Wilsons of Sharrow Batch Codes

Has anyone else noticed new Wilsons tins come with a different form of batch code? Instead of three digits followed by the year and the letter EG 389 21A you get a string of six digits and the letter A with no discernable way of noting the year of manufacture. I first received one like this in December. I have written to them asking for more information but no response one week on.

I’ve noticed this as well. Have you heard back?

@Madhatt unfortunately not my email remains unanswered. I get the feeling they don’t want to divulge any secrets about their new coding!

Er, it’s a CODE, most products have them somewhere, being as such, not surprising they don’t want to divulge what it means.

@Hoffwell yes indeed but my complaint is it has gone from being an easy to read one to one which is not. It used to be so easy to divine and know if a tobacconist was trying to fob you off with an old tin. Most general products do have them but then again most products have either a date of manufacture or a best before date.

Looks like the team at Bletchley Park hashed it out and got the checksum from Wilsons. I’m imagining a water wheel driven cipher machine there at Wilsons.

I’d be curious about this - I received a tin of Extra M, it smells/tastes rather musty on a bump, nothing like a previous tin I have; hardly any menthol at all and the snuff itself is more like rocks which need breaking up. Absolutely nothing like the previous tin I received.
Not the usual quality I’ve had from WoS tins.
Code: 205 21A

Musty stands for stale in my books.

Check out this older thread dedicated to WoS quality issues:

I’d just like to add that I emailed them yesterday and received a reply within the hour (UK business hours).

The tin was packaged on 24 July, 2021 (AM shift).

See here for WoS date code keys: Wilsons & Co. (Sharrow) Ltd. Production Date Code Formats.

Thank you!
I reached out to Wilson’s and received a lovely little package from them - brand new tin in a rather fetching military green colour and a small tin of Ani Extra.
One happy snuffer here

My word! I’m usually phlegmatic to the point of stupor, but as a snuff enthusiast this link raised my heartbeat several times over. It’s a veritable treasure-trove for snuff history – past and present - and must surely rank as the most comprehensive and informative site on snuff manufacture ever produced. It’s made my career as a snuff historian largely redundant. I’ll be spending happy hours sifting through all this information. And so useful that Sharrow’s new production codes are fully explained. A truly wonderful find - and thank you!

Thank you so much for that wonderful link. Much appreciated.

My pleasure. I saw the link to the site posted somewhere, likely here, in the recent past, and have been referring back to it now and again since that time. I’ve occasionally found myself wondering who put it together, and/or who keeps it up and running, but that really does not matter. It is the content that is the star. Whoever is responsible, however, bravo!
