I just carved these spoons and wondered if anyone knows of wooden snuff spoons in history. Or, has anyone else caved a snuff spoon? I did these in walnut and finished them with walnut oil. They take about 4 to 5 hours to make. If anyone has other wooden snuff spoons I would love to see a picture. Note: They are approx. 3 3/8 inches long.
This is a coconut shell spoon from a Hawaiian style salt and pepper set. It is mostly flat but for the gentle longitude curve. I like the control of the spatula like flatness. Your spoons are looking good. Can you add a reference of size for us?
This is a better photo with a scale to get an idea of the size.
Those are huge! Have you seen the bone snuff spoons that come with snuff bottles? Those are pretty cool. Your spoons would make nice pendants. I made a spoon out of a licorice stick but the wood is not dense enough and I have no skills. Looks like your off to a good start yourself.
Very nice work, Ive not seen wood used apart from home made ones. I use a tiny pewter one but not for snuffing, just for filling up my snuff box. Why don’t you carve a few more and get them on snuffstore like Patrick and his boxes? The one on the right reminds me of an old fasioned snuff rasp from when the old boys use to grind their own from a ‘carotte’ as they needed it.
How much do you think people would pay for such a thing? This would be a new line for Jarhog_Studio. The only other art creations I have sold are audio equipment. It would be cool to be known for carving too.
Well, its work intensive clearly, and the craftmanship is self evident. I don’t see why they should go for less than one of Pat’s boxes? I think they retail over here for about £15, although you get them a lot cheaper if you buy direct from him. Whilst I would definitely buy a wodden one, could you do them in metal as well? That would suit my own tastes more. The real buzz for me though comes from a new snuff box, how about putting your obvious skills to work in that direction? Whatever, best of luck with it.
I do have a set of tools to do silver work that I inherited. At this time they are in storage and I don’t have a good place to work. I did do a little of that with my great uncle who made indian jewelery. That has been 30+ years ago. I may try that in the future but I am doing the wood for now.
Here are the three I have made so far…
Mo spoons…
lovely
2 more today, I’m trying to work something out with Mr. Snuff to get them on his site…

That makes two of us, Scurvy! SnuffSniffer makes some fine looking spoons.
@WVDAVE Yessir! I’ve got three now and I love 'em. Great one-of-a-kind collectors pieces to any spoon/snuff box collection.
Hmm… I have a mess of spoons but none that are really fancy.
A couple new creations…
@SnuffSniffer, I really like that black one. The “twist” at the spoon end is just cool as heck. Good Job.
