I have at this time 53 different snuffs. Is this too much? I feel like I’ve gone overboard, but I also feel like I have a wide variety to chose from for whatever mood I am in. About how much do you guys have in your collection?
I’m glad you brought this up, I hadn’t counted for so long! 128 different varieties in my collection. I have slowed down in my buying lately but I enjoy the researching, ordering, the anticipation and of course trying the new flavors when they arrive. I figure there are many worse hobbies! Truthfully I use my scotches and Toque Toasts more than anything else and I probably won’t touch 90% of what I have more than once or twice.
I haven’t counted them or anything but the snuff bar is really full. There were around 150 last year when I took these pics. And I’m like you miamimark, scotches and toasts for regular use. The rest is just for variety when the mood strikes. But when it does I go kinda crazy and start sampling everything in sight.
I have 203 different snuffs now but I know of members who’s collections are much bigger than mine.
What are you all looking at me for? I reckon Xander or Leman have far more different snuffs than I have…
Dont feel bad at all, I only been around for maybe two months and i have around 120 different snuffs! I tell you though, each and everyone has thier own little place in my heart/nose! I DONT REGRET A BIT OF IT, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE SNUFF oh yea not to mention my; 4 patrick collin snuff boxes including the new one w/spoon compartment, 4 snuff boxes with the little heart stamp on back (can someone tell me who makes these i bought them from mr.snuff),2 German snuff boxes made by George, and 1 chinese snuff bottle, 2 sterling silver snuff boxes, 1 antique brass snuff bottle w/spoon, 10 bullets and a posh!
Well, one thing about snuff, to me at least, apart from using and enjoying it, it’s a very nice collectable hobby. I have a bunch of snuff, would last me years I believe. Sometimes I might trade some off, but I still get more, especially when it’s new odd stuff(to me). I just wanna get it.
Collecting is nothing to be ashamed of. Imagine if you were smoking; what would you have to show for it? A bunch of stinking crushed out butts, empty packs, and a large hole in your wallet! With more types and flavors to fall back on, you never lose interest from day to day and when I empty a nice looking tin, it joins my old bottles on a shelf in my garage as a very classy decoration, I must say.
I have a confession to make. From purchasing about 60 I have about 35. --Mixing MISTAKES. I know, all the snuff-less children right? Hear come the flogging!
It’s been a while since I last counted but I had 373 different snuffs at that time. I might be over 400 now.
I have more than 60, but I could get by with 10. Most I rarely use. Some I use every day, and some occasionally.
I certainly do wish I could use snuff at a quicker rate. It’s good to have such small tin sizes. It’s hard not to try out new snuffs all the time. I have however surrendered to not trying every snuff possible. That makes this forum and snuff reviews somewhat important. I can enjoy vicariously the endless variety of snuff.
Been at it a year now. I have 34 different snuffs at this time. Tried maybe 90. I know I’m still at amateur status. @hookster, those are Heartwood boxes. I have 2 of them. I know of a few others on here that own them also.
I think that the collection should grow until you’ve reached the point of where you could possibly consume them before time ravages their intended experience. Some would mean that you’d have them for the rest of your life. I guess the collection would be too big if you could not properly store them well enough to maintain their integrity. Now, I’ve only been snuffing since June, I think I have about 45 on hand and 30 that I keep in an awkward rotation but I know I’ve tried around 100. I’m still in the trading stages to further my experience or broaden my horizons if you would. They say that variety is the spice of life. It would be absurd to think this wouldn’t apply to snuff as well.
@bigmick, thanks do you know who or what company make the heartwood boxes? I like to know a little back ground about them if possible. As far the PC boxes i know who makes them but i also would love to hear more about the maker and what how he went about making them, he probably made one and seen that they could be sold on todays market, would be my guess. I know he does a damn good job at it, its quite fine craftmanship. Ever since i started snuffing, its like now im so interested in history now, its wierd but not in a bad way, I’m enjoying every minute of it, and eager to learn all i can! so if anybody is willing to spread some light on the history of the boxes(even the German George ones), my ears r open! Thx folks!
I started this from pipe smoking. I have a small mountain of pipe tobacco, and find that there are only a few that I really want to smoke since I have been diverted to snuffing. With pipe tobacco, over time I got to the point where I accumulated large amounts of what I know I like, and try one or two new a month. I haven’t bothered to count the damage from my newbie frenzy with snuff, but have already decided to go ‘vertical,’ buying bulk of the snuffs I know I like rather than doing a lot of horizontal tasting. I’m trying to limit that to two or three new a month as well. Not counting schmalzlers, only a few snuffs would I miss if the sky fell tomorrow.
I’ve lost count of the number of snuffs I’ve tried, hundreds I guess, but I never keep them - I’m just not a collector. I either finish the tin or give it away when I try something new. I probably only have a stock of about 50 types at any one time. The thing with me is that Ive got very conservative taste - I mostly use just toasts and SP’s, usually out of the same Victorian silver snuff box. Now I’ve pretty much lost interest in trying new flavours and will probably knock any further reviews on the head as well.
Almost 300 tried here. I’ve been collecting them almost a year. I have managed to finish a dozen tins or so, so I am working the collection down to a more manageble level. I have a few that I really like in bulk, and will get more bulk in time. Eventually they will get used up. Some will get replaced regularly, some will get replaced occasionally. I think about 100 are one time only.
I tend to be a lot more simplified, I have around 20 or 30 tins… I keep what i like on hand and occasionally will stray to find a new flavor… I have a problem with choosing one over another… For example; one gf i had, we would go out to eat she would look at the menu then tell me i could choose one or the other… The thing i hate most of all is being out of snuff… So to answer the question; the skies the limit you can never have enough or too many…
@ thehookster:-heartwood
Thanks Snuff Head!
Your welcome, I see their in Rockford IL only about 80 mile from onefortheroad. Very talented wood-workers out there.
I agree!
I have tried 200 or so, but either finished a lot of them, or given them away if I’m struggling to finish them. I generally keep no more than 100 tins at a time. I have McChrystals O&G, McC SP, Wilsons Lavender, Hedges L260 and a toast (either Toque Natural Toast or Whisky & Honey) at hand at all times. The rest I dip into when I fancy a change.
@thehookster- Can’t remember where I talked about this before. You are correct. I originally made my first snuff boxes because I didn’t much care for the Wilson’s snuffboxes (which it turns out are made by heartwood) because they seemed too big and though I do like wilson’s I didn’t want my only snuff box to be an ad for them. At the time they were the only snuff boxes I could find at an online retailer. Decided to go custom. My first snuffboxes were actually made from an extra hickory kitchen cabinet door from a kitchen remodel I had done. Then I made some more out of oak and poplar and added inlays to them. Offered to sell some here to members on snuffhouse. Half of them were gone by morning. Been making them since. @snuff head- looked them up on mapquest. 47 miles from my house to their door.
@onefortheroad Thanks, keep up the good work! maybe one day we can get together and make me a custom snuffbox! Mann that would be Awesome! lol ps till then i will continue to buy the ones you already make!
I’ve been snuffing for just over a year & think I have over 200 snuffs, only two or three of which have lost their flavour over time. I’d say that I probably have around 50 firm favourites and about 10 of those I’d never wish to run out of. It does get a bit compulsive adding to the collection, I suppose, but I enjoy it. One of these days I’ll start trading off the non-favourites and hardly used ones. I also have 6 PC boxes (the absolute BEST snuff boxes you can get), 2 Indian-made wooden boxes that are a little too big to carry about, two Chinese snuff bottles (one glass, one bone), and an oval metal chew/snuff tin. I don’t regret buying any of them nor begrudge a penny that I’ve spent.
I’m not going to order any more snuff unless it’s a real favourite I’ve run out of. I will also keep my collection down to no more than 100 snuffs. I’m not happy anymore with the large amount of snuff I have sitting all over the place. It makes me feel guilty because I really have more than I can ever use.
Snuff donations accepted, Mr. Claassen. j/k. I’ve got enough to take to a fallout shelter too.
I try to only keep about a dozen snuffs that I really enjoy. Although I try to sample all the different snuffs I seem to always have some on the exchange. Heck, I have five I need to post soon. Heartland boxes are simply beautifull. He should consider making high-end humidors. Theres big bucks in them.
I bet I have over 100 now the last time I counted it was 60 but that was before several orders. Like I say, “I have enough tobacco to last through the apocalypse.”
Between my pipe tobacco and snuff I am set but that doesn’t mean that I won’t get more. It is nice to have choices.
