Wondering where I can buy/try Stoker’s chewing tobacco here in the States. Is there an online source, and is online retailing of chew even done after PACT? Also, will someone define the difference between plug chew, twist, chewing tobacco and rope tobacco? What I *don’t* want is anything like Skol, Copenhagen, Grizzly, Kodiak etc. That stuff just swims all around my mouth…cheek and gum my fat arse… Ugh. I did for awhile enjoy Day’s Work, which I think is a sweet plug? Also, back years ago I chewed BeechNut, which was different from the Day’s Work, but much more roughly cut than canned dip. Help me sort this out? TIA
Plug-compressed block of tobacco that you shave or cut off chunks of to chew. Days Work is a classic example. Chewing Tobacco-Rough cut tobacco leaves, usually with flavoring added. Beechnut is representative of this genre. Rope: tobacco spun into a rope. Slice off discs or just bite off a chunk to chew. Twist: similar to rope, usually smaller diameter.
I can get Stoker’s chew easily where I live. Mainly in the big bags. They only stock a couple in the regular size pouches. A few of the discount cigarette stores carry it. Lilbrown.com carries it as well. They ship to most states I think
Stokers quite their mail order sales some time back, but it can still be ordered. And some tobacco shops will carry it. Check out lil’ brown smoke shack http://lilbrown.com/c-193-stokers-leaf-chew.aspx http://lilbrown.com/search.aspx?searchtermx=stokers
I know everyone hates northerner but I get my stokers from them.
I don’t mean to derail here, but why do so many people obsess over Stokers? Is there something particularly special about it or what? I can get it easy but never tried it, usually going for Red Man, Levi, or Beech Nut.
@Harlequin as far as the ones i have tried go, no, nothing really spectacular. I think it may be memory vs. reality in some cases. What i mean is sometimes when we try something new to us, and find it amazing, its that initial taste, smell, etc., that will always prevail. The first one we tried will always remain the “best” in our minds. When i first started smoking in high school, i went on a class trip to Chicago. I convinced an upper classmen to buy me a pack of cigarettes. What i got was Gitans. That was the greastest pack of cigarettes of my life. So rich and full of flavor. Fast forward to a about six years ago. I found a site(out of Israel if i recall) and bought a carton of Gitans. Long story short(too late), not that spectacular. I realize my pallett had aged a few years, but things are not always as great as you remember. Locally, i can get about 2-3 kinds. I believe i can find the “Tennesse Chew”, in the 1lb, for $10-$20(its been a while since i bought some). Its a Native American Reservation, so, only Federal Tax.
@Harlequin The chew is quite decent, nothing out of the ordinary - but a good regular chew. I guess important factor is the price.
@Harlequin You can beat the price for quantity, especially when you grab in bulk, like the 16oz bags. They do have pretty delicious flavors, especially the butternut. I’ve found that the flavors are truer & last a lot longer than any other. And couldn’t beat the price on the dry snuff, that I stocked up on just before Stokers catalog sales ended. Bought multiple tubs of each, couple tubs of the moist snuff & a couple 1lb bags of long leaf in the mini fridge, couple of the raw tobacco hands, raw twists. Tubs in pic.
yes troutstroker hit the nail on the head. They have flavors no one else has that are nice. The price is great.
Are the raw hands and twist still avalible anywhere? Never really had a chance to try those.
So they just closed up the mail order dept. and still produce? Are they making the plain dry snuff still? I still have several ounces left but from what I remember it was like $30 for a 2 pound tub. What a deal that was! Maybe littlebrown can get it? and more Levi big jars.
There is some info here http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/3614/fred-stokers-closing-shop
Well, Stoker’s isn’t a big deal for me, per se. I was just curious about flavored chewing leaf, and somebody here pointed me toward Stoker’s. However, after trying some G&H Sweet Rum Twist, I’ve given up the idea. Snus is more my speed, if I’m going to put something tobacco in my mouth. Can’t stomach Copenhagen, Skol, Grizzly or any of that stuff either. Thanks for the pointer however to Li’l Brown Tobacco and the comments on Stoker’s history. Whew.
@onefortheroad Yeah basically. One issue was the sell-out and consolidation mentioned in the linked thread from PotPoe. Then also the mail order business was shut down. Only the products that were mail order catalog exclusives were discontinued, so sadly that included their two dry snuffs. You might be able to persuade Lil Brown to contract with them to revive it. That’s a good idea, actually. I’m quite glad I was able to procure a good supply before its demise. Big thanks to @Bart for helping me out.
@xander I sent them an email. Asked about the Levi jars and the Stokers. I’ll let you know if/when I get a response.
I miss @Bart.
I just tried some of the G&H Sweet Rum twist. Yeccccch. I guess chaw ain’t for me. I managed to keep a tiny disc cut from the twist in my mouth for about 20 minutes. It may take days to get this taste out of my mouth. No sir, I don’t like it. I don’t know if the Black Cherry will be any better. This might go into my “Tobacco to Trade Away” box. Or maybe I’ll dry it, grind it, and seive it into nasal snuff. Bet *that* will be tasty.
Stoker’s was a major disappointment for me. Tried several flavors too. Cheap in bulk.
My advice is to try to love some Ettan los or Pioneer los, keep to snus for your health.
