Which snuff/tins DON'T need decanting

I have 30 small glass bail top jars which hold about 25-30g of snuff. One of these is dedicated to each of the dozen or so snuffs I have in bulk, and want to make best use of the others by using them to store snuffs most vulnerable to spoilage in their original pots. WoS tins are notorious for corrosion, and so I transfer the 5g tins to 10g recycled Toque tins, and the medium tins to the larger Toque tins. I have had to throw out 4 WoS tins this month due to corrosion. F&T pots seem to have a bad rep for long term storage too. GH tubs have given me no problems on long term storage, and so far neither have SG or Toque tins. Would everyone be in general agreement that WoS and F&T should be decanted for longer storage, whereas Toques, SG, and GH are fine in their original packaging, for a few years at least? Interested to hear what peoples experiences are

I’m interested in people’s experience here also. I would assume the drier and plainer, the less need to jar. If I might piggyback a question: Will unopened SG vacuum tins keep indefinitely, like pipe tobacco?

Drier snuffs would certainly make sense depending on storage conditions. I’m more concerned with internal corrosion. According to a few online forums I’ve read, the pipe tobaccos keep better in the round tins than in the rectangular SG type, but that might be after the initial seal has been broken. Don’t know about internal corrosion for storage, but I’ve had some when used as a daily RYO tin - probably due to wearing of the coating through repeated use

I’ve had moist SG snuffs corrode tins over time after being opened. I can’t speak for sealed ones.

Thanks for that @Zanaspus It’s looking like I seriously need to consider getting more glass jars

That is very good to know, @Zanaspus. I knew the F&T tins would corrode–my first Santo Domingo was corroded when I received it. I’ve had some moister WoS try to eat their little tins, too. I have some SG that needs to be decanted, then. I hope 6-8 months hasn’t caused a problem. I don’t know why this surprises me. Maybe I thought SG tins were of better material. I’d say that round tins are superior before and after opening. The square ones often don’t reseal very well. I have never had a bad seal on a new rectangular tin, but others have. There was an issue with the first few batches of Mac Baren Old Dark Fired corroding the tin from inside, too. I buy bulk pipe tobacco when I can, so I’m responsible for the packaging: nice shiny mason jars. I wonder if Ball canning jar company has any idea how much of their product is holding tobacco. The hardware store people must think I am a really avid vegetable canner.

I was curious as well, have some SG and Viking I won’t get to for awhile and figured I could leave it in the tins, perhaps I need to invest in some glassware. Curious about anyone else who has 2 cents to throw in. Also i have some poschls that are in the 25 gram bags that i just got any ideas on them?

@basement_shaman turned me onto these guys.  Nice price bulk price!  Here’s my preferred 2.5oz option:

Specialty Bottle in Seattle -has great decanters in many sizes and shapes. Chef Daniel uses them for his creations.Order from west or get them from the East at the other distributor.

Question how good are the small tins of old mill to keep snuff fresh ?

Scotches will keep forever although they do stand the chance of picking up other scents. Best to decant everything. The scents last longer and moist snuff won’t dry as fast.

I had got some toque snuff sent to me from a member who didn’t care for it, although the tin was 98%  filled  the scent was almost gone. The same snuff I have in jars the scent is still strong after many years.

@Marielle32 I never had OM last long enough

I figured @basement_shaman was going to advise decanting everything. Glad I already started on that path. As to the 98% filled unscented Toque… The scent usually doesn’t linger long in the nose at all, so I’m not surprised that it doesn’t stay long in the tin once opened. I like a few Toques, but the quick scent death of many I’ve tried makes me hesitant to try new ones.

@Tobe, I have numerous Toques that were purchased and decanted into glass immediately. They’re like 18 months old and still have their flavor. For instance , Violet and Grapefruit are very strong still. I think if they’re in air tight glass they would be fine long term. How long exactly I don’t know but at least 18 months

Toque’s Berwick Brown is my number one snuff, and Plain Coarse is an excellent base for diluting down snuffs which I find a little too potent. Aside from that, I just use a small selection of Toque snuffs as a change of pace. The short lived scent means it does not impede upon the other snuff that I will soon resume, so in that sense it’s actually a blessing. However, I seem to be moving more to Wilson’s fun snuffs to fill that role lately… albeit from a recycled Toque tin.

@jmahes You’re talking about Toques that were immediately decanted though, whereas I’m talking about Toques left in the original tins after being opened. Honestly, all of the early Toques I bought have lost the majority of their scent, though I didn’t know to decant them originally. Since then, my only issue is how fast the scent fades in the nose. @50ft_trad I get what you mean about the benefits of the Toque scent fading quickly, but for my money, that doesn’t get it. I know that a lot of people who’ve been into snuff for a long time love Toque, and there are some that I really like as well, but in many ways I feel Toque was simply my introduction to snuff, and now I’ve moved on. Not necessarily to bigger and better, mind you, but to the wider world of snuff, allowing me to find snuffs more to my liking.

@Tobe, ah yes I see what you mean. Yeah at that point I guess it’s moot to decant

@Tobe I kind of know what you mean. I have got the measure of Toque, and whilst there are flavours I would buy again, I’m not overly tempted to try new ones. With Wilsons and SG for example I think there is more exploration to be had, as there is a greater variation on tobacco bases and grinds, as well as scents and durations. As to starting with them and “moving on”, I did that with Wilsons Chocolate Orange, Rum and Blackberry, and a couple of others. I “moved on” from them too, but later discovered they were actually very nice to come back to as well.
