Which manufcturer have you purchased most from?

R

Ive gotten more WoS than any other snuff, followed by poschl, jaxons, and mcc last. How about you guys?

R

Pardon these damn typos, on phone.

C

By volume it is SWS

N

By volume Toque

M

WoS bulk, SG bulk, Toque tins

S

I think Lunecat keeps the snuff manufacturers in business…do you have an enormous nose?

F

By weight Samuel Gawith, by different snuffs Toque.

C

Probably Samuel Gawith followed closely by Toque.

R

So its official, the “Artisan” snuff manufacturers, whatever that actually IS isnt stealing all the customers from the old, big manufacturers as some have previously thought, theyre just given a warm welcome to the snuff-scene by us, the customers. WONDERFUL NEWS!

M

By weight, S. Gawith, followed very closely by Wilson’s (F&T’s included). Wilson’s makes such a range I find it hard to believe it hasn’t cropped up more.

I

Sam Gawith by weight and by range. Not too long ago Wilson’s would have been the answer to both, but I’ve had to stop buying their blends as I haven’t had one yet that didn’t clog me almost instantly. Disappointing since they have a number of scents I enjoyed, and even more that I would have been interested to try!

W

I am pretty sure Toque would be my most purchased snuffs by weight and variety.

T

By sheer weight - Swisher ( I have been amassing every American Scotch I can find ) By variety - Wilson’s of SHarrow

G

Toque or F&T/WoS.

D

Probably Toque then WoS\\F&T followed my my indulgent snuffs from @chefdaniel‌ and SWS

S

SG and Bernard’s.

T

Samuel Gawith (chiefly in the form of Viking Dark, which I go through at an alarming rate).

W

By quantity of tins is Toque, by weight it´s a tie between Wos & Molens.

K

6 Photo by far.

B

Toque and Wilson’s here. I’d say Toque is ahead by a nose. I can’t imagine life without Pomegranate and Tom Buck.

S

By volume: WoS and Pöschl (schmalzlers). By frequency and variety: WoS and Bernard

J

Probably Dholakia White.

_

by volume dholakia, by variety SG

B

Pretty much even between S. Gawith and Toque… Have not found one I didnt like but these are my favorites.

M

By weight, I guess it would be NB Madras–over half a kilo. Hedges would be a close second. After them, WOS/F&T.

R

@mecompco‌ that must be a lot of L260. Where do ya live? Have you trued WoS extra menthol? how does it compare?

M

Nope, have not tried WOS extra menthol–I should. I’d love to find a less expensive option then Hedges available in bulk (it is a bit cheaper by the 12 pack (240 grams)). I find the grind, moisture and menthol perfect, so a replacement would have to be spot-on.

R

@mecompco‌ WoS extra menthol is nothing short of a menthol-lovers wet dream. Your nose goes cold, it blasts anything right up, and its really strong. If you find it too strong, honey menthol is a nice alternative to extra menthol, same kind of menthol, but slightly weaker cause of the honey. Its easy to take too.

I’m in the US. Will have to try a tin of the WOS in my next order. I love the burn and tooth-numbing sensation I get from Hedges, especially with a “clean” nose. I use it morning and night (and sometimes in the middle of the night). It makes for some pretty intense snuff dreams.

R

@mecompco‌ oooooo that sounds fabulous. I love mentholated snuffs, they love my nose, and we have mutual respect for eachother. They dont hit y throat, I dont hit them with a garbage can.

It is awesome. I appreciate WOS’s flour, but Hedges is just so nice an fluffy. Seldom get any drip. It can cause sinus backlash when used to excess (as I have been known to do), but I have saline nasal spray to combat that. Excuse me, I have to go get a couple pinches now…

R

@mecompco‌ is hedges pure menthol or does it have more things going on too?

T

Now in my basket for Thursday’s payday. Well promoted @Roderick‌ .

T

I’m studying menthols. Purely scientific you understand…

R

@Roderick do you really do that? Can I move in with you? Please?

R

@Talljim TRY WOS EXTRA MENTHOL!!! And Toque menthol, tell me what the toque menthol is like too, I wanna try all menthols and have a basement filled with methol snuffs, so I can go down there and just breathe menthol.

T

Extra menthol is also in my basket…

R

@Talljim extra menthol is just so good. A cold sting, pain, freezing nose, followed by the wonders of menthol. @Roderick whats your menthol like? Is it strong? Long-lasting? Quick blast? Tell me all about it. please!

R

@Roderick sounds good, ill be ordering toque menthol next time I order. Thanks for the replies.

F

Couldnt even tell you haha. its even between SG, GH, WoS and Abraxas. the most SINGLE SNUFF would be abraxas firedrac.

H

I have made just about all of my purchases from retailers… If you are talking about which BRAND of snuff… then it is probably Poschl since I was pretty much exclusively a President sniffer for many years.

N

By sheer volume, 6 Photo Motia. It has almost completely displaced all other snuffs. Although, as the weather cools down (and it IS Oktoberfest season), I have rediscovered the joys of schmalzlers…

R

@number_seven Ive never tried a schmalzler, whats good about em?

S

for me it is from De Kralingse Molens. Since I live only 20km from the windmills I save shipping costs, go to the mill and pick my order up. And have a possibility to walk passed the barrels and grinders to see which snuff is fresh. And have a chat or cup of tea with the millers. That’s even funnier then going to a local tobacconist. I’m blessed.

R

@Salmiak whats the price directly from the mill?

S

@Rogue The prices are lower then ordering from mr. snuff. Nine euro’s for a 100gr tube. 1,25 for the 12,5gr boxes. Shipping costs are depending on if you order only some boxes (which can fit in an envelope) or tubes. But shipping costs are not high, the realistic postal charge. Check it out at http://www.snuifmolenswebshop.nl/

P

Toque.

D

Samuel Gawith - but Hedges is making up ground fast

H

41 Photo; the white elephant has me by the balls.

R

@horus92 what are the *photos like? Ive never tried em.

H

@Rogue *photos generally are simply Indian snuffs; because of illiteracy in India, it was traditional to identify a brand of snuff by the number of photographs on the tin. There are a wide array of Indian snuffs; many are heavily scented with spices, herbs and menthol; others are blends of species of tobacco with little additional scent. My main snuff is 41 Photo’s White Elephant, a snuff composed likely of sun-cured Indian tobacco + Pakistani rustica + salt + possibly trace amounts of ginger and other herbs. It’s extraordinarily dry, fine, and strong. Its scent varies from pinch to pinch - some mix of rotten fish, barnyard, and sweet pistachioes.

R

I dont think I would feel comfortable sniffing something smelling like rotten fish

N

@number_seven Ive never tried a schmalzler, whats good about em?

Not to sound snarky, but the flavor. At first, I wasn’t sure I liked it. I tried the Poschl Schmalzler D Doppelaroma. It had a light tobacco sweetness from the fermentation. To be honest, I can’t really place the flavor. Fig? Date? Blended fruit? Something else? It’s not got a straight tobacco flavor the same way any SG Kendal Brown has. It’s closer to an Elmo’s, but not as sweet. But it’s still tobacco. I grew to really like it because I was “forced” to: My girlfriend hates my Indian snuffs, but like the aroma of the German Schmalzlers. Then I tried Bernard’s Brasil, also a double fermented snuff. It has a more straightforward tobacco flavor. But it has the same underlying sweetness and flavor as the D Doppelaroma. There’s very little nose burn with either. None, actually. My nose may run a little, but it’s not like my favorite camphor, Motia, or gods forbid, like the L260 menthol… It’s light, mildly sweet, borderline fruity, but not flavored sweet or fruity. The flavor comes almost entirely from the fermentation of the tobacco. It works very well with German beers and food (surprise!). I am a big fan of situational snuffing. Same for hot sauces, etc. (Sriracha doesn’t taste near as well with gumbo as does a Louisiana hot sauce). So if you’re having German food and beers, use a German snuff. Lastly, even though the flavor isn’t particularly strong, I notice that it just sticks around a long time. Once I got used to the flavor (cuz it was different), I realized I really enjoyed that. Finally, (really this time), it’s a coarse ground, moist tobacco, so I never get a head shot, even with a big sniff. I boxcar or, more likely, as I have a German snuff bottle, I use the back of my hand to snuff it.

T

Samuel Gawith

B

Toque by far.

J

The most I’ve bought is certainly Samuel Gawith.

R

@Jari_T whats sg like in general? Grind? moisture?

J

@Jari_T whats sg like in general? Grind? moisture?

Hey, they do all sorts, and to be honest they all make me moist. Ahem, seriously, they have probably the most variation among all the snuff manufacturers. Not all of them please me. The traditional non- or slightly scented sorts are mostly brilliant, but the more modern Banana, Plum and Apple and other Tuttifrutti things don’t float my goat at all. Some of them are horribly, just terribly fake and faux. IMO, of course. Apart from the new artisan mill(er)s, including De Kralingse, Sam Gawith is one of the last houses that still make their snuff sorts based on different tobaccos and different processing techniques – and not just adding different exotic sounding fake (or “natural” - this can mean almost everything!) flavors in the same tired dusty tobacco flour. For one thing they are the last rappeé makers. Ah, Ze couple of German factories still have their old styles left. Bless them! I want to close this comment with a note and an self-observation of sorts that I do harbour a deep dislike any fake flavorings. This may or may not have to do with this occurrence that happened to me as a young man in the late '80s. A friend and I were working demolishing an old building that once housed an old ice cream factory. Down in the cellar we came upon a stash of dusty old glass bottles, all filled with colorful liquids. Big bottles from the turn of the century. Perhaps 40 ltr each, some of them half smaller. I remember thinking that the bottles themselves were worth something at least. Lets carry them out intact. My friend agreed, but wanted to pour the contents on the floor. Made sense to me, easier to haul. We opened a bottle and sweetest and the sickliest of fake banana aromas filled to room. And alcohol! Turns out the flavorings were all alcohol based. A few drops in a batch of ice cream would probably be enough. We had a sip each, and another. And another. It was definitely high octane food grade alcohol. Ninety-eighty per cent, maybe. Giddiness ensued. We called a fried who owned a van and were able to rescue all the bottles, two-three hundred litres all. That summer we had this big ongoing party at a summer cottage on an island in the Finnish archipelago. Two weeks maybe. Dozens of people. I don’t remember much else but we were able dilute the flavor-juice down into a drinkable punch proof, but the aromas we still quite overpowering. Strawberry, pineapple, banana, orange aromas everywhere. No one died or hurt themselves and everyone had the sweetest breath in the morning. Now, thinking back, this is probably why I can’t take fake aromas or flavors much. I’ve had them all already. HTH

S

Mc.Chrystal’s and Toque- in that order.

S

I have only procured McChrystals & Toque. The rest of my arsenal is home ground with a few Indians in trade or bought on this forum. Oh I bought some bulk Paanch online too…

K

Samuel Gawith has always had and still has the best base Tobaccos,Toque is #2 not bad for being a newbie ,

R

Samuel Gawith as I go through a lot of their pipe baccy too.

M

NB Madras is still the winner for me–another kilo should arrive shortly.

K

At this point, Old Mill.

J

Viking and Poschl.

S

Old Mill Here…

A

Wilsons of Sharrow

B

Wilsons of Sharrow they have the range they’ve got the right grind and such. And I think they do an excellent job at making snuffs.

M

S. Gawith, Toque and Poschel

H

I have made just about all of my purchases from retailers… If you are talking about which BRAND of snuff… then it is probably Poschl since I was pretty much exclusively a President sniffer for many years.

My last 2 kilo purchase of 6 Photo probably puts that in the lead now. I’m an exclusive 6 Photo sniffer these days…

M

Wilsons and weirdest of all, Silver Dollar. just because its the most common in my area. Wanting to buy more from Mr Snuff soon!

S

SG & Viking (lotta SG pipe baccy too).

P

Toque.

L

1-Poeschl (because i can buy it from the attar 5 minutes away from my house ) 2- 6 photo 3-Toque 4- WOS

R

I have more from SNUFFSTORES VERY OWN SNUFF than any other now.

J

WoS, without a doubt, in terms of bulk, thanks to my continued consumption of Jockey Club. In terms of variety, I’m really not sure - I should keep a snuff diary, I suppose! WoS, SG and our very own Chef Daniel would all be contenders, I think.

B

Different snuffs - SG Quantity - Dholakia counting all their products including fubar, wow, blast, temptation, Q snuff Wilson & Toque about the same plenty invested in 6 Photo and 41 Photo

C

In descending order, by volume: Toque and Dholokia (incl. FUBAR etc) are just about tied. Swisher F&T de Kralingse & WoS about tied Old Mill is pulling ahead of Bernard’s SWS and Poschl approx tied Then all the others (SG, GH, Viking, 6 Photos, etc)

J

Either WoS or Pöschl.

P

SG all round for me.

J

I’d say in descending order: Old Mill Sir Walter Scott’s Bernard various others
