Will we still be snuffing in 20 years?

Hi all, A pretty general thread this one… What do you think the future of snuff is? Will the smoking ban increase the popularity of snuff? Do you want the popularity of snuff to increase? (the reason I ask this, is there is surely an esoteric appeal to snuffing?) With most of our governments turning our countries increasingly into Nanny states, will snuff live through the big tobacco purge? Does anyone know the general financial health of the snuff producing companies? Some have fallen (the great F&T) will others still be producing the great snuffs we know and love in 10, 20, 30 years? Would be interested in your thoughts. David.

With snuff use going on 400+ years now, I don’t see it going away anytime soon. Now who knows what will happen with the current proprietor’s of our favorite companies as they die off or retire. Will their kin keep the business running or will they sell off? No one knows. But as long as there is a market for it, someone will produce it. I do think smoking bans will help snuff. Another thing that will help is that there has been no lawsuits towards snuff companies for peoples health being damaged. The only reason I would like to see an increase in popularity would be to make the snuff easier to find locally like it used to be. As far as the health of snuff companies, snuff is usually only a small part of their business. Companies like Poschl make countless other products like cigarettes, cigars etc. A lot of other companies do the same thing. So they don’t rely on just snuff sales to keep the business going.

Well for this I’m a bit unsure. At the moment, the government are almost PROMOTING the use of snuff (i.e. the levy on taxes when it comes to purchasing nasal snuff in the UK), but I’m not sure of how much the popularity will increase. Cigarettes are deemed to be ‘cool’, something which teenagers get into ‘with their mates’, a far cry from pipe smoking and snuffing. Snuff doesn’t seem to have that same appeal to the general masses, due to, as what you described, it’s esoteric nature. It seems to be much more used by (and if you’ll pardon the following) the eccentrics, I mean that in no bad way of course, but I have to admit, and I’m sure a number of you here will also, that I’m an eccentric, one who enjoys the finer and more interesting things in life. I think Toque is an interesting concept, as it takes snuff away from being a gentleman’s dandy, to being something more commonplace and easy to take, whilst also being much more inconspicuous. That’s why my view on Toque is that it’s an advancement from a gentleman’s snuff tin. I’m not saying I prefer Toque’s bullets to my conventional tin, but it’s certainly a new and exciting brand that could possible open the doors to a whole new audience as well as being more practical. But still, the fact of the matter is, can you see people thinking it ‘cool’ to snuff, other than us eccentrics? After all, there’s less gunk in your lungs, but a lot more in the nose, which even myself I look at with a portion of uncomfortableness sometimes. But as to whether we’ll be snuffing in 20, 30 years time, I say yes, but I still feel that the general market will be pretty similar to that of today, maybe slightly expanded, but still generally encompassing those who enjoy something slightly more fun, and out of the ordinary. snuffinspecial

I doubt snuff will be disappearing any time soon. In fact I think it will be increasing in popularity, especially with all the smoking bans and people getting all uppety about smokers. I almost hope that it doesn’t grow too much in popularity. I think someone said that the govt is trying to raise tax rates on cigars and such since they are losing so much money with so many smokers quitting. I’m not sure how much difference there is in the existing tax structures but it seems quite large. I have a friend that has smoked little cigars (20 in a pack, the same size as cigarettes, and with filters, for anyone not familiar) for years now because the cost of cigarettes is $4 per pack and his little cigars are 99 cents, presumably because of the tax difference. I’d hate to see snuff prices go up $3 an ounce to the tax man. I’d rather go out of my way and order online or from international suppliers to get the variety I want. Speaking of which…I have a cousin in California that was buying her cigarettes online to save money. Recently she was required to pay all the CA taxes she had avoided. Apparently the online stores have to reveal who they sell to and how much to the govt’s of other states. In the long run she didn’t save any money. Are we at risk for some future tax bills due to our online tobacco purchases?

epicurean is what I prefer to call the type of person who likes snuff. I love the excuse that raiseing tobacco taxs will curtail smokeing since that isn’t how addiction works. It’s proven to be a completely ineffectual way of increaseing public health in fact the only thing that seems to work with any success is massive promotion of healthier alternatives. I do love how many people act like I’am crazy when I say that my snuffing is healthier then smokeing, “because all tobacco is just bad”, of course at that point I always point out that it’s funny that somehow they think they know more about my hobbies then I do. Well take a snuff for all the ignorant people

Most people tell me snuff causes lip and mouth cancer, even after I say nasal snuff

Majority of people in the US are used to lip tobacco being called snuff & I think its hard to get that out of their head. Lip tobacco does fall under the definition of snuff but I always refer to it as dip or chaw.

I’ve noticed that the media, even in the UK, seems to cooperate in promoting this confusion in the public mind. George Orwell was right. Just to stay on topic, I plan to be using tobacco & snuff for as long as I see fit to. Hell, I’m even making my own dip now. May have to turn to smuggling and cryptocultivation though.
