White Substance?

I notice a whitish substance forming on the inside of my tin of Fribourg & Treyer Santo Domingo. Any ideas of what it is? Is it OK to keep using?

Possible it’s mold? I have read on here that some of the FT’s have the propensity to get moldy…I only have Seville and toasts… Never seen it B4…I think you should wait to get a answer from a more experienced snuffer than myself… But in the meantime, to be on the safe side, switch to another snuff and put that aside for the time being.

Just found this in the what are you mixing topic posted by Tom Strasbourg SG Celtic talisman with tiger cherry energy snuff. My first mix of tobacco and non tobacco snuff. It looks really weird kinda like when F&T tins get little white flecks in em except all over. Gave it a good nother shake and it’s more homogenized now. Just took my first pinch and WOW. New favorite cherry snuff right here. So maybe that’s normal

This has been reported a few times over the years, as far as I know it’s never been fully explained, or commented on by Wilsons who make F&T. Probably best to ask them.

Have you been opening and closing the tin a lot? There have been reports of something similar and it could be just very small particles of the tin rubbing off into the snuff

Interesting, that may be the problem. Thanks!

As recently mentioned in another thread it is most likely salt crystals forming from the snuff drying out, Santo Domingo has a high salt content.

Thanks for the clarification. Is it OK to use?

No, send it to me and I will dispose of it, for you. feel? smell? taste? glad I didn’t step in it ,lets go to lunch

Had the same issue w/a few of the F&T’s, I just bought new tins of them and put them into 2oz brown glass jars- may be the best solution, no probs since…

Just answered a similar comment in another thread. More like;y its tin corrosion or salt from dehumidification. Please look at recent threads and report back befopre doing anything drastic with your snuff!

it has happened to mine but i didn’t care and used it. I saw they are the pieces exactly dropping from the seal.

Same happened to me in my tin of SD. Picked out the white chunks and put the rest in a jar. the bottom of the tin was almost corroded through already and a slight push on it put a hole where the corrosion was. There was also some corrosion near the threads and on the lid near the seal. No signs of corrosion on my tins of Old Paris and HDT

Aluminum is bad for your Alzheimer, now what was I about to write?

I too have white balls, they’re in my white elephant, I don’t think there are any mold concerns here though. I should decant and further investigate. That white elephant has been in my face a few times, it was never a bad thing. :-"

That is the aluminum oxidizing/corroding, SD is hell on aluminum, best to transfer it to a glass jar as it will eat through the tin at some point not to mention contaminating the snuff.

@basement_shaman, couldn’t agree more, one thing not to sniff is oxidized aluminum for that reason alone (among others). Ive noticed this with all moist snuffs, the worst offender was Wilsons Kendal Brown. SD is also susceptible but my last container had no such problems. Id rather they were all packaged like @abraxas snuffs.
