Wilsons of Sharrow Lemon Toast

Just received a shipment from Snuff store containing several of the new Wilsons snuffs. The one I was most curious about was the Lemon Toast. The ammonia in this one is not as strong, and I was able to sample right away, hopefully the lemon in this is strong from being fresh, but it is sharp and pronounced. Very clean, just like a fresh cut lemon. The tobacco is a shade darker than Irish Toast #22, and it is quite a bit moister, with an identical grind. I had just a momentary taste of toast, that is totally overwhelmed by the lemon. I am sure that I am going to have to air this a few times to get it’s true character. I would have hard time comparing it to the Toque Lime, since while they are both citrus, they are miles apart in flavor. I am a big fan of McCrystals mild lemon, and this one does not disappoint. I recommend tossing one in on the next order. I also will try the Rum and Raisin, and the Rum and Blackberry. they smell wonderful! I am going to give them all a little air and check back.

Thanks for the review. The new ones from WoS certainly sound intriguing – especially the Lemon Toast.

I’am waiting for the report on lemon lime toast.

You mix the lime in the coconut!

I’ve almost finished 25g of Lemon Toast now and I can’t say I’m hugely impressed with it. It’s Irish High Toast No22 with the same flavouring as Lemon Grove. Since I really like both of those I figured it would be a marriage made in heaven but I reckon the standard Wilsons base tobacco suits the lemon flavouring more. The flavour of the toast is masked too much by the lemon in this one.

I actually think it is more like Irish Dry High Toast (IDHT) #20 than IHT #22. Hard to get the toast on this one, lemon seems much more pronounced than Lemon Grove. Lemon Grove has always seemed toned down, this may be due to my tin, but it was factory fresh. The Lemon Toast is really sharp, pronounced. I wonder how a 25G tin mellows over time? My 10g tin has been in use just 24 hours. Still a great lemon hit.

@Whalen: You could be right actually. I don’t have any IDHT No 20 (the ‘D’ stands for ‘Dark’ incidentally) on hand to compare the Lemon Toast with, but the Lemon Toast is a bit darker than the IHT No 22 I have. Which is already a shade darker than I’ve had in previous batches. If so, I think I’d have preferred it if Wilsons had used the No 22 as a base. That would have given it a stronger toast flavour. As for Lemon Grove, it’s a flavour which doesn’t keep at all well in the poor tins that Wilsons use. I have some in bulk and the flavour is identical to the Lemon Toast.

Does it compare to Toque Lime Toast?

Be careful about cursing their tins. Do it too often and they will go the Gawith way.

To my shame I haven’t tried Toque Lime Toast yet, nor Toque Berwick Brown. Assuming Toque’s Lime Toast has the same base as their Natural and Whisky and Honey, I imagine Lemon Toast is markedly different. Re. the tins - if they “go the Gawith way” and start using plastic tubs, I’ll be quite pleased !

Plastic tubs would be ok, but it means you need a decent snuffbox. I meant either of the dreadful tap boxes used by either of the Gawith companies.

@BradMajors - I had no idea the D stood for Dark, I had been laboring along for a year thinking it was for Dry! I have over a pound of it, it remains a heavy daily snuff, one of my five stars. I was expecting the lemon to have a IHT #20 base! My Lemon Grove is indeed muted. I have a tub of Mild Lemon that has to be aired in order to enjoy, the lemon is too strong at first, but lovely when it ages. @Xander - Lemon Toast and Lime Toast are two different animals, my 2 cents, maybe someone else can tell, I am blown away by the lime, not nearly as pleasant to me as the Lemon.

@Xander: Yes I guessed you meant the tap boxes. Hopefully Wilsons won’t be so daft !

Just an update and apology for the too quick review of the Lemon Toast. I have had this now for three days, and after removing a third of the tin for gifting, it has aired and taken on a whole different character. The lemon has muted a bit allowing a very pronounced Toast flavor to develop, and it is certainly a IHT #22 toast flavor. I get the very tasty toasted tobacco flavor right away, with the lemon providing an excellent balance. Very nice and clean Toast. The color has changed back to a lighter color, just a little too moist with the aromatic lemon I guess. This one should be sampled, it sits very clean and dry in the nose as a toast will. I hope the lemon remains at this level now, for I find it just right. It has gone from a 3 to 5 stars for me. I love lemon, and I have always loved Toasts. A natural combo for me.

Pretty good toast. My tin has quite mellow citrus scent and is mostly toasty, I’d enjoy stronger lemon scent but this is enjoyable as it is. Edit. Opened another tin and this is has real lemon zest, tobacco also is fluffier and paler in colour so this must other batch, probably fresher but I enjoy this snuff either way.
