I snuff happily wherever I am, after having offered a pinch to all present (who all politely decline, usually). That is, unless there are children - I don’t want to set an example.
@ sniff; its often a good icebreaker in the pub if there is somebody new in. Some people take up the offer some don’t but its always there if they want to. Stefan
Everywhere unless I am in church…
normally anywhere anytime except when I’m swimming because that can cause Nose Leakage and it looks funny. I don’t normally do it right out in public bbut if I need a pinch I’ll just do it and not make a big deal out of it…
@snort (I’m assuming you’re long gone, but…) I also took snuff at a Primus Concert and was vaping on my ecig and people were watching me the whole time. One guy I was watching out of my periphery kept inching his way over to me (probably thought I was getting high at first) and eventually questioned me about it. I offered. he refused. He seemed interested though. Too bad if he had a problem with it he couldn’t have done anything anyway so… That’s what I love about my habits. TOTALLY LEGAL.
I no longer care about opinions when it comes to public snuff taking. People sometimes give me funny looks but the more indifferent and relaxed I am the less suspicion the reaction. Most people are too self absorbed or busy fingering a cell phone to care anyway. I just try to be discreet about blowing my nose. Otherwise, my policy is “if thy right eye offend thee, cast it out”.
I snuff anywhere using a snuff spoon to put the snuff on the back of my hand and snuffing from there. The only places I get dirty looks are at the Doctors or the Hospital. They seem to think I am corrupting the world but are kind to the 300 pound people that are in their waiting rooms.
@ Nachman that’s a lot of pound people for a doctors office.
@Nachman: Hey, we’ve got the same technique. I also use a snuffspoon to carry the snuff from the box onto the back of my hand.
I use it wherever. Bus, parks, work (when I feel like working lol). The only thing that gets me the stares is the “nose bleed”. Around here almost everyone has had someone in their family snuff. Uncles, grampas, fathers all that. Most of the people I know like to take a pinch when I pull out a tin.
I also snuff just about anywhere, except the doctor’s office (although I do take great pleasure in having a portion of snus in place at all times during doctor visits). I snuff on the job any time I feel the urge, and usually have half a dozen tins and boxes laid out on my desk. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that bookish eccentricity is considered a plus at my firm. I haven’t found anyone who is curious enough to try a pinch yet, but I’m happy to offer. I generally pinch, but when using the back of the hand, I usually use the spoon on my Czech pipe tool to place the snuff on my hand.
My public etiquette: pull out snuff box, pinch, brush crumbs. No big deal. The less weird and tense the snuffer is, the less people actually care. Sneaking around corners and stuff to sneak a pinch would probably raise more eyebrows than just doing it.
Just do it.
+1 on snuffster … “just do it” !!! and +1 on matsnuffs … the less shady one is about their snuffing, the less likely it will draw attention. if folks see you open a tin, pinch and snuff, without looking around all shifty, they will move on about their business … to add to it … in the US, it is not common at all … I would think in the UK it is more of an action that is understood when seen in public. Am i wrong here?
@snuffbrant I agree. In the US you’re more likely to be stopped by an officer and questioned. Not that I’m worried- I just usually don’t have the time to or have better things to do than be harrassed by an ignorant officer trying to bust me for narcotics… I love to disappoint them though…
That’s crazy. Noone will stop you in Germany. You will just earn some strange eyes.
It’s a fact that we don’t go around worried that people are thinking we are taking coke - maybe there is some amount of residual knowledge about snuff, or as a country we just use less insufflated narcotics, but I tend to think it’s more to do with our sense of privacy and, possibly, that we all look like bank clerks.
I do snuff in public. But my general view is that the less the general public know snuff the better, on the basis that every action produces an equal and opposite reaction. People will learn to sneeze from a distance and blame the snuffer on medical, ethical or any other grounds they choose. Some will no doubt assert that God disapproves particularly of snuff. Other that it corrupts the young. Others will set to work to detect second hand snuff clouds which are harmful in some minute degree to bystanders. Therefore keep non-snuffers ignorant. The penalty might end up being death by stoning.
I snuff whenever and wherever I feel like it, just as I have been doing for the last 40 years. Nobody has ever seemed bothered by it.
I generally duck into a bathroom to take a pinch.
