I started in a family Chicken business outside of Cincinnati in the third grade. My job was to take the live chickens out of the coops. A very dusty job when they get flapping their wings. An old guy told me I should put some snuff in my nose (to keep it runny and block out a little stink too!) Top was my first. I was about 16 at the time. I’m 36 now and there is so much good snuff now available! When another small box comes to my door with more snuff, I just tell my wife it’s for medicinal purposes- Snuff keeps sickness from entering the body!
Hi Bart - i used to be a full time chicken catcher travelling round farms in the UK. I never snuffed back then but a big pinch of menthol would have been just ticket for inside the sheds.
That’s a pretty good use for it! I took it up because I was interested in the historical value of it and also the novelty. I’ve been interested in tobacco for a little while, I find the history of it, or at least what I know, fascinating. I’d had the occasional cigarette but hated them and when I discovered snuff I just became fascinated and enamoured by it.
Well i don’t work with chickens but good god , some of the people using public transportation… It’s days like those I’m glad i carry snuff with me , especially if it’s menthol. I’ve had friends that don’t snuff ask for a pinch in times like those. I took it up because I’m a regular tobacco fiend , and because snuff is quite fascinating in itself like spam said.

I was a history major in college when I first learned of snuff, and it seemed right up my ally, but I didn’t try it till late last year, when I noticed some Poschl’s snuff at a local shop. Reducing my cigarette consumption was merely nice a side effect, but wasn’t my intention.
Snuff let’s me enjoy my tobacco in the house. I used to only smoke a cigar or pipe and the wife kicked me into the backyard to smoke and it gets cold here in NJ. Snus and e-cigar also lets me enjoy in the house. That is what started this passion!
I was reading about Beau Brummell and learnt how he popularized snuff in Regency England. I am already a pipe smoker. The book got me interested in trying to see how it would feel. When I saw the site where I order my pipe tobacco also carries snuff, I ordered some and started from there. The ones I bought did not disappoint me, so it got me wanting for more. And I have to say, snuff is quite good at keeping me awake during dull lectures.
Because it’s brings you joy, but its also a lower risk for health concerns than: cigarettes, chew, dip, pipe, hookah, etc., etc.,
because it smells really nice. It gives you a great icebreaker.
Just for the hell of it. Actually, I see all these smokers at work getting a 5-10 min break every hour while I was working my ass off straight through, and I decided I was entitled to some free time as well. So now I take a pinch on the way downstairs every hour, and if anyone asks what I’m doing just standing around relaxing outside but not smoking I tell them I’m on tobacco-break. If they challenge that, I just pull out the smash-box or tin, and grin.
I come from the North of England which was big mining country - miners used to take it for the same reason as Bart to keep the sinuses running. It was available in all the shops when I was a kid and I was just fascinated by it; I think mainly because the tins looked so cute. Iv’e used it on and off for years but it was a fantastic help when public smoking bans came in in England a couple of years ago and I just switched from cigarettes to snuff pretty easily; I refuse to stand out in the cold for a smoke if Im in a bar and snuff can be taken discreetly anywhere. And also when you get into it its a pretty interesting hobby unlike cigs.
Started with the intent of quitting cigs entirely. I’ve definitely cut down, but I guess it’s still a work in progress. NRT and Welbutrin were complete failures. Aside from that, Snuffing is a lot more enjoyable. The different varieties keep it from becoming boring. It’s slightly anachronistic, which is something else I appreciate. There’s also an aromatherapy component to Snuff that makes it a very calming, or stimulating, depending on what effect is desired.
snuffster, I’m like you, but I’m still living in the North of England. I could see the smoking in public places coming, I stopped the smokes and went back to my snuff. No way was I going to stand outside a pub in the cold smoking. Looking at my records, after smoking good cigars, pipes and a few cigs. it was full stop on 11-04-94 (That’s April 11th 94 to our American friends).
Good effort John!
I was just curious about it. I’ve been ordering Snus from Northerner for years and I noticed that they offered nasal snuff. I’ve look at the pages over and over working up the guts to try some. I ordered and couldn’t wait so I went to a local shop. W.E. Garrett shocked me, but then the package in the mail was fantastic. I didn’t start it to quit anything, but a “side effect” was that I’ve nearly quit snus. I find snuff more satisfying. I guess, not in the nic dept but in the tobacco scents. It also inspires some good conversation with onlookers.
I was strictly trying to quit smoking. I found nasal snuff by accident while searching mint snuff pouches. I had no idea how much I would come to enjoy it! I quit smoking cigs in two days, btw.

Cause it makes one read things like: “…snuff civilised Scotland and produced her many great men…” from The Story of Snuff and Snuff Boxes by Mattoon M. Curtis.
Cause it saves me about 3000 + dollars a year since smokes are about 5.50 a pack in Florida right now. If I spent 300 dollars on snuff today id have tobacco pleasure for the next 2 to 3 years easy. I can practically pay for a new car with the savings .
