Hi, fellow snuffers. Tomorrow morning I am going to Gibraltar just for the pleasure of buying snuff. Gibraltar is 130 km away from where I live. I´ve been there before, but can´t remember if tobacco shops there sell snuff. I guess they should, because if I am not mistaken, Gibaltar is part of the UK, where snuff use is more common than in Spain. So, do you know where can I find good snuff? And, by the way, what do you suggest I buy? All suggestions are welcome. Thanks
Lewis StagnettoI saw this on Samuel Gawith’s website once and remembered it. I was in Gibraltar a few years ago, but I was not really using snuff then. There really is only one very short proper market street, so any tobacconist there would be my first stop. Good luck.
Thank you, Xander. I have just downloaded a page with the addresses of seven tobacco shops in Gibraltar. Lewis Stagnetto is located in Main Street, along with two or three other tobacco shops. I hope I find there some interesting kinds of snuff!!! Enrique
Well, I have been today in Gibraltar. Apart from having a wonderful English breakfast, practising my English, and driving over 250 km, I came back almost empty-handed. They only have there Samuel Gawith Zip snuff. Just Zip in every tobacco shop! Can you believe it? It´s true. Cigarettes in Gibraltar are very cheap, a whole carton of Chesterfield is only 17 euros, so there are at least 30 tobacco shops, seven or eight proper tobacco shops and the rest of them shops selling many things, including tobacco. I bought two boxes of Zip. Or Gibraltarians enjoy Zip very much, or the businessman selling Zip to Gibraltar tobacco shops is a hell of a businessman!!! @Xander: You were right. I found Zip snuff in Lewis Stagnetto in Main Street. Enrique
Well that’s better than most of us can find in shops, so not quite empty handed. I’ve heard good things about Zip. I hope you enjoy it. Hopefully you got in some sightseeing, the Rock is something to explore.
I’d love to go to Gibraltar, you get all the Englishness of England but with Spanish sunshine and the same currency, language etc. Gotta go there one day. But at the moment I just can’t stop going to the Isle of Man. 10 times in 4 years and another trip booked for September. Love it there. Stefan
@ Enrique Zip is a good snuff been on it all day. Mix it 50/50 with WoS Camphor and Mild and you have the perfect snuff IMHO. Stefan
@ Stefan: not exactly the same currency. I have a bunch of Gibraltar pound notes that no bank will take from me. I guess I can try to pass them off in the UK someday.
@walrus: thank you for your suggestion. I will try it that way. As you know, I am a beginner in snuff, just been snuffing for 8 days, so I have a lot of things to learn.
@Xander in the UK currency is a funny thing. The Bank of England issues notes for the whole of the UK, they are legal tender in all 4 countries of the UK. In Scotland there are 2 or 3 banks that issue notes but these are (at least in my area of England), rarely accepted outside of Scotland. Northern Ireland also issues its own notes and these are not legal tender outside of NI. The Crown Dependencies (IOM, Jersey, Guernsey), issue their own notes which are legal tender between themselves but not on the mainland UK. Gibraltar notes work the same as any other non Bank of England note and not accepted outside that territory but I didn’t realise it was a “different” Sterling to that of the UK and Crown Dependencies. Any Channel Island, Isle of Man, Scottish, and Irish notes are interchangeable at any bank for English notes, I thought Gibraltar was the same? Stefan
I think Cornwall has its own pound as well but it’s not issued now. I have few notes of that Northern monopoly money.
Stefan, the value is the same like the Scotland notes, etc. The colors and shapes of the notes and coins are the same. They just have some different motifs as the English ones. Its just that every bank I’ve been to trying to exchange them since I left Gibraltar refuses to accept them. They look on them with a wary eye. I’ve given up trying.
me to allanH i have a few of those ulster bank notes . from what i gather people were selling them 20 for 10 etc . according to my da they where everywhere … probably still is the biggest bank robbery in the world
@Walrus1985: It’s even more complicated than that. Technically, Bank of England notes are only legal tender in England and Wales. And Scottish and Northern Irish notes aren’t legal tender anywhere. In fact the only legal tender for payment of unlimited sums in Scotland and Northern Ireland is £1 and £2 coins. There used to be sterling banknotes issued by private banks in England and Wales too but in 1844 an act was passed which stopped newly formed banks from doing so. In 1921 the last English bank which was allowed to issue their own notes went out of business. See here. All the Scottish, Irish and Crown Dependancy notes are legal currency in that they’re all backed up by the Bank of England. But a trader can refuse to accept them if he wishes. As Xander says, Gibraltar notes are on a parity with Sterling but I think some British banks charge for exchanging them.
@Brad I didn’t realise that. I better stock up on £1 and £2 coins if I go to Scotland or NI lol. When I worked in pubs there were so many fake Scottish notes doing the rounds that everywhere round here stopped accepting them. I think only Marks and Spencers and McDonalds does now, in Chesterfield at least. If I ever get a Scottish note I ask for it to be changed for an English one as I know they will be accepted without question. Seen as I’ve never been to Gibraltar I’ve never had any Gibraltar notes, but you can exchange Manx notes free of charge. Stefan
