Where does it all go?

I’m curious: snuff is obviously consumed when taken, but where does it all end up going? To the sinuses? One reason I’m asking (and the reason why I put this thread in this forum, as I think one of my problems is technique) is because I’ve got sinusitis now. I started taking snuff over two weeks ago, and a few days ago I started with this. I think some went to my throat as well, and now I’m coughing and feeling like I’ve something stuck down there. I know it’s not s’posed to go to the throat, that’s why I blame my technique. I only take small pinches, and no more than 4-5 of those a day.

If you’re experiencing pain especially above your eyeballs you are snuffing too hard. Try the throat drop method. If you live where the air is dry, you may moisten your nose with wet fingers or a saline spray before you snuff; The snuff will stick in your nose. If you’re concerned about accumulation then use a handkerchief or tissue and blow it out before your next pinch. Snuff should be pleasure not pain, unless you’re into that.

Hi, basement_shaman, Well, in the interest of full disclosure, I must say that I had a case of sinusitis due to a tooth infection last summer. Once the root canal was done, it subsided. I’m wondering whether snuff ‘reawoke’ it. Yes, it’s quite dry here in the winter: humidity can go all the way down to 20% –I’ve a humidifier running. When I started taking snuff I did get the nasal discharge (I didn’t experience any nicotine buzz, but that’s another topic) and had to use my hankies. Lately I have no discharge, which strikes me as odd.

Half my snuff goes on the floor…

If it was one of Maxillary canine those roots are 1 1/4" Long and do reach up to your sinus. Infected teeth can kill you. Better see a doctor or dentist and get some antibiotic. It may had not been the snuff but rather something on your fingers. Bacteria or mold spores that were introduced while you used snuff. I use a spoon because I know where my hand have been.

Snuff goes wherever the mucus takes it.

I’m taking medicine now. When this goes away, I’m gonna try again. Guess I’ve time to find out how to do it right. :stuck_out_tongue: Given my current clumsiness, should I stick with coarse and/or moist snuffs? The one I bought was Pöschl’s Gletscher Prise.

Gletscherprice is something like sticky maybe the columbia oil! makes it. I suggest waterbased snuffs mostly English brands to check it. You can use gletscher anytime sooner because it will stay fresh even 1 year.

@Methery as far as general advice goes, coarser moister snuffs are the place to start. I personally started with SG Elmo’s Reserve which is most definitely a coarse moist snuff.

That’d be another question: does snuff dry out? Is there a way to remoisten it if so?

@Methery like @vitelius has said the coarser moister snuffs are good starters. I am very new too. Stok Vanilla, which is coarse and dry is also very easy to take. I don’t think you can get it to go into your sinus or throat even if you were trying. I also found Snuff Store grind in Black Magic easy, and would agree that SG’s grinds are easy too. I picked up Fire Dance, a wonderful blend that fresh reminds my of Hoppe’s no.9 but after a day or two brandy, vanilla, and blackberries, it is very easy to take too. Yes, snuff can dry out and lose scent. I keep mine right now in mason jars because I have them available but others use glass pill bottles just run a search and you should fine them. Transfer the 25g tins into the jar and keep only what you will use in a short time in the tins, or snuff box if you have one. When they are out just refill from the jars. If they get dry you can rehydrate by using a bottle cap of distilled water (not tap water) and putting that in the center of a bowl surrounded by the snuff (don’t add it directly to the snuff) then cover the bowl so it is air tight and wait several hours. The water will be gone or most of it and your snuff should be fine then.

Ha! My truck’s floor mats have a fair bit in them.

How do you sterilise your jars? I purchased a box along with the Gletscher sachet. This is how I’m keeping it now: Only like 10g fit into the box, though, so I still have the remnant in the sachet ‘sealed’ with a bulldog clip. I do have glass jars from jam and the like around, and even a tinted glass jar for light sensitive stuff. Now, about that wooden box I did not sterilise it, just poured the snuff right into it. I didn’t care much for the varnish smell it had, but now it smells of the snuff only, apparently. Heh, maybe I’m worrying too much.

http://www.wikihow.com/Sterilize-Bottles-and-Jars-for-Canning Also for wood snuff boxes I use http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/356798#Comment\_356798 don’t get wood boxes wet; they will swell if not sealed.
