So as the topic says, I am afraid I have ruined some of my F&T snuffs. You see, I had kept small amounts of each snuff in little plastic smash boxes labeled accordingly but fearing that they would soon dry out, I put the 2-3 grams back into their respective aluminum tins. It’s been about a week now and I haven’t touched any of them until today but it seems that my tins have started to dry out. I see it a lot with my Princes Special and Old Paris. Is there any way to bring back a little moisture to these snuffs?
first, I cant really see how that would ruin them, I’ve done the exact same thing with some American Scotches (had them all relocated to little 2 oz clear bottles, then realizing even with a little white label on each it was just too hard for me to tell whats what plus with that many glass jars sitting around its an accident waiting to happen, and I put them back in their original containers). They still seem okay (even if a bit more ‘fluffier’ for all the moving they did). They were/are the typical scotch sized for the most part, 1.15 oz. I also did the same thing with a bunchof 25g toques I had in their orignal 25g toque tins (into the glass jars with the screw top lids they went, then back out again to their tins) I’m just a little indecisive at times (heh). All seems okay, but if you really think you’ve hurt them, maybe try the moisture restoring technique I’ve seen discussed all over this forum (its about putting your open snuff in its container in a bigger container with water at the bottom and sealing the whole bigger container up and leaving this sit for a while, like a few days I guess, to rehydrate them – you’d have to search and see if you can find the threads about this or somebody will have to come here and tell you if there’s more details to it, I’ve never done it) EDITED to add – another of the snuffs that got caught up in my big moving quest was actually my F&T High Dry Toast #22 (in its little metal can that’s just a little bit smaller than a scotch can), and it also still seems okay. From what I have read, the biggest risk to snuffs is really lots of opening and closing (which I’ve also been guilty of) and my game plan from here on out is to move 5g to 10g of snuff to either an empty 5g smashbox, an empy 10g toque tin, or this one former McChrystal’s S’Nuff tin I have (It was an odd amount as a S’Nuff tin but looks like it would hold close to 5g if filled completely full, which I won’t do since its my carry-all/mixer tin for using snuff out of, makes a good cheapo ‘snuff box’ then for me I guess). The idea is to have different degrees of storage and this is where all those (fifty of them in all I really went overboard on buying these) 2 oz jars glass jars with screwtops will come in handy… you get a huge amount like the 250 or 450 or 2lbs etc… relocate SOME to a 2 oz jar like I have here, then from there you take your little daily useage in your smashbox/snuffbox’s worth that way you’re opening up stuff, the bigger the storage the less frequently you’re opening. This is my plan and I’m saving those 2 oz jars now for things that I have a huge amount of and don’t have already their own approximatley 2oz containers, or things I’ve just completely made up (like when I grind up this or that tobacco product trying to make my own snuff), to then do the littler daily useage pulls from. That’s the plan anyway (I need to empty out/use up more small tins and smashboxes worth of various things first) EDITING again, also, look here (another rather helpful link somebody else posted elsewhere I still had up on my tabs)
