I live in Pennsylvania and this cold weather is hell on my nostrils. Any advice on how I can avoid those chapped nostrils and keep on snuffing rather then going for Dip. I love taking snuff but the constant irritation is getting painful in the cold. Could it be the dry snuff I am taking? My daily is white elephant with whatever menthol I find in my bag to mix it with. I just ordered dh dark and viking dark and a few other engine snuffs. Hoping some moisture will help for the last 2 miserable months of winter. Does anyone else experience this or am I just being a woose.

Are you familiar with Ayr nasal spray? They make an aloe vera gel for chapped nostrils that works quite well.

I second mrjohns regarding a nasal spray and would look at some sort of moisturizer for the exterior of your nose. I started using nasal spray and a moisturizer and haven’t had issues since. If it matters I use mentholated snuffs and it seems to go well with the cold weather.

I use Vaseline petrolium jelly.

As do I when it gets really cold. Haven’t needed to this winter so far though. Just a smear before bed and as required during the day.

Aloe? Be careful mate. "snuff spiced with dried aloe has been reported to cause upper jaw malignancies in the Bantu tribes. " Snuff-induced malignancy of the nasal vestibule: a case report - PubMed

I don´t know the original source but I saw in the page of Professor Phillips Griffiths (http://www.snuffbox.org.uk/) an small article regarding health hazards and snuff, in it included the same example about the Bantu tribes, concretely: "the high incidence of upper jaw neoplasms among Bantu in the Transvaal might possibly be explained by their widespread use of snuff containing charred aloe stems. " So it leads me to think that the “charred” might be the cause for that not the aloe, btw charred o dried seems to be the key. Sorry for the off topic.

Aloe gel. Not charred aloe.

I think the problem comes from moisture that collects at the rim of the nose when the nose runs or when you blow your nose ( - in this kind of weather). And I’ve heard that White Elephant doesn’t cause this running. So that might be your answer as far as best snuff for outdoors work in the winter in Pennsylvania. Edit: Oops, I see WE was the snuff you said you used. So I don’t know then. Maybe quit mixing it out with other snuff? Menthols definitely run a lot.

This sounds ridiculous but… I use my wife’s nipple cream (Lansinoh). We had a baby a few months ago. I have recommended this to a lot of people. It’s like a miracle cream for noses, lips and sores/cuts in general. Give it a try.

I wish I had something magic that would let me use snuff while I’m snowboarding, but invariably, it makes a mess. Just no way to stop the running in the really cold windy weather. Rather than dip, I use snus. It’s allegedly safer than dip, and you don’t have to spit. The portions (pouches) also make it easier to grab with gloves on. But snowboarding is really the only time I use snus these days.
