Hi all, Just picked up the new Wilsons Ylang Ylang… Ylang Ylang is a popular scent, not in snuff, but in general… So I’ve smelled it before. But this is the first time I’ve had it ‘in my nose’ literally. I’m getting licorice/anis up front, plus some citrus, and a floral… I’m speculating lavender. Research tells me it’s it’s own flower, but in my nose… I’m enjoying it… it’s not an all-dayer for me, but it’s nice in the evenings. Any other takes on what makes Ylang Ylang, well, Ylang Ylang? At least in the Wilsons’ version? Am I missing scents that you detect? Is it just the ‘flower of flowers’ masquerading as the scents that I did detect?

I haven’t heard much about this one so I’m excited to read your comments. I have a tin of it in transit right now. I will post some input after it arrives.

Ylang ylang is a specific flower, cananga odorata var. genuina (it says on the essential oil bottle I have here). I guess they’re using the essential oil, pure, so that the name on the tin is a true reflection of the scent. Taking a pinch, it seems quite authentic, soapy, definitely floral and very complex. I don’t see any good reason to think it’s anything but what it says on the tin, the oil is common enough and cheap enough. If I find out any different, I’ll be very disappointed. It’s a shame that Wilsons of Sharrow dont have a presence on this forum to help us out, what with all the business that we do with them.

I was very excited about this one, having spent a semester in Costa Rica where Ylang Ylang trees grow wild. The scent of Ylang Ylang blossoms is one of my all time favorite smells and has so many awesome memories/associations for me. It is a very subtle and elusive smell for me and though lovely smelling in the tin it turns weirdly tangy in the nose and is gone within a few minutes. I also have Qsnuff jasmine which is awesome in the nose! The Q jasmine has a hint of menthol which really brings out the jasmine and unlike the wilson’s Ylang Ylang it just keeps on and on, so I thought maybe it could help out the Ylang Ylang and I mixed them in my snuff box with a little NTSU black for some more N, well that turned it into a whole other thing with the jasmine being dominant the Ylang Ylang smell is lost. Though, Ylang Ylang is an awesome smell, it turns kinda tangy and funky in my nose and the smell doesnt last for me, probably just gonna stick with the essential oil if i want to experience the smell of Ylang Ylang.

The Jasmine is very nice indeed!

I’d love to have an insightful comment on this but I’ve never been able to open the tin. Maybe two pairs of needlenose pliers would do it…meh [natural laziness takes over; does nothing].

@Mike_B Gently squeeze the tin moving slowly around the circumference. At some point on your way around, you’ll feel it give. Do it over a clean piece of paper, as the Wilson’s tins are typically over full.

i notice the the ylang ylang as i scan the mr snuff special deals. thanks for a bit of comment. i’m assuming it is what it is–another floral for those who like that. speaking of florals-- chamomile—i might be a sucker for that.
