not sure what’s in it. Keep in mind its a non-proprietary name so Gawith Hoggarth have one, (and maybe Frederick Tranter?) and they could be a bit different.

D

i enjoyed the flavour of jockey club however i would enjoy it more if it was slightly more subtle as it can be overpowering.

S

@true that Xander. I’ll have to try the others. But does F &T have a jockey club? never heard of it.

X

No, F&T does not.

S

Just got a tin of Wilsons of Sharrow’s Jockey Club today. I’m not used to ‘floral’ snuff, but scent is certainly long lasting, and quite pleasant.

T

F&T kendal brown is similar please note I say similar and not the same to jockey club.

B

I do love wos Jockey Club, nice strong floral.

P

The only floral I like, though I haven’t tried the SG florals yet.

D

wos jockey club a great snuff but i’m a bad bad man as i like to mix the wos jockey club with wos high dry toast No22 in a 30/70 mix yep it hits hard, but a great mix try it…

A

I only use JC as a flavouring for blends, just a touch in a plain SP is nice but its a little bit sickly otherwise.

T

what would you label F&T Morocco? I like it alot…

A

Flavoured as it is with Geranium I would call it a floral. The only floral snuffs I use with any regularity are Rose or Carnation, Toque or WoS versions. Rose is another fantastic ‘seasoning’ snuff. In my snuffbox at the moment is a mixture of Rose, HDT and Quit. Powerful and delicious. Talking of FandT; its a sad fact we have no idea what the originals were like. Even when Fribourgs was still a company, as opposed to a WoS brand, they admitted the originals were lost to history. I just wonder if in some attic somewhere there is a last bottle waiting to be found…

P

Due to this thread I ordered 10 gs from Mr Snuff with some other things. This is better when aired properly to yield its over the top scent. The forals, including some F&Ts seemed much more floral years ago I when I tried them, but this might be just anno domisnout.

P

The fanciful association between the Jockey Club and the snuff bearing the name is described by the perfumer A. Ellis in ‘Essence of Beauty’. The passage is quoted on page 43 of ‘Snuff Yesterday and Today’ by C.W Shepherd.

T

The other day I was in a hurry and forgot my various smashboxes when I left the house. Thankfully there was some Jockey Club and L260 in my desk draw at work. I mixed them together, 50:50. 'Twas unusual, but quite pleasant, and something I would actually repeat. I find both of them a bit overpowering when taken straight.

S

@TheBoggart - That could certainly be an interesting mix, I’ll give that a go sometime. I’m fairly new to mixing (hence my thread a couple of months ago asking about it) but I like both Jockey Club and Hedges L260, so together they could form a nice nasal adventure or something. I’ve mixed Hedges with others but haven’t mixed JC with anything yet.

P

Am I wrong in suggesting that Poeschl’s Packard Club is their own version of Jockey Club - and hence akin to a 50:50 JC/L260 mixture?

X

Packard’s Club is more bergamot or lemon scented, and already mentholated. Jockey Club is very floral.

P

WoS Jockey Club is one of the few snuffs I’ve tried that really didn’t suit me. Yes, it’s abundantly floral, but there’s no harmony between the various ingredients – it’s one big discordant clash, IMO.

G

JC was always sold as a ‘ladies snuff’ it being perfumed and all that…

C

I could be mistaken, but I think you all were just called a bunch of sissies…

G

No, not at all, just because the ladies preferred it…

S

And remember gillybean129 is a lady, and worked at t’ other mill.

S

Haha, well if it was originally targeted at female consumers it doesn’t matter to me, really. Even if Jockey Club was sold in a bright pink tin with a dancing bunny rabbit on the front, I still like it anyway!

S

I’m guessing that when some of these floral and heavy scented recipes were developed, it was a different era when sanitation and unpleasant odors were common. I could see the need for an odor masking snuff in the streets of 17th century cities or heavy livestock areas, etc… Daily bathing wasn’t always practiced either in the “good old days”. Or maybe people just really liked flowers.

P

Yes, Jockey Club by t’other Wilsons (or Jockey Club Perfume to give it its full name) was said to be a ladies snuff. Being male I found it ghastly. Anyway, this is what the blue booklet says: “A delicately scented snuff, the most popular of our scented range, particularly popular with the ladies. Smooth and satisfying, the flavour is controlled” J&H made some very good snuffs, but this wasn’t one of them. Can’t speak from experience, of course, but one imagines that the perfume was on a par with the acrid scent of some 1970s northern tart working the red-light district of Leeds.

G

Glad you said Leeds and not Sheffield…

W

Pmsl @PhillipS I guess it wasn’t your cup of tea then? Stefan

S

@PhillipS, I will swap my tin of Jockey Club for a medallion, so I can be tough and manly like you…

P

"I will swap my tin of Jockey Club for a medallion, so I can be tough and manly like you… " To be really manly and attract ladies like bees to honey requires more than one medallion. You need three at least - plus lots of chest hair, a gaudy silk shirt, flared trousers, fake tobacco juice tan, phoney Italian accent, scouser wig and tash, gucci shoes and a flair for the tango. It also helps if you call yourself something like Tony Mancini instead of Sloth. : )

T

ha Don’t forget to wear your snuff-stache proudly!

P

@PhilipS: As an American Anglophile-in-training, I’m familiar with the definition of a scouser, but could you please provide an example of a “scouser wig”? Much obliged.

GH Jockey Club is quite different from WoS. Anyone who likes the Wilson’s should try the GH, all I can say is it’s a differnt scent, similar not the same, and really quite wonderful. It has a good burn to it and is long lasting.

H

WoS Jockey’s Club is lovely. A sharp, clean scent, which I would describe as highly perfumed rather than floral as it’s not really a flowery scent at all. My tastes mostly seem to be running to Samuel Gawith these days, but I have to say their Jockey Club, while good and with a less fine grind (which I prefer) isn’t as good as Wilson’s. Previously to discovering the joys of 6 Photo Kailash, WoS Jockey Club was my bedtime snuff, as I’m one of those people whose nose blocks up when it’s time to go to sleep (a darkness allergy, perhaps, lol), and JC kept it open and clear.

S

Wow, this thread, talk about a blast from the past! LoL

All informative stuff for new snuff users, Jack! But worried about the sort of club all these highly perfumed jockeys might belong to, though…

J

But worried about the sort of club all these highly perfumed jockeys might belong to, though…

It’s a very fine, civilised club. More people should join it!

M

I agree, it’s a damn good snuff (IMHO).

A

Just dug into this one for the second time last night. Got a 5g in a sampler pack back this spring from Mr Snuff. I was completely turned off at the time and put it back in storage with the tape on. Going through my WoS again, and now having a much greater appreciation for them and the delicate differences between what at first seemed awfully similar snuffs, I’m really impressed by the Jockey Club. It’s of a similar vein as F&T(WoS’ premium brand)'s Seville or Macouba (neither of which I’ve really taken to yet). But in my humble and still-much-to-learn opinion of aromas my taste finds Jockey Club superior. There is a Strong abundance of aroma. Pushing the envelope in strength of smell. The composition of aromas I feel is well blended, not clashing. I find the scent very similar to premium brand soap. When I started snuff that description and enjoyment I thought would be an absurd combination But I find it very pleasant and was thinking in bed last night that I’m going to enjoy the scents and subtle differences of scented soaps from here on, Ha! The grind I’m inclined to say is finer than most other WoS but the low moisture content could be at play. The aroma is bold upfront but softly shades into a long lasting subtlety, a contradiction I find in WoS Royal George too. It’s a really pleasant snuff. If you are open to floral snuffs it’s worth a try. And I’m enjoying the 5g tin not a 25g so it may be even better in that form. It makes me happy I’ll regret it if I forget to add another tin to my next snuff order

V

@ar47 Sounds promising. I haven’t tried Macouba and WoS JC, but enjoyed Seville. F&T French Carotte doesn’t lack soapiness, too. It’s like a mix of Bordeaux and Seville, both colour and scent-wise. Grind and moisture is akin to Bordeaux.

I wonder what colour and grind is WoS Jockey Club? Same as Seville?

A

Hey @volunge here’s a picture of the two, gently spooned out.  Card stock is white but the light is warm

20180907_101458

JC lacks the bright pungent “baby powder” component of Seville and the musky component of F&T Macouba.

They all smell to me a bit like a girl’s bathroom. Seville smells like a 7 month old’s bathroom. JC smells like a 37 year old’s bathroom.  Macouba smells like an 87 year old’s bathroom.  I’ll take the middle one thank you

V

Thanks @ar47! I’m adding JC in my ‘must-try’ list. Love that darker WoS base.

A

The aroma has some serious staying power. Blow your nose a few hours later and Hey, Jockey Club! For what it’s worth my wife says she hates this snuff, but she also doesn’t like Rows of Sharrow. I really enjoy both the RoS and the WoS JC and I know @volunge you appreciate the rose too.

K

@ar47, I agree that Jockey Club and F&T Macouba are very similar. I think Jockey Club has the stronger sent of flowers and it last in the nose longer than Macouba. My husband’s first description was it smelled like a men’s locker room after everyone put on cologne. He doesn’t care for it, but I like the floral smell that comes later.

A

@KayeC do you have Toque *USA* ( USA and non USA are quite different) Whiskey and Honey? My latest discovery is ~1:1 Toque USA W&H : WoS Jockey Club and whoooooeie!

V

Just tried JC and… fell in love at first pinch

Now I terribly regret ordering the smallest tin, definitely will shoot for 25 g next time!

There’s something very, very familiar in JC. Rose, neroli, sandal, musk? Really spicy this one! And yes, reminds both Seville and Rose of Sharrow. I even got a small flashback of Poschl Packard’s Club here as well. Thanks for recommending this, @ar47! JC makes me happy, too.

A

@volunge I’m happy you’re happy I similarly need to pick up a larger tin - I’ve been saving what little I have left for a rainy day and keep forgetting to order more. Thanks for bringing it top of mind. You mentioned Packard’s Club, do you have some on hand? I find they compliment each other very well. Throw some Jaxon Club Special in there and you have Club Mix! (layered or mixed in this order/proportion) 3:2:1 Poschl:Jaxon:WoS. Even @SammyD13 was a fan, and he’s a snuffing man’s man!
