Ya I know it seems so dumb question but really I am confused… every time I take a pinch most of the snuff never stays in the front of the nose and it always passes this part…the only way to put the snuff in this part is to shove it inside… so all the rest of the snuff which passes this area is wasted or what ?

If your face don’t look like this your doing it wrong? full artical here.http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/1778668/Sniffing-contest-goes-wrong.html

K

@basement_shaman LOLLLLLLLL

T

Actually, if your face looks anything like that, you are doing it quite wrong

K

@tybalt I think they dipped their noses directly in the snuff box

P

Anything that goes past is absorbed much faster, however, much more uncomfortably. While i like my snuff in my nose, i will admit to sometimes snorting a line of Cheeta.

Edit: By the way, @kougy you are a great addtion to this forum. i really like your quest for knowledge, and you have a kind heart.

K

@basement_shaman Thanks a lot man

I like my snuff anywhere where the cyan lines indicate. Apparently on the conchae.

K

@thorgrimnr Ya this is more logic because concentrating the snuff during inhaling in the front of the nose is nearly impossible… and the conchae (turbinates) have a big surface area and are responsible for directing the air flow, humidification, heating and filtering of air inhaled and carry scent molecules where olfaction nerve receptors are located (I have a bachelor degree in medicine but I don’t practice though)… so ya I think when snuff is inside these areas it must make an effect too and maybe even a more robust one…

In the nose. I wouldn’t worry about aiming for a particular part of it - the key to pinching is the pressure of the insufflation not the aim.

K

@Snuffster I kinda worry about the same because what ever I do I cannot aim so I try to practice having a pressure control.

I think you just need to get on with taking it and getting used to it without getting too bogged down in the method. That snuff use has a ‘technique’ at all is only a product of the internet, before you would just get on with it and find your own style; when I started using snuff I had a vague idea that you brought pinches of it to the nostrils, but nothing more complex than that. No disrespect intended, but I think you could end up with the completely false impression that there is some skill attached to taking snuff - there isn’t. Lets break it down to basics. Assume a pinch is the size of a pea - an arbitrary assumption but let’s go with it - and that this is best enjoyed shared equally between both nostrils - at this point forget any notions of technique and just trust yourself to find the best way for you to do this. Bear in mind all the points made on this thread by all means but discussing how to do it is like discussing how to ride a bike - the balance can only come after repeated, failed attempts to stay upright.

You only have to learn how deeply to sniff and co-ordinate opening your thumb and finger to release the tobacco, this can only be described not taught.

K

@Snuffster So what do you think about back of the hand method ?

A

Its all down to personal taste and preference. Personally, I find it messy and  hard to avoid getting some snuff on my face that then needs to be wiped off - for me anyway, I’m sure it’s the perfect method for some people. I find the pinch much cleaner and it can be done very discreetly if needs be. I can take a pinch neatly enough to be certain there is no brown dust on my lip.

You just need to get used to it, snuff is an odd thing if you are new to it.

K

@Snuffster Thanks for your information, enjoy snuffing

J

I snuff with eager hunger then spit or swallow what drains back, tilting my head forward to encourage the teetering phlegm to move forward into the blow. After blowing out the less viscus I let the nose air dry until I start feeling boogers form. After a refreshing pick and blow I will be ready for another snuff. This all may take twenty minutes on average.

H

@thorgrimner

I’m with you! You are not getting the full effect if the snuff goes beyond your olfactrory nerves. i.e.; That part of your nasal cavity where you have your sense of smell.

Thats another reason why I like the boxcar method. Since the pressure is a function of the square of the distance from your nose (my degree was in physics) you can moderate the pressure quite nicely by simply moving your “boxcar” 2 to 4 mm away from your nostril without changing the force of your inhalation.

K

@howdydave But I think “boxcar” method is difficult to use with fine grinds…what do you think ?

H

The boxcar is the only method I use with scotches.

K

@Harlequin I think if I do the same I will be FUBAR in seconds
