Forgive me if this discussion has already happened, couldn’t find it anywhere. I started snuffing as a winter reprieve from pipe smoking. Many months of freezing weather kept me indoors and Brother Boontar from the YTPC made a snuff video, which led to rabbit trails, Many rabbit trails. The Englishman smokes also made some excellent videos around that time which led me to Ben at Snuffbegins. He was kind enough to send me some WoS standards to go with my W.E. Garret scotches and the rest is history. I’m a pretty eclectic personality and I rarely stick with anything, so if it lasts over a few months it’s probably permanent. So its safe to say that snuff stuck as I’m well over a year now and still collecting. I won’t say that it replaced the pipe. They go together. My son asks me what my favorite chess piece is every time we play and I always tell him that you can’t really have a favorite as they all have their place. Its the same in the tobacco world for me. So what about ya’ll? I see that many of you are pipe smokers. Did you smoke a pipe first, or go straight to the snuff? I never smoked cigarettes, but I know many of you did. The transition is interesting to me, thanks for enthusing.
I’ve been smoking pipes (and cigars) occasionally for quite some time, then I started using nasal snuff about two and a half years ago but it has not changed my smoking habits.
Mainly cigars for years then the pipe now snuff just this year. I did smoke a few cigarettes but really it was very very few and chewed a little too but that was such a small amount it really does not count toward my tobacco use. I did not really like cigarettes or the chew I tried so I stayed with as many cigars as I could buy. Snuff has always been an I want to try, but its hard to find unless you really look for it. It started as something to fill the gaps in between pipes and cigars and has become something all its own for me.
I have to say snuff. When I was 10 ,I used to make sand candles and sell them at a hippy shop on consignment. They had small tins labeled coke snuff. it was like Ozona Snuffy Weiss. With different flavors; I had went threw a few tins and then got the big brown jar of Levi Garrett rappee snuff for $0.35. It was nothing like the sugary sweet coke snuff. This was tobacco! I started chewing redman leaf and Apple plug tobacco that same year. Pipes and ryo tobacco smoking can about to hide the smell of other smoking mediums of the times. Mostly grabows and corn cobs, bugler & tops for the papers. Then stupid cigarettes for convenience. camels ,luckys, pallmall, and then it progressed from there. My snuff use took off when I could order online. Collecting pipes and better tobacco about the same time. I can say I quit smoking cigarettes but I limit it to ten or less per year. Pipe tobacco is far more satisfying. Catch 22 Cigars involved investing time to enjoy. Now I have the time but can’t invest.
Started with cigs, tried cigars occasionally, eventually tried snuff 20 years later. This led to joining snuffhouse and becoming tempted to try the pipe. Pipe didn’t interest me, snuff did, but still using rollies and e-cigs too. Occasional cigar still happens once in a blue moon, but nothing exotic as they cost too much
Pipes for me came first for sure.
I dipped in high school and beyond, took up cigs to quit dip. Grabbed snus to quit cigs. Snus led me to snuff (thanks Roderick). Snuff led to pipes. This journey took 30 years. I had smoked a few bowls in the past but never got serious about it. Snuff and pipes both came into force in my world in the same year, but snuff was definitely first. I still will smoke 4 or 5 cigars a year, but outside of that all my smoked tobacco is in a pipe.
I always had a pipe. First one was my grandpa’s old one, which I found when he passed away. Lost it as a drunken teenager somewhere. Bought a new one. Lost it as a drunken university student. Bought a new one. I’ve always been interested in pipe smoking, but it never occured to me, that one can get good hints in internet. Often I bought a pouch, got a horrible tongue bite and forgot the whole thing again for half a year. Then the same thing again. When I was younger I was more interested in cigars. Then they went and banned indoor smoking and it kind of killed my cigar smoking. I still smoke a cigar here and there when the weather is nice. But it was the cigarettes which I smoked for the most part. My first experiences with snuff came late and because the exposure was limited to mentholated Pöschls, it did not really take of. Only when I was in Regensburg and discovered the non-mentholated (or slightly metholated) Bernards, I started to carry snuff with me. But it took some time to actually start using it more often. Last year I tossed the cigs which was not even hard because of the snuff. Now mostly snuffing, but as the summer is closing in, I’ve finally studied how one actually smokes a pipe. I do not want to take it up as a daily habbit, but I am much interested in pipe smoking at the moment
First for me were cigarettes, then the pipe which I found too frustrating and gave up. I then started smoking cigars regularly which rekindled my interest in the pipe. Hanging around the pipe forums introduced me to snuff about 5 months ago.
Pipe. I ignorantly sneered at snuff on the Puff forum and someone challenged me to actually try it. So I did. And here I am.
Started with an occasional cigar - didn’t even smoke often enough to keep a humidor (back then - I stock one, now), and bummed the occasional cigarette in college. The first form of tobacco I really used regularly and in volume was the pipe. It’s still first “true love” in that regard, and still the form I use most frequently. That was a little better than 10 years ago. I first started snuffing about 3 years ago, but not often and from a very limited variety…flash forward to today, and I’m very much enjoying the wonderful world of snuff. TL:DR: Pipes first, Snuff second.

Yeah, I got frustrated by the pipe too. For me tobacco is about getting a fix on the go, and I just don’t have the luxury of time to spend pissing about with everything. Add in the tongue bite and the frustration of trying to get it packed and burning right, and it just wasn’t worth the hassle for me. That’s one thing I like about snuff, a quick pinch takes seconds and then you can savour the effects indoors or out, with both hands free, and carry on whatever you were doing that little bit happier.
I smoked cigs then switched over to the pipe and kept seeing snuff on the sites I get my pipe baccy from (not anymore, thanks PACT!) and seeing as how it was dirt cheap I decided to give it a go and here I am
Pipe is still the best way to smoke tobacco, but so much kit! I had to carry a shoulder bag every time I left the house. I get out a lot more now that I use snuff. Definitely the most practical way to use tobacco, not even factoring in the restrictions on smoking.
Definitely started with pipe, Snuff came 20 years later.
Cigarettes first, then pipe. Snuff came 20 years after I quit – chiefly for its decongestant qualities.
